We were very interested in small forward Joe Berry from last year's draft who went to Port Adelaide. Jason Taylor and his team made several trips up the border here to Wangaratta to interview over the course of the year. Maybe worth keeping an eye on over the next few years.8 points

I think it is one of the most pathetic suspensions I have ever seen. One second before impact there would have been contact with Moore's stomach, as they both ran in for a loose ball. Then inexplicably Moore drops to his knees. The Collingwood supporting Tribunal Chairman struck again.8 points

You can not replace Koz but Kynan is at the top of queue to fill the role in my opinion. Has repeat speed, naturally pressures and has good drop of the ball smarts. By all he’s reports having a cracking 2nd preseason which I suggest will be rewarded.7 points

When Maynard gets nothing for ending a career and Kozzie gets 3 for an unlucky bump, the system is stuffed. The BS technicalities applied to get big club’s players off like Cripps, who ended a Lions’ season, are symptomatic of a money above all else based sport.7 points

There are more than 180 players at the various AFL clubs in the running for the 2025 AFL Rising Star Award. This year Melbourne has a relatively low number of players eligible for this year's award - 9 - compared to 13 last year. They are:- Jed Adams Kynan Brown Matthew Jefferson Luker Kentfield Harvey Langford Xavier Lindsay Ricky Mentha Oliver Sestan Will Verrall The 2 L’s - Langford and Lindsay - appear to be our best candidates. Your AFL team’s Rising Star eligible players and the top contenders for 20255 points

I luv Kossy, but the season hasn't even started and already i'm sick of this thread. I know it won't stop, so i'm opting out for my own sanity.5 points

Personally I am not fretting over anything that I cannot control, I’m going to enjoy going to the footy with my family members and surrounding supporters and barrack for the boys like my life depends on it I will enjoy the Demon Army over to my right and hopefully enjoy my 4n20 pie, get a seat in the Rydder Room at 1/2 time and hopefully see us win a final or three in ‘25. I will love Kozzie whilst he is in the Red n Blue and not so much if he’s not.4 points

Most of the outside world have us finishing 15-16 this year. It will be very special if we can get back to finals this year. Hopefully the whole Football Department has set a Standard that will not be compromised.4 points

On that basis, he’s clearly eligible and IMO is a definite chance for the Rising Star in 2025.3 points

I agree with most of his offences, but this one was very different. He did not charge the player, or leave the ground, Moore slid into him and turned a normal contest into a high contact. Kozzy should have gotten a free kick for tunnelling. If he snipes someone, I'll also be blaming him, but he seems to have matured that part of his game.3 points

We have to hope that Ricky and Roy are up to it and Roy gets onto the list. That then would give us the small forward depth, with Kozzie as number 1 of course. I have this feeling about Roy, if he can get on the list and get fully fit and totally committed, he appears to have that special talent.3 points

Would need a few goals (and probably a highlights package worthy run down tackle) in an early game to catch the eyes of the panel. Hope to see it, but pinning more hopes on Harvey Langford building a season worthy of taking out the award.3 points

I'm fine with JVR rucking as long as we have 3 tall forwards. Most likely the same as last year - Petty forward and TMac back. The only alternative is Johnson plays and rucks. JVR and Disco forward, Petty back and TMac at Casey. I don't have Jefferson in the frame at this stage.3 points

Meh ... Sayers is on his way out at the end of the year in any event. I don't have any time for him after the PWC scandal broke which rubbed off on him. He is on the way out the door whether this is a scandal or a hack attack. More upset about Newman being out for the season and quite possibly the end of his career given he will be 33 next year. There is a lot of depth in that position but Newman is an experienced head, has a bit of mongrel in him and is a good distributor of the ball from HB. Having Silvagni and Docherty back for experience and tenacity is good though. This is young Cowan's time to cement himself in his 3rd season.3 points

Agreed. We should go hard at one in the offseason even if Kozzy stays3 points

We lack a small forward with Kozzy, let alone without him. An elite small forward is a desperate list need if not 2 of them if Kozzy departs at any point over the next few years.3 points

Very normal. Gets earlier every year to be honest. Majority of clubs are into match simulations with umpires (umpires need training too😂). Unofficial practice games start in just a bit over 4 weeks so it’s all systems go!3 points

Hurt his foot/ankle. Back running and plan is to rejoin main training in the next 1-2 weeks.3 points

I think the recruiting team have identified the small forward position as a need but just haven’t been in a position to take one in the draft In the past two years we’ve been linked to Nick Watson (we tried to trade up to draft him), Isaac Kako (would have bid on him had Essendon not traded us pick 9) and Joe Berry (I think pick 9 was a few spots too high to draft him, especially with Lindsay still on the board) Personally I think another genuine small forward is our number one priority come trade and draft time3 points

Zerohanger is a bit dodgy for info at the best of times Kolt is on both Sportsbet & TAB odds for the rising star @ $51 so defs eligible Gamble responsibly2 points

18 players on injured reserve is insane. I think if they were healthy especially on D, they would make the SB2 points

Fair call. But he was up against it as soon as Moore went off with concussion, in the current climate. Bad things happen when ever we play Collingwood. Retirements, Injuries, suspensions, bad losses etc…bummed we play them twice again this year.2 points

You’d think the plan is that he’ll be here until at least the end of 2026 and then possibly be traded at that point, at peak value, before he becomes a free agent where we’d only get a singular draft pick via compo.2 points

Hoping to get a good turnout at open training tomorrow at Casey. A great opportunity for little Dees (and not so little Dees) to get autographs/selfies with the boys. There’ll be face-painting, handball comps, a coffee van and the pièce de résistance… the Demon Army *Sausage Sizzle! A snag in bread (with or without onions) is the **breakfast of champions and it won’t cost you an arm a leg. Profits go to the purchase of new props, for example we’re gonna need giant heads for some of those young ‘uns who are qualifying for a giant head a-head of time (see what I did there 😁). So if you’re undecided about attending, please choose to come and get up-close and personal with our awesome players! * Capital ‘S’ in Sausage Sizzle because yes, it’s that special. ** apologies to Mr Vonnegut.2 points

Just watched it. Congratulations to Mike Sheahan! - At least for the first half, getting anything out of Noel was like pulling teeth! (And I don't know any of the history, but obviously he is not Norm Smith's biggest fan).2 points

No where did I say they do. Just because they don’t “grow on trees” doesn’t make it any less of a need…2 points

It's a blow that we drafted for needs in 2019 and 1. Jackson is gone. 2 Kozzie might be out the door. We obtained good compensation for Jackson but he would have made a big difference in 23. The compensation is just starting to get going.2 points

Agree somewhat, but the hawks went for Ginnivan and then picked up Watson (note we would’ve taken Watson at the next pick). We do have to pull the trigger on someone we think can be a 30+ goal kicker as a small forward2 points

Yes early in his career but he's changed his play a lot, so I don't really agree. Latest suspension was an absolute travesty. Moore slid low to take Kozzys legs out. Moore should have copped the suspension. Koz just braced for impact. And yes it will definitely hurt us at the start of the season but it definitely wasn't his fault2 points

As mentioned before you will probably still see Petty forward at training until Turner returns. Petts, the ultimate swingman - even at training.2 points

Campbell is at his 4th club. If he was good enough to be in our starting 22 he wouldn’t be on our list. I think he’s a nice player and excellent addition but I’m realistic about his role.2 points

My friend attended training yesterday and this is what she texted me … “Went to training today and wow just wow- I have never seen them like this! It was full-on. Serious training no holding back. Only me and 2 other spectators. The rehab group were on the back oval- but all were running, moving and kicking really well as far as I could see. The boys are so fit! I can’t wait to see them actually out on the ground.”2 points

The concept is akin to the jewel and its surrounds. Very popular for NFL grounds. Take an industrial site, build a stadium and then sell the surrounding land to investors who then build and lease franchised restaurants and sports bars etc to various operators. If done well you get a new entertainment complex. If done badly you have a group of uninviting windswept fast food joints attracting business maybe ten times per year. It's useful to remember that the original owners of Docklands in Melbourne lost a fortune.2 points

This is what Goodwin had to say about Langford a couple of weeks ago (apologies for the shoutie font size). I am a bit surprised for two reasons One he directly compares Harvey’s power and contest work to when Oliver and Petracca came in. Can you think of any higher praise for a new midfielder? Two. When have you ever heard Goodwin talk so highly of a recruit? Normally it’s is “yes he is meeting his markers but we are taking things slowly”. “We think he will have a bright future if he blah, blah, blah”. None of that here, just genuine excitement. Assuming he remains injury free I think you can mark him down for a round one debut “Harvey's come in and hasn't missed a beat,” coach Simon Goodwin said. “Some of the things he's done at training so far, you just go wow. “He reminds you of some of the power and contest areas that when Clayton first started and Christian, when they first came in2 points

Agree George. And the other thing he seems to have is an elite focus and mindset - attributes that will help ensure he does everything in his power to achieve his potential. No coincidence XL seems to have the same ulra professional mindset as Taylor puts a premium on it. I'd be very surprised if Langford, barring injury, isn't in our round one team - he's the very definition of a plug and play, AFL ready draftee. The exciting thing is unlike some such players (eg wines, Horne- Francis and even Harley Reid) he's still got plenty of scope for improvement, in large part because he'll continue to fill out and get taller over the next 2-3 years.2 points

Great to hear. I’ve got a feeling he will be there round 1… at least I hope. Looks an absolute jet.2 points

I have been to a number of training sessions during the off season, and the one player who impresses me is Langford. Normally you cannot expect much of a first year player, they don’t have the body, are overwhelmed by where they are, and take a good amount of time to “learn the ropes”. Not with this kid He has the body, and is already mixing it with the mids. He knows what to do to get the ball, and most importantly knows what he is going to do with it, and where it is going, before he gets possession. He has similar vision to Oliver. He may not be given a shot early on, but it won’t be long until he is mixing it with the best.2 points
