Lyon-why I will never coach

This is his statement to end any speculationor talk that he will or would want to replace Bailey.

I'm really glad that Garry has moved to end the unhealthy speculation that he was heir apparent to take over as senior coach at Melbourne. On the other hand, its great to hear him say that he will always be available to help out in other roles, should he be invited to do so.

This is great for all the people who seem to like Potting Garry forbeing linked to Coaching. He never said he wanted to now its definitive.

He remains a legend of the club with integrity!

Lyon was a good player and strong leader for MFC, but may find it hard to up hold expectations of him coaching. If Lyon dosn't have the passion for coaching in the AFL, than it's best that he dosen't coach MFC.

Would be a great story (Lyon's coaching saves MFC!), but best keeped in fantasy...

Good, now everybody get off Dean Bailey's back and let us all support him.

He is doing a very Tough Job, so let us show some unity.

If Lyon does not have the passion he wouldn't be good at the job anyway. He is best mates with our senior people at the club, & always will be.

The Dream is over....

Echo your sentiments fully.Maybe his boys will continue the Lyon name at Demonland

To be honest, I've always felt Garry would be more suited to the role of President.

He does speak well in front of an audience and he's a good leader.

Maybe in the future once Jim stands down and Gaz doesn't have so much on his plate.

Thank heavens for that. I wish he'd done this years ago.

He has stated time and time again, he didnt want to pursue a coaching career. But now its put to bed for ever and we can all move on!

Garry is super smart - way too smart to contemplate coaching an AFL club. He is making MEGA bucks in the media - that's where he will stay. Garry is a close friend of JS so his most productive work for the MFC will be honouring that connection.

A friend of mine asked me today what I thought of Lyon and the coaching role. I said to him he'd make a great President and I wouldn't be surprised if certain people didn't have this in mind already. Jimmy can't do it forever and we need the profile of someone like Lyon to keep this club in the news and in kids minds.

I think being around Eddie and then Brayshaw may have made him hesitant, but eventually I think he'll be in the president's chair one day.

Hmm. I posted something here, I'm sure of it. Was it deleted or am I mistaken?

Anyway. Bravo to Lyon for doing this. I think it does nothing for him and his future. I always thought he was keeping his options open, but by coming out in the media like that, even if he DID want to come into coaching later in his life, he must see now that this kind of article would be dredged up every time the going got tough. He's basically cut off an avenue for himself, and made life for Dean just that little bit easier.

Good on him.

Gaz is just trying to take pressure off Bails, why is Gaz coaching this year if he has no passion for it?

If Bails bails in 2 years,of course Gaz will coach the Dees as we have a much better list than 3-4 years ago when he wasn't interested.

Gaz is a radio commentator and co-hosts a footy show that hardly anyone watches, hardly a great career.

He never achieved anything as a footballer, maybe coaching will bring him the ultimate success,he at least has to have a crack at it or forever achieve nothing in our great game.

I'd say achieving nothing is a little harsh.

Oh by the way, he'll never coach this club. Never, ever. It's not going to happen. he may however become President.

Honestly, that is just a really stupid post.

Firstly, who are you to question garry's integrity. He has said he will not coach, thats it, end of story.

Secondly, if you think his current media committments are as you put it "hardly a great career" then you are seriously misguided. His career in the Media has spanned over 15 years now. Thats a career, and his bank balance and assetts i reckon would suggest it is a good career.

And thirdly and most shockingly is that you as a demon supporter (i hope) can write that he never acheived anything as a footballer is really awful, you should know better, that a 5 time All Australian, 2 time best and Fairest, many time victorian representative and state captain, and coaching the national side just to name a few is actually acheiving alot. Success, if YOU only measure it by winning premierships, then there are alot of great players that have acheived nothing according to you.

Grow up!

Sorry Jack, but I disagree on each of your points. In particular, stating that Garry 'never achieved anything as a footballer' is utter nonsence. 226 games; 426 goals; 7 years as captain of the Dees; regular State representative and 3 times selected as All Australian ...... and all this amounts to achieving nothing? wow!

With total sensitivity and fervent hope that Jimmy recovers his health. I suspect that if Garry is to play any role at the MFC in the future it will be in a similar capacity to his co-host on the footyshow. I hope it's be a long way into the future, and I think Jimmy is doing an awesome job.

Are you for real ?? Or are you just fishing ?? This is one of the most laughable post I've ever read. He has just stated in black & white doesn't want to coach.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
