  1. I don't usually comment on these threads but in my view he is 100% not getting sacked and nor should he be. We have had a lot of obstacles to overcome this season, starting with the Smith and Oliver dramas in the off season; long, medium and short term injuries to Lever, May, Petracca and Gawn in season as well the career ending injury to Brayshaw only weeks before the season started. The worst season Viney has played in his career and for much of the season playing a large number of players under 50 games every game. The season has been disappointing and our list management has been questionable in recent times but I think (and more importantly people who can actually influence the decision believe) that Goodwin is the person best placed to guide us over the next chapter. There is a lot of natural improvement in our younger players. We have seen that with Rivers and McVee this year. I have confidence we'll see similar with some of our youngsters next year. Gawn once again proved last night that he has no peer as a ruckman and will play for another couple of years. He needs some support. We need to reinvigorate the midfield which is why we need to go to this years draft. We'll have a pick between 5 and 10 most likely and there is plenty of good talent from a midfield perspective. My footy watching experience tells me these things can flip around quite quickly. Maintain the faith.

  4. I rarely post, and I don’t mean to pick on one line, but I need to call this out. I appreciate its emotional after a bad loss, but threats of withholding membership, conditional to x or y, is not what the Melbourne Football Club is about (although we’re accused weekly of being a fickle supporter base, and worse). The club is bigger than any one season, coach, player, president, captain, x or y. We barely survived after norm smith and I got to see 2021 because of that survival. I hope to bring my kids and grandkids to the footy and see a live premiership. The only thing most supporters can do to contribute is sign up. Sign their kids up, sign their partner up, sign their dog up. And paint their fence red and blue the next time we make a grand final. Don’t let a set back today ruin that future.

  8. Yeah well .... The only teammate who tried to respond was Viney. Trac and May practically gave Maynard a cuddle after the return loss. And don't get me started about the non-response when they mugged Langdon.

  10. Wow, Sack Goodwin, the players are [censored], etc etc. Gawn and Goodwin will not blame personnel, but we had May injured or coming back from injury, Brayshaw retired, Petracca injured, and even thought he is massively underrated on here, Spargo, throw in Salem's Season, Gawn's leg. So basically all lines thrown into disarray, with replacement players not quite ready to step up. I was as disappointed as anybody last night watching it live, but the confidence is shot as well, we had young players trying their best against battle hardened players. We get another go next year, threatening not to renew your membership says more about that poster than the team. Try going into the Club a few years ago the day after losing to Essendon by 146 points and ringing members asking them if they want to renew, that gives you resilience. It is footy, nobody dies, I will continue to support my team.

  13. You do realise that Sydney not only have had the COLA salary cap bonuses, they've got academy accesses that has enabled them to grab pretty much all their elite players (captain Mills, Heeney, Gulden and Blakey are all academy). Like imagine if we'd just needed a bunch of junk picks to pick up those 4. Comparing the QLD and NSW list management builds to any other club is ridiculous and not comparing apples with apples. As for Geelong and Collingwood, they've had at least 2 champions each in the 21st century that were father sons. That's luck. Not real list management. Compare that with us. We've had one in Viney.

  14. Those calling for Goody to be sacked have absolutely no idea about modern football. It is because of Goodwin that Kosi resisted the urge to go home. Likewise Petty. The role of a senior coach first and foremost is to be a people manager. Nobody does that better than Goodwin. I would seriously look at both our conditioning team and our assistants. The bottom line is that we won a flag with Goody at the helm. The big changes made since 2021 off field have been the loss of Burgess and Yze.

  15. I love Gus, but I'm so tired of hearing this. It gives the group and the club an out for various, systematic miscalculations. He was a gun, and a heart and soul player, but he was our fourth choice inside mid. A valuable rotation, and a super versatile player, but let's not indulge the fantasy that he would have changed much on his own. Had an elite season off the HBF in 22, and a great one on the wing in 21, but would he have moved the needle a huge amount this season?

  16. Richmond lost Rance to an ACL injury round 2 2019. They went on to win a premiership that year. They had no one to cover the calibre of his talent and especially as he was their spiritual leader but they had the soliders and system in place to cover him. We're making excuses for the sake of it. Had we won the those close game in Carlton, Brisbane and GWS this whole Brayshaw discussion wouldn't even be brought up. We'd be sitting at 13 wins ready to attack finals.

  18. The Suns choking, as per usual, means we won't get their higher pick... Onto the game: Absolutely flat across the board. The team went in with no confidence or desire and it showed. I like mixing it up, but the season is on the line and we had Woey, Tholstrup and Bowey in at various centre bounces early on. Some good acrobatics from Fritsch Oliver: I'm struggling to stay on board. Love him for all he's done but he's one of our key senior players and there were three absolutely awful efforts in the first 5 minutes of the game that set the tone. He's being paid $1m a year and is being scaled UP with the CBA increasing. We have about three meaningful injuries, this is close to our best 22. Grim. May's back will eventually be the end of him. Just hope he can nurse it through two more seasons. TMac - THUD back down to earth... Two stinkers. Such a good season but age is showing now. Was embarrassed by a stronger man last week and a younger, more atheltic one this time. Flew at everything up forward like a man who knew he wasn't being swung forward to help us win, but was moved out of the way because he was a liability down back. He can have a one year deal on minimum coin, but the club would be derelict to offer him more. If another club offers him two, let him go. Melky - struggling to make an impact now. Needs a pre-season but we'll see at his age. JVR had about a month up forward where he looked untouchable. Then two weeks in the ruck. Now he can't get near it up forward again, as per the start of the season. Give the kid some [censored] consistency. Jefferson kicked 4 and surely gets a go next week. Petty back and TMac dropped would be my preference. And the big one - 'the kids'. I'm glad we're playing them, I like the idea that we're being bold, but let's cast a critical eye over the spread of talent. Windsor, McVee, Rivers, Pickett & JVR are the only under 23s worth singing about right now. If they're tier 1 talent, the rest are either first year kids or tier 3 on exposed form. They all have a long way to go. I imagine he'll be fine long term, and I may get flamed for this (I love his attitude as much as everyone else), but I am struggling to see what Kolt's main strength is aside from his hunger at the ball. A long way to go, and I'll back him in, but it hasn't been the most convincing start to his career. We're a [censored] team, but not [censored] enough that he has to shoulder any load. Taj isn't improving (being sub 10 weeks in a row didn't help), Andy shows a bit but isn't as quick as advertised, Disco was ok in defence while the ball was raining in. Bowey is a battler, unfortunately. Was carried by the star-studded defence. Howes hasn't been the same since he was dropped. Goodwin deserves blame for this. The commentators' only salient point of the evening was that Geelong and Sydney are so good at rebuilding on the go because they run 2 or 3 decent kids through their team when they're good and help build them up. We didn't take those risks, beyond the absolute best 22 ones, and here we are.

  21. Mids mids and more mids should be the key focus for this year's draft. We've got Kalani White and Tairon Ah-Mu in next year's draft who are both key position players which will help with our developing forwards and backs tall stocks.

  22. He absolutely should not get sacked. And he won't. I think the Assistant coaching group needs a big shakeup though, out Stafford and McQualter at minimum. We need a tactical/ball movement coach. Goodwin is a fantastic people manager, the players clearly love him. He is a very good strategic coach but if things don't go well his tactics can come up short and he is slow to react. I thought it interesting he switched Petty/TMac last night when it should've first been tried at halftime vs Brisbane in round 5. I think we definitely need some fresh voices/ideas and I'd be looking at our fitness coaches and list manager too, JT has been fantastic at drafting but our trading has been poor for several years now. But throwing the baby out with the bathwater and sacking Goodwin would be idiotic. The same people are probably calling for Pert/Roffey's heads too, just really dumb - this kind of instability would send our club back a decade.

  29. It's so hard to tell to be honest mate. From everything I have read and certainly speaking to development officers from more the metro areas, Tairon Ah-Mu could every bit be a a top 20 prospect especially with what he's done so far at Coates League level but also school footy as well. For an under-age prospect he's dominated both levels which is an impressive feat in itself. He's a tall forward prospect who can pinch hit in the ruck. In one of the school footy games he played this year he played more ruck and yet still found a way to kick 4 goals and completely dominate on the day. We do need to temper expectations though. We've seen so many times with kids that are physically bigger then most kids at junior level struggle at AFL level. I think of James Sellar for instance and I'm sure there are many more players similar. Kalani White I'm not too sure to be honest. I know he dominated all his junior footy back in QLD and I watched his under 15's game when they played at Lavington here for QLD and he was playing as a ruck who rested up forward. He was obviously raw but he had the athletic traits like the old man. He's been playing down back but I preferred him as a ruckman/forward who's similar to Sam Darcy with his marking and athletic ability.

  30. They were going to sack Thompson years before after a bad year but decided not to and he went on to coach them to 2 premierships. Same with Hardwick. Richmond had a couple of bad years and they were going to sack him but did not. He did pretty well. Clarkson's performance in the early years was heavily questioned by the club, and they were also on the verge of making a change but did not. He did pretty well himself after that as well. There are many more examples. With your logic, you would have sacked Chris Scott after Geelong failed to make the eight after their premiership year, and it looks like you would be dropping the hammer on Craig McRae shortly. So what does that all say? We can go down the path of a St. Kilda or Essendon and change coaches every 5 minutes, panic, throw out everything that has been set up, and start again because we have had a bad year, or stick with the process that has been maturing and successful since 2019. There will be reviews and changes post-season. More than likely, there will be changes in the support coaching personnel and possibly in the football department as well. But don't expect a review that will have a scorched-earth outcome. Successful clubs don't do that.

  31. Good post, sorry to cherry pick this bit (in answer to your broader question, personnel is a huge point - the list is just too bare of midfielders and the good ones are injured). But this is an important point IMO. It’s become a bit of a Demonland myth that if the oppo doesn’t score heaps from stoppage, that means the midfield wasn’t that bad. Part of the reason we concede heaps from turnover is because we are turning it over under the pressure of repeat entries into our D50, and that is coming off the back of being beaten at stoppage. The midfield has been our biggest issue all year and it’s showing now more than ever.

  32. I'd honestly hate to play for Goodwin. These kids that make it to the bigtime do it because they played with some flair. Then they get here and it's coached out've them. Our KPI is to keep the opposition under 60pts and somehow hope we manage to rugby scrum 61pts. Inspiring stuff .... Not.

  33. Tom controlled Hogan for the best part of 3/4's before a couple of good efforts by Jesse after a flood of supply. Had a shocker tonight but also got some of the roughest umpiring you'll ever see. Honestly, a few dropped marks paid and laughable frees against. He'll finish very highly in the B+F. If he's keen to play on someone will nab him. If we move him on it will only be because we've found another option and we want to stagger the McDonald/May coming off the list. Why would he be dropped for Tomlinson who would've given up just as many if not more contests tonight given the flood of supply.

  34. After an intense and draining style of footy over the 3 years preceding the players are physically wrecked and looked emotionally worn. If the team kicked straight last year every chance Goody is a 2 time flag coach. The lack of loyalty and trust in Goodwin is a bit galling. Max, Oliver, Viney, Petty all look 25% fit and no Trac and Salem. Brayshaw is a bigger loss than most of us probably thought. Thats the issue. Goodwin is a good coach, a premiership coach and more than deserves the opportunity to pivot and reset. List management is the issue. We have brought second hand duds in and somehow having Schace, Tomlinson, Fullerton and BBrown is a major liability. Thats the angle I would be looking at.

  36. I'm way more interested in looking into our fitness staff... Goody is just tactically playing with whats possible with the lack of fitness across the list. We can't effectively cover the ground at the moment. If you want quick slick ball movement with run and handball like the dogs did tonight, you need a fit side with better conditioning. We were cooked... Notice how none of our players are able to gain any separation from opponents at the moment? Especially our midfield. They're doing their best but just not fit enough for run and carry with quick chain ball movement. Its not pretty but all we can manage at the moment is getting the ball forward with quick long kicks to get out of congestion to try to gain territory and win contest in the forward half. These tactics worked ok against Essendon and GWS in wetter conditions but on the dry quick surface of Marvel and Optus we were greatly exposed but fitter sides that could run and spread. Goodwin should be asked questions as he plays a part in planning out training and recovery. But would really love some please explains from our fitness/strength and conditioning team. Did we get our preparation wrong? Did the brutal schedule to start the season have an impact on how we've run out the rest of the season. Its like 2022 again but worse....

  37. Err Trac says hello. Lever missed 5 weeks. May had broken ribs. Spargo, and Bowey missed a heap of weeks. Salem also. Clarry missed a preseason and has played with a broken hand. Petty also had no preseason. Turner missed weeks. Oh, and also Smith for the year, and now Windsor. Besides these, what else have the Romans done for us.

  38. Since round 8: 4 wins, 8 losses, percentage of 84.76% - only the bottom 3 teams have performed worse over that period. With one star player and one other best 22 player on the injury list. Simply embarrassing from players and coaches alike.

  39. Viney looks really sore, will probably require surgery on his shoulder Oliver has 14 pins in his hand, will require surgery Gawn has his ankle/leg issue May has his back/ribs issue Get them all in for surgery/recovery early so that they are fit for the majority of the preseason. And give the AFL minutes to guys in the VFL to see what they have (Laurie, Jefferson, Fullarton, K Brown)

  41. Mitchell is a good coach but now that people are noticing Hawthorn, they will get figured out very quickly. Longmire is a great coach - but let's see how Sydney goes now that they have a few injuries. I suspect they will provide clear proof of why we went out in straight sets last year: injuries will kill any club. In fact, to loss the two finals by less than a goal each, one to the eventual premier, was actually a real feather in Goody's cap. Fagan has an unbelievable list, a huge home ground advantage, and still hasn't won a premiership. Longmuir has a great great midfield but is still unproven. Bevo also has a great list which is doing well now, but let's wait and see. We have been two players down from our first 22 since before the season started. That not only is a big loss, but it limits our depth, and our capacity to manage players. Clarry is still at 50% at best. We have now lost our best player for the remainder of the season. The fact that we got within a goal of Brisbane up there, and two points from flag fancy GWS, is another tribute to how Goody gets the absolute best out of what he has. As for tactics: he changed the way the whole league plays with his whole-team defence and his use of wingers and high half-forwards. Last year there was a huge chorus of people saying out success was all due to Yze. Sure, he was handed a disaster, but has he really shown that he was the brains behind our success? Lose Goody at our peril.

The delivery has been generally deplorable at Casey this year which hasnt helped. Id like to see how he goes with a pre season under his belt and him growing a bit more into his body.
