Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I don't pay much mind to Gary nowadays, but he's right. We don't perform on the big stage, which is evidenced by the fact that we have failed in every game that has been billed as a big moment against a top 8 side. A 'mini final' if you will. Sure, the games have been close, but we don't do any of the things we should. I was at the game yesterday, and watching the Swans kick to each other all day in open space, was beyond infuriating. Those aren't 'lessons', or a team on the cusp.

We got on stage, saw the bright lights and froze while a garbage Swans team (that got beaten by the suns) took control, because we let them and they know, as does everyone in the league, that they're always a chance against the Dees.

We're not a big moment club. Yet. As Goody puts it. Let's hope the boys work it out before we have to rebuild (ie we miss our window).

5 to 10 metre kicks used to be play on. not with these maggots

Well, if we win either game in the next two rounds then we will have beaten a top-4 team, and thus be 'deserving' of a finals spot by 'not default'. Coincientally, if we win either of our final two games, we will definitely be in the 8.

So, one way or another, it is not something we have to think about during the finals.

Wow, we're really taking the 'you're only as good as your last game' expression to the limits!

Except if you look 2 posts above yours you'll see I state facts which also contradict Garry's MFCSS.

Nothing is more boring than posters telling others what to do or how to think.

You are being pedantic and the fact is you cant get over Neeld or what happened in the past, but you are right actually, its a bit boring and i dont care what you do or how you think so carry on.

Looking at the glass half full, we have beaten the bottom sides 12 out of 13 times, so we have progressed mentally in that area (in years gone by we would have lost several more of those), no more Docklands or St Kilda curse (for the most part).

Thinking that the club needs some good advice from a sports physiologist, though I was pretty impressed with how we turned it around against the Crows after that close loss to Geelong.

Sooner or later we will crack it against a top side - then watch out because the mighty Demons will be on a rampage and the rest of the comp will fear us!!

Good point. No longer surprised at lots of wins against bottom sides, to the extent we're expecting them (and expecting some to be big). Heightened expectations (which is what made St Kilda loss worse). Had we beaten St Kilda we'd have an incredible record against all teams below us bar Geelong.

MFC more reliable against lower teams. Now for the big games.

Good perspective.

(We'll still miss the finals and I'll be spewing but.)

I listened to Craig Bellamy after the loss by Storm.  Goody could take a few pointers from Bellamy.  Bellamy after all his success still tells the media after a loss that he thinks the hunger was not there.  Goody just fluffs about.  Tell it how it is Goody!! They either want it or they don’t!

It’s 100% psychological now i believe. Which is why i still connect history with our current performances.

A Melbourne Jumper evokes smirks and laughter to the wider community, has done for a long time (school days for me) and it has never really stopped.

Does a new recruit ever feel pity or disdain putting on a Whorethorn jumper for the first time?

It’s all above the shoulders Goody

Gaz is half right but mostly wrong.

He is the master of old school footy clichés about how merely 'wanting it more' is enough to win. If you 'go in hard' then the opposition will just yield to you. It was the type of crude sophistry that managed to get Dean Bailey sacked and Mark Neeld hired.

He is right that we struggle with expectation. However, it comes down to staying cool in the moment, maintaining communication and realizing what is possible versus what is desirable. The amount of times we had two blokes go for the same ball, blew easily convertible chances and tried to pull off the spectacular rather than the practical (Oliver playing on and slipping over on the mark near the end comes to mind) show that it's the inability to calmly assess a situation and to execute that is our downfall.

It's got nothing to do with breathing fire or bleeding red and blue. It was ridiculous for Gaddy to say we were 'going through the motions'. We were cracking in but had our heads up our arzes.

respectfully disagree. that second quarter was a disgrace. The lack of defensive pressure was embarassing and a clear attitude issue. The number of uncontested marks for the swans just highlighted that we were definitely not cracking in and definitely not respecting the occasion.

It's interesting what parts of the game people see @Dr.D

I viewed that 2nd quarter as Sydney realizing that we wanted to play fast, free flowing footy and decided to turn it into a one on one contest. They were never going to keep up with us if that was how the game would go.

The inability of our leaders to communicate and get everyone to take a deep breath was damning. We should have started clogging things up as a group until we got the initiative back.

What stood out to me more than that was our last quarter. Time after time we had chances to put our foot on their throat and we arsed them all up through poor communication or bad decision making (Dan Hanneberry giving the ball away at the centre bounce and is making a pig's breakfast out of the following inside 50, two blokes running into each other when Tracc centred the ball beautifully into the center, Clarry slipping over when playing on).

Add in all the howlers we missed, and you have the answer as to why we lost.

To a certain extent I also see it as both a combination lack of composure, but also bad luck.  In that second quarter turn around the Swans kicked about 5 goals straight from some quite difficult shots.  We had players like Trac hit the post at key times.  Against Geelong, Hawkins had a day out where he barely missed, last weekend he was shanking it all over the place.  When you loose a game by 9 points or less, these things count.

In the period of the game where we had the acendancy against Sydney on the weekend, we made them look pretty ordanary around the ground, it was just that guys like Tommy Mac, Jessy Hogan, Clayton Oliver and Charlie Spargo missed and in some cases shanked some very gettable if not give-me shots.  Had we gone into quarter time 30 points up and not 18, then I think would have significantly effected the rest of the tone of the game.  Say they kick 3 goals 2 instead of 5 straight, then we still go into the third quarter 10 points up after them having had a period of accendancy.

It's a fine line and whilst we are one of the most dominant, if not the most dominant team for some of the fundementals like contested ball, then I feel that it's only a matter of time before we crack winning against good teams and the air of confidence and almost arrogant self beleif of the players will follow and transfer into results.

Not comparing apples with apples here though.  The Storm have been a very successful team over a long period now.  They don't have any beleif issues and thus poor on feild performances can only be as result of lack of effort and with good underlying self beleif appeals to the honor and work rate of the playing group will be effective.

I think for a team trying to establish that beleif just continuing to telling them they are lazy and need to apply more effort to win every time will only sap confidence and beleif - it's Neeld mentality.

I like Goody's messaging it's about the reasurance that if we continue to work hard and learn from the mistakes along the way we will succeed, but all the while raising the bar.

See @Demon3 I disagree with that. Why does anyone have to get over Lyon being involved in the monumental disaster that was the hiring of Neeld?

Not disputing I'd be more zen if I let it go but the reality is Lyon was all care and no responsibility for the Neeld hire and he deserves ongoing criticism.  I don't like that he was able to waltz in, hire a spud, then walk away.

That and I've never forgiven him for chasing Pikey out of the club ?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
