I dont understand the NEWTON bashing that continues, people say he has no forward pressure, he is top 5 in forward tackles in the league this year when he has played.

He would make an ideal 2nd marking forward. I think everyone expects him to be the next Johnathon BROWN.

The critisism he recieves by so called supporters is uncalled for.

I know in the past he has lacked 2nd efforts up forward but he has worked on it, and if you weren't so negative towards him you would see this.

Not only will he not be traded or delisted this year but he will play round one next year barring injury.

Please band with me and get behind Newts.

Parma, tackling isn't the be all and end all of forwards. It's nice, but Newton doesn't do anything else properly to warrant selection. He can't kick (neither for goal nor at a team-mate), he still lacks confidence after an extended stint at AFL level, he doesn't present to the right places, he doesn't run hard enough, the list just goes on. He hasn't developed like he should have, he has remained an OK VFL forward who hasn't taken the next step. And we're stuck with him for another year.

If he practices nothing but kicking from now until pre-season starts i will agree with you and get behind him. Otherwise ill have to pass.

probably his biggest let downisnt it.. had he been applying serious scoreboard pressure I suspect many would be signing his praises not lamenting another disappointment. Footy is cruel if you kcik a bit wayward huh !! ;)

If he was an excellent shot for goal i think everyone would look past his flaws.

Must like Anthony for the pies. I dont rate him as a footballer except his kicking for goal is almost flawless. Only needs 2 or 3 marks inside 50 per game and you can almost bank 2 or 3 goals.

Because he can't even manage to make it look like he's trying.

Any time I see him go near the ball, the Benny Hill theme song starts playing in my head.

Ha ha that was funny :)

Footy is a multi million dollar game now Parma.

How Many chances does a very average player get?

I wanted Newton to play well this year, but he didn't & he certainly has had his chances, considering we have been a crap side for 3 years.

Christ if you cannot get a game at melbourne at the moment, you obviously have serious flaws.

I want top line players at the Demons, Not Hapless hacks. We have had enough of that in the last 45 years.

3 more games to go ....

Love a good chicken Parma with Vegs...mmmmmm

The moment he shows that he can play footy at the top level I'll get on board. Not holding my breath though.

I hope not just because he's contracted doesn't mean they can't pay him out. He has to be on bugger all and he wouldn't be the first to be payed out. We are paying the bare minimum of the salary cap so we should have room to move.

It's simple, Parma. Put up a website, add a splash of red and blue and then allow anyone with the inclination to cyber-stalk or 'rate' AFL footballers. Preferably from your own club. Another variation is watch the same jackals rip this home truth apart.

I agree with the opening post... Obviously has flaws in his game, but still has that potential to become a good forward for us... Everyone says how many chances should he get? The guy has played about 20 games? Lynden Dunn just clocked up 50, and he's only just started to show us what he can do, Sylvia closer the 100 mark...

Given the stage of development our list is in, I think we should get plenty of games into Juice, see if he can string some form together when he's settled in the side...

I think the coaching staff see something similar in him, why would they have signed him for 2 seasons last year if they believed otherwise?

Posted (edited)

To put it simply, I just don't think he is up to AFL standard.

More chances or not, IMO he's just not good enough, and his form in the VFL proves this. Nothing more than just a good solid player at that level, so my expectations of what he is capable of at the highest level are very very low.

Will be very happy to be proven wrong, but i'm not going to hold my breath.

In my opinion, he is an excellent VFL player unable to make the transition to AFL. In the long run, Peter German would be happy to keep him at Casey, because he averages 2-4 goals per game.

What other forward options did the footy dept staff have at the time they signed him?

I doubt with a fully fit list next year that Newton will hold his position.

I hope not just because he's contracted doesn't mean they can't pay him out.

Do you understand the implications of paying a player out?? Clearly not.

Unless its a Carroll situation, I cannot see MFC paying any further contracts out.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
