  1. I figure the value of todays announcement is for the MFC to pitch to the AFL that Jack Viney be allowed to train with the MFC in 2012 and play with Casey in that year as GC and GWS have been able to do with their 17 yr old recruits... We have a year to convince the AFL to allow Jack Viney onto our "Permission to Train list" for 2012. Otherwise he might have to do loads of "work experience" with his old man...
  2. Good summary of the Cam Bruce saga and focus of the MFC . Whatever it takes
  3. I reckon that with GWS looming next year and players like Scully coming out of contract we simply had no capacity in the cap to offer Bruce what he wanted, while simultaneously ensuring we keep our young stars at the MFC. As Benny would say "Such is Life". Good luck Cam. Carn the Demons. Bring on 2011.
  4. Would the FD be looking at what we'll lose between now and 2013 (i.e. Green, Bruce, ...) and looking at where we may have risks (i.e. Morton (hope he has a great 2011)) and how we recruit to cover these losses and possible risks? So while Gawn and Fitz ( and others) are coming on, whats leaving that we still need?
  5. Agree that the trade is for players capable of hitting the ground and filling an immediate need. But would suggest that the FD is using models of the evolution of their list over the next 5 years, projecting anticipated player development (including Gawn and Fitzpatrick) identifying where future needs are and drafting accordingly, to need rather then hoping that "Best Available" delivers them their ideal team. I.e. to Rpfc's point the FD's 3 year needs may not be a tall forward/ruck, but it will be somewhere else in the list for 2013+, still needs based...
  6. I'm not clear on the differences between the trade and draft aside from them being different mechanisms by which the FD can bring new players to the club. If the FD says we need a tall forward in trade period and doesn't land a big forward, do we no longer have that need in the draft period?
  7. Surely the needs of the MFC FD as informed by our current playing list and game plan define what is the "best available".
  8. I think with Melb's courting of Hale we have seen the FD start to be more focused on filling holes in an almost complete line up rather than staying with the best available. Looking at Collingwood last year with Jolly and Ball teams get more specific in their needs as they close in on the top four and flag. I'd suggest like many that we would be looking at our forward line needs with pick 12, and the days of "best available" are behind us or at least more nuanced.
  9. Interesting move given Cameron Schwab's comments about the challenges of re-instating the darker traditional jumper colours due to limitations of our current jumper maker.
  10. Was browsing the MFC video library on youtube and came across this gem So it made me think that we need some sequels for the season just past. Hint Hint!!! And I wanted to know how you can find great clips and pull one of theses together. any advice? A great year. With better ahead. Demon Luv
  11. I think with the need to develop a deeper understanding of the capabilities of a young list and with cuts to be made at the end of the year and several player on the return from injury, the club needed to get Addam on the big ground for a couple of weeks to see if he steps up. Given that any forward down on form and not in the "development" phase of their career is going to get dropped to Casey. Bate was the casualty this week, Miller, Morton have been previously. Bate needs to develop another string to his bow or another level to his game or he may find he is more often on the cusp than he's been accustomed to. Over next year we'd be looking to add Petterd, Tapscott, Fitzpatrick and Gawn to our emerging forward line and places will be a premium. Hope Bate can shake out the cobwebs in Casey and be back soon.
  12. if Morton goes forward (or picks up Goodes) Davie will play back in the sweeping role Jack Grimes usually plays (that Morton can also play)... looking forward to Sunday.
  13. With Bate out You'd expect Jamar or PJ to spend more time in the forward line as a marking target that Jurrah can climb and Maric can crumb to if the midfield delivery has to be rushed (i.e. under intense Swan pressure)... Like it as it also frees Davie to pay more in the middle.
  14. His bump on Alwyn Davie in the Bombers game showed he's capable of inflicting pain when the opportunity presents. Bigger body and engine will allow for more opportunities to do so. and the grief he is getting from defenders means he'll be keen to hurt them when he can...
  15. Two games to come will show how well the team has improved this season, Rd 20 V Hawks and Rd 22 Vs North. Gotta show we are gaining on those teams that flogged us earlier in the year...
  16. 2000 was a great (and tragic) year for the MFC which delivered this pearl and my life's personal footy highlight so far. The goal Yze kicked to put us in front hit me on the chest as we Demons fan went berserk... Brad Green and Cam Bruce feature.Great game. Love the club. What other moments stick from 2000?

  18. Read Bailey interview about remedying slow starts And I think I have the solution. In the warm up for the Brissie game I noticed Moloney in the cue behind McDonald giving his captain a series of hearty whacks to his arse... true. Both players started well... I guess a point I was making is that the performance of competitive sports people is derived from attaining the optimal balance between arousal (intent) and clarity (decision making). Slow starts, playing better against higher ranked teams and worse against lower ranked teams seems to be the result of a young team not knowing how manage their own balance. Instead their balance is derived from events out of their control, i.e. the opposition, the ground, 1st quarters, teammates sparking them, etc... Good players are able to internally generate and find this optimal balance between arousal and clarity, get into the zone and stay in it for longer... I don't know how you train young player to find and maintain this balance but I imagine it is something Bailey and Co are working on. Top level tennis players hone this skill and demonstrate that the ratio of arousal:clarity differs with different personality types i.e Hewitt (high arousal = best tennis) vs Federa (moderate arousal = best tennis). Its an interesting area (arousal:clarity) as the point of niggling a player (i.e. Baker, etc...) is to "over" arouse the player, making it harder for him to think straight. Moloney and Davie (Hall, Judd and Stevie J) struggle when they are targeted in this way. That said, I don't think Baileys mid week musings have any effect on the players hitting the 1st quarter in the "Zone", rather they are pointing to a team that is struggling to believe that they can win and is starting to get demoralised. The signs of this is the encouragement and support for each other dries up as played stop focusing on supporting their team mates and focus on them selves... Bailey's future status as either a genius or a dill will be decided by the extent to which the MFC list can take responsibility for maximising their (and their team mates) time in the zone (optimal arousal:clarity). The Moloney/McDonald example above highlights crudely how the senior group is responsible for this.

I'll be away too for the Saints game so be listening on the radio. 22. Interesting to compare the MFC forward line as listed HF: Jamie Bennell, Matthew Bate, Lynden Dunn F: Neville Jetta, Jack Watts, Aaron Davey with the Casey (reserves) forward line as listed HF: Sylvia Jurrah Morton F: McKenzie Miller Maric Seems that we are churning players hoping a couple will find some form and fluency up front. With us adopting the Small quick model this week in the absence of form from Sylvia (toe?), Morton and Jurrah... and the saints unlikely to be too rough on our kids (post Baker).
  23. Nice summary Bhima and totally agree with your distaste about the uptake of Pokies. Your compassion for those addicted to gambling and their families is to be applauded. And to those who argue that pokies are ok because "they're legal" should be pushing the MFC to open a brothel as well. They are also legal (and no doubt profitable). Anyway... been a good year and great to see the am coming together as a unit...
