IN - Sylvia, Martin, Gysberts, Maric

Out - Bruce, Newton, Bennell, McDonald (sorry boys & girls but he [censored] me off with his 2 high tackles at crucial moments, and I think 1 cost us a goal)

INS: Sylvia, Garland (if fit), Martin

OUTS: Frawley, Newton, Dunn

Now hear me out.

Frawley had no influence on getting the ball out of defensive 50. Despite the fact that he really didn't cost us anything on the scoreboard, he wasn't nearly attacking enough to hurt the opposition at all.

Newton was also terrible. Again, he had no impact on the game for long periods of time and was the cause of some turnovers inside 50. We need players who are able to keep the ball in there so we can score. Newton didn't do this.

Dunn. Sure, he did some good things and scored a couple of goals, but he was also one of the biggest offenders when it came to turning the ball over in the forward 50. We do too much work on getting it in there to have it all undone by a couple of non-marks or poor kicks.

Scully also played poorly, but he's very much in our future, so I wouldn't drop him yet.

Sylvia in for Bartram IMO. Bennell will watch the replay a few times, and get the message loud and clear. He added a bit of spark up forward, and dropping him will serve no purpose two games into the season. Strauss made a few defensive errors but also did some nice things, and he used the ball beautifully. He will gain confidence from getting games under his belt, and learn from his mistakes. Not sure of the situation with Rivers knee, but is there a spot for him if he's fit?

In: Sylvia

Out: Bate

Also on Bennell, he did embarrass him self with that half effort running back, but i honestly beleive this kid will be a big part of our plans going forward. Some of the run and evasiveness out of the backline and ability to back him self and take on players is great to see from a young player.

For me, Bennell & Newton out, Sylvia, Martin in.

Going forward, I don't think there is room for Jones (or perhaps Moloney - they are similar with Moloney stronger).

I watched the game on tv; was Jones tagged?

Most times he was near it, he made a meal of it.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Rivers. Presumably he'll be right, not even on the injured list.

Not sure about Bate. i supported him being given a chance to play himself into fitness and form, but he just seemed well wide of it today. As people have commented with him, there's such a gulf between his best and his worse.

Bennel and Strauss should be kept in. They're still young and they'll both learn from what went wrong - and what went right.

Juice should be given another chance, I can't imagine the constant in/out helps him.

Finally ... Scully? I just wonder whether a couple of games at Casey mightn't help. He's going to be a gun, but you can see the difference with Trengove who has played senior footy.

Just need Watts and Garland to get some games, plus the likes of Blease and Gysberts, plus Wonna and the other injured players coming back ... could be interesting times at the selection table!

Really looking forward to the year again!

No he isnt.

Bennell got spooked and it cost the team plenty.

Bruce was poor early, cost us a goal but was steady later. But I am no fan of Bruce's.

The two changes I would make are Bennell and Scully. Why Scully? He is very young and we should not run him into the ground. A week back at Casey will take the pressure off a bit. Cam deserves a little slack!

In Whoever plays well for Casey this week.

Out: Bruce

In: Sylvia

* Cam needs a wake up call!

Can't see what game you were watching. Thought Bruce was serviceable.

In: Sylvia, Rivers, Garland* - These 3 must play if fit.

Out: Bennell, Strauss, Bartram*

FB: Frawley Warnock Grimes

HB: MacDonald Rivers Bruce

C: Trengove Moloney Davey

HF: Bail Bate Sylvia

FF: Petterd Green Dunn

Foll: Jamar McDonald McKenzie

Int: Newton, Scully, Jones, Garland

I heard on the radio that Rivers should be right to go. Not sure about Garland. If he's not then Bartram gets a game ahead of Strauss as his defensive work is better. We need that at the moment. I hate to drop Strauss but he will get plenty more chances. Some confidence in the VFL won't hurt him.

Bate gets 1 more chance for mine. Started to get into the match a little in the second half. We still lack marking targets and players who can kick. If Miller dominated/s for Casey I'd probably bring him in instead. Bail and Bennell both played as defensive forwards today, I'd stick with Bail. It's probably not his best position but he did a job for the team today, just couldn't win the game.

Newton can keep the back up ruck/forward job. If Spencer or Martin want to do it they can earn it!

Agree. I'm pretty certain that Frawley played mostly on Medhurst, who had no influence after a matchwilling performance the previous week. Frawley made a few errors but his run was typically excellent.

If Sylvia and Rivers are fit of course they should play. Dropping Bate seems fair. Don't drop bennell, talk tough to him and send him out again. Consider a resting policy for the very young (Strauss, Trengove, Scully).

Were you watching the game?

He coughed it up directly twice, gifting Collingwood easy goals. Another was a handpass aimed directly at Jordie McKenzie's feet, forcing him to take the time to bend over and try and take control of it while we had guys on in the middle. This allowed a Collingwood player to tackle him which then resulted in a turnover and goal.

Bruce is a senior player that has to lead by example. If he dishes up crap like that, he has to be dropped.

And people calling for Scully to be dropped is just ridiculous. He was drafted to play senior football and to lead us well into this decade. What's the point in dropping him? Bailey's already stated that he and Trengove will play as much as possible. Strauss won't be dropped either.

Despite that, he wasn't responsible for much else. To win a game of footy, you have to get the ball within scoring range and the first step in this process is to get the ball out of your opponent's scoring range. That's a defender's job. Out of all the times today that our defenders did that, Frawley was a part of three. But his disposal today actually caused the ball to become turned over resulting in three entries back into our d50. Thus, his net impact in removing the ball from the place in which his opponents were able to score was zero. So under these criteria, that would rank him in the bottom two in our team. But he has been good in the past, so I guess he'll probably come good again next week.

Bennell is not hard at it but it made a huge difference having some leg speed in the forwardline. Sylvia for Bartram (who was not bad but should be nothing more than filler. Hope they persevere with Strauss again next week.

Time to bring in Cheney for bennell.

Sylvia for Dunn.

As weve not a full shopping cart to pick from we might be better to see who inded we need to match up on next week. Depending on how the Crows fare that might decide the fate of a Demon or two.

For what its worth Bruce can play a good close in role defensively but he has to be the worst handballer this club has had. HBA ought to sponsor him !!..He has no sense at all about disposals in a crowd. He should have been dropped many games ago to get that point through. Never quite been the same since "that " game.. But he wont be. Bennel needs a good talking to. Bate's indanger of becoming the new 4-6...thats 4-6 weeks til he brings his A-game. On song hes great.. but its an iffy bet at the moment.

Again will wait to see who the likely opposition is before selecting/deselcting

I think Bate's playing style is highly underrated. He's almost always one of our best at getting the ball into our forward arc and today he did that again (involved in four passages of play in which the ball entered our forward 50). He doesn't make too many costly errors (today, none of his mistakes resulted in opposition scores, although one of them did result in an easy rebound from our forward 50). Nowhere near his best, though, as we know, and he wasn't able to trouble the scorers either, if I recall. Certainly not worth dropping, in my opinion.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
