I'd drop Bate for Sylvia. Bennell was very soft at that Davey pass, but as some have said he was lively up forward. I thought it was a good move from the coaching committee. Bennell has to get better at both his accountability (when in defence) and hardness at the football and man. He's only young, we've got to drill that into him. Whereas Bate has had two shockers really. He needs a run in the twos to get some confidence and workrate up. HIs workrate (particularly last week) wasn't good enough. He had absolutely no impact on todays game and if he had, then perhaps that might have been the difference. If we play like we did today against the Crows next week we'll beat them. If you look at our game against the Crows at the 'G early start year, we really pushed them and we're unlucky to loose. This time, I expect much the same, except hopefully a win! We then have Richmond. Bizarrely, had we won today, we may well have been 3-1 after Round 4.

I'm not comfortable with Bennell out. Surely his leg speed is better than Cheney

Yep, it is, but thats not all there is to things.

Were up against a side next week that is getting its players back in slowly & are big bodied boys who play well.

Cheney played the other night in a scratch match @ Casey & did very well, he's strong a& accountable & used the ball very well, good decisions & execution with the ball.

The other thing is, this team cannot let such obvious poor efforts of team sacrifice, or lack of, go unpunished, or this sort of thing will happen frequently in our sides we put on the park.

This is an opportunity to teach Bennell & the other kids that this stuff won't be tolerated.

We have others waiting for opportunity, if we don't do these things, they may as well not try @ Casey. We need to give encouragement to those not in the 22 if their playing well, promote them when the others stuff up badly.

If that is the case will we see Cam Bruce at Casey. I don't think so. What must it look like to the younger players when an older player is stuffing up but is treated differently?

If Newton is dropped then they wil bring in another big man either Spencer or Martin..

There must be some backup if Jamar gets injured during the game....

INS: Sylvia, Garland (if fit), Martin

OUTS: Frawley, Newton, Dunn

Now hear me out.

Frawley had no influence on getting the ball out of defensive 50. Despite the fact that he really didn't cost us anything on the scoreboard, he wasn't nearly attacking enough to hurt the opposition at all.

Newton was also terrible. Again, he had no impact on the game for long periods of time and was the cause of some turnovers inside 50. We need players who are able to keep the ball in there so we can score. Newton didn't do this.

Dunn. Sure, he did some good things and scored a couple of goals, but he was also one of the biggest offenders when it came to turning the ball over in the forward 50. We do too much work on getting it in there to have it all undone by a couple of non-marks or poor kicks.

Scully also played poorly, but he's very much in our future, so I wouldn't drop him yet.

Lol this is a joke right?

Considering the lead up to todays game & the pressure which was placed on the players to put in a good performance I would try not to make any changes at all. The team did everything asked of them today in terms of contested footy & put in the effort which we all wanted. Sylvia has to come in so I'd probably drop Bate if he's not match fit or Bartram. I'd consider Bartram depending on what his role in the team was today. I wasn't at the ground so I don't know if he tagged anyone out of the game or not?

Although Bennell shirked a contest, he gave us forward pressure which has been lacking & also some run & creativity.

Sylvia IN

Bartram OUT

Strong Debate about ins/outs, havent seen that for a while, usually its a no brainer.

Does Jamar need back up? if so, first choice would be Martin (If Fit) over Spencer or Newton.

Bennells game was better today and needs to stay in.

Out: Newton, Bartram

In: Sylvia, Martin

Lol this is a joke right?

Frawley: 3 involvements in d50 clearances, but was responsible for 3 turnovers that resulted in the ball entering our d50 again. Net impact on scoreline - 0.

Newton: 1 goal 1 behind, but was responsible for 3 turnovers that resulted in the ball leaving our forward 50 arc, one of which resulted in a Collingwood goal. Net impact on score-line: 1 Point.

Dunn: 2 goals 1 behind, and was a part of 3 passages of play in which the ball entered the forward line without score and two in which there was a goal scored. That's actually quite good, but he was also responsible for three turnovers inside our 50 metre arc that resulted in the ball leaving that area, as well as one in the midfield that resulted in the ball entering the d50.

The stats I gave you are 100% true. But if you like forwards who aren't able to hold the ball inside 50 and defenders who don't get the ball out of our defence, then keep these guys in the team. Can you give some statistics that show how these players helped our team in it's attempt to score more than Collingwood? But in retrospect, perhaps I judged Dunn too harshly for his poor disposal.

Just home.

Thats not the sort of stuffing up you drop someone for, if their having a crack. If their not good enough, or consistently stuffing up without doing contributing things, then also, drop them.

Bruce does add to an inexperienced lineup, & is out of form, yes but we can't drop him yet.

Bennell issue was a major discipline issue, not having a go & I would drop him. He also went soft a couple of other times that I noticed.

Dear god.

Great team effort today but I can't believe people haven't mentioned Bruce or

Bate.

If people are going to use the excuse that he isn't match fit, then play him in the

twos. He is not doing anything but making mistakes.

And Bruce. Holy god I can't believe people still rate the guy. Needs to be dropped for

a wake up call.

Bennell is not hard at it but it made a huge difference having some leg speed in the forwardline.

Glad someone noticed. I have been hoping for the whole summer he would be played up forward as he has skill, pace and defensive pressure. Today he gave us 3 goals at least. Yes he dropped a couple of marks and is a bit "nervous" when a hit looks likely but he will improve. His errors are far less costly up forward and he adds a spark up there that we haven't had since Aussie has been out.

Bennell got spooked and it cost the team plenty.

So did Scully's 3 dropped marks and his miss from 20 metres. So did Petterd's dropped mark in the square with seconds to go. So did Jamar's miss from 20 metres, missing everything. So did Green's miss. So did Bruce and Junior's turnovers. So did Nathan Jone's misses. But like Bennell they all contributed.

I like Bennell as a forward as his flair can lead to a goal and he gives definite defensive pressure which was totally missing last week. I recall the great Steven Stretch pulling out of a contest in a Grand Final and yet he was a great Demon. This boy will learn and he will give us plenty.

Couldn't agree more with all of this. Although Scully wasn't too good. Not that I'd drop him after his second game ever though.

I hear ya, but I think the major difference is that the others came down to basic skill errors or poor decision making in a high pressure environment; they didn't get spooked and shirk a contest like Bennell did. Dropping the other guys wouldn't really send any message at all, except "it's never okay to make a mistake", whereas dropping Bennell would send the message that while it's fine to make the odd mistake, it's never okay to squib contests.

I'd give him a reprieve because of his age and because -apart from that one aberration- he was pretty handy today. He wouldn't want to do it again, though.

I'd keep Bate. They're obviously trying to play him into form, and with our chronic shortage of talls I'd keep doing what we're doing and hope he comes good, even if he does it by degrees.

OUT: Bartam

I will be disappointed if Bate isn't dropped. He really annoyed me today and by the end of the game I was dreading when he got the ball. He looked very flat, maybe he is not fit but he shouldn't play next week.

OUT: Bate, Bartram

IN: Sylvia, Rivers

Bennell holds on, just. Bartram would be unlucky but Rivers should come back into the side. I wouldn't mind seeing Newton get another chance as a forward/ruck.

I've never had an 'ignore' list on demonland before but, for whatever it means, anyone who says Frawley wasn't at least very good today is on it

Out: Bate - you just can't serve that up 2 weeks running and stay in the team and I'm a fan.

In: Sylvia.

Personally I thought Bennell was good as a forward. I remember Morton's first game against Hawthorn and that moment of doubt. If Bennell doesn't learn from it then he has a problem. He doesn't strike me as "soft". I'd keep playing him but that's me.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
