Doctor “Ok” P.F Ok Doctor but first I gotta get this training report outa the way! TRAINING MONDAY 30/1/2023 NO SHOWS JACK VINEY, MATT JEFFERSON, CHRISTIAN SALEM. Also did not see ADAM TOMLINSON INJURIES MODIFIED DUTIES MAX, JOEL SMITH, ANB, AMW,( NO 47 Not sure who ) and during training CLARRY ( More on this latter) SKILLS , DRILLS AND MANOUVERS After warm ups and Run Throughs, players broke of into 3 Groups doing a variety of Close in Handball through traffic to hit clean target with players pressuring. One on one groundhog day ground ball gets Telescopic Talls in Marking contest situations Pressure the ball carrier, two meters away closing fast to kick to a lead Dodge through stick men and kick for goal ( Forwards only) Greg Stafford masterclass for Rucks but specific emphasis on newbies Will Verrall and Kyah Farris-White ( Gee what a huge unit he is) Half ground transitioning including stoppage work on both boundary side wings and emphasizing manned positioning and quick breakaways using precise handballs to break out of traffic and finding leading player on lead or further handball, chip kicks to favored positions to free up play and present scoring options closer to goal. Highlight is always the full ground Match Simulations and today Two Official Umpires were in charge of proceedings adding to the Life like and professional dimensions of this aspect. PLAYER WATCH Firstly, a downside. CLARRY Is clearly still hampered by his hand/thumb injury to the extent that after one drill he went to the medico’s on the boundary and disappeared to get treatment strapping and was then on modified duties running light ball work drills but he did not play in match sims. FWIW I would be totally keeping him away from all ball work for a week or two to avoid any further damage. He is far too an important player at this point of time, but the Medicos must know what they are doing! GRUNDY put on a masterclass in ruck after being pitted against Josh Schache and Will Verell. What he also provides is run and carry, he uses handball well and is pretty good below his knees. The other standouts for me were - JAKE BOWEY, who was pitted against Kyle Chandler. He mopped up at will and was instrumental in launching attacks time and again with that precisity of kicks for which he has become adept at delivering. BAILEY LAURIE was involved in a couple of excellent passages of play and perhaps he may still be in calculations for game time this year. He was creative, smooth with maneuvering and fired creative handballs to advantage. BAYLEY FRITSCH was opposed to Pig and toweled him up kicking the Blues 3 out of 6 goals . He looks more or less on song for another standout season. PIG was good with a few good marks and line breaking run but overall Bailey got the chocolates. LACHIE HUNTER is my pick for a most important role this year. He just continuously bobs up in dangerous positions and gets plenty of the ball and sets up forwards with precise kicking and canny running. He was on TAJ WOEWODIN for a time and he got a bit of the ball as well but was no where near as damaging. TOM SPARROW Impressed me greatly today with style and flair, he looks like “He Belongs” and is gaining confidence in all aspects, a dasher with speed, he posses flair and takes the game on, His kicking to position has also improved. Although WILL VERRALL was beaten in the ruck, he showed on a couple of occasions a turn of speed when he got it and the flair which he played reminded me a bit of David Schwartz with those flashy run bys. BLAKE HOWES did a few nice things and seems to be gaining confidence, as did DEAKYN SMITH off half back and thereabouts who intercepted well on a couple of occasions and delivered to a target. I thought JAMES HARMES was very very good today in match sims and set up play after play as we know he can and does do. JOSH SCHACHE ATTACKEY took a brilliant pack mark and goaled from 40 and was busy and will no doubt come into calculations, particularly if Max is not right (incidentally, Max completed many running drills almost at 3 /4 pace and I would say he will be right back to full training next week) LUKE DUNSTAN gets his fair share of the ball, isn’t dynamic or damaging with it but is always reliable and dependable. TRACC was Trac and KOZZY was Kozzy and he looks like he will be given more midfield time this season. Same with MAYSIE and PETTY. That about wraps it up for me and I can see the Doctor and Leela coming my way Till next time cheers to all Demonlanders P.F38 points

Just thinking out loud. Wouldn't it be great if this thread was closed down until Kozzy signs on with us. Don't think I could stand another Jacko thread.9 points

Except that if he wants to get away from Melbourne ( the city...not the club) and if wants to be in SA then its only two clubs isn't it. Then, if he's made up his mind on one of them, then its the Jackson scenario repeated. Losing Kozzy would be an even more bitter pill to swallow imo. Hard to know if theres any strategy we can employ in this circumstance.6 points

Genuine question. What better plan do you think the Club could have had for Jackson. Obviously it was a dud trade but what better trade do you think could have been achieved. They didn't have any better picks to offer. Similarly Port don't have a first rounder in this draft. They'll have to give up something serious to get a first rounder this year. Next year's first rounder won't do it. I hope. Surely they'd have to lose a player or players to make it happen this trade period. I'm sure the Club has tried very hard to avoid another Jackson circus so you'd have to think that's been a fail and the writing is on the wall.6 points

Love it @picket fence, Tom Baker still my favourite Doctor, so this one’s right up there among my fav pre-season reports of all!5 points

Agree that Clarry should not go anywhere near a football for at least a fortnight. Just keep him clocking up the miles in the legs for fitness. we need him cherry ripe for the start of the season, he doesn’t need any more improvement with his footballing ability that’s for sure5 points

2 days before the deadline..and Feb still hasn't committed. Jan and March may just have to play larger roles if it leaves.5 points

Wandered around aimlessly till saw a gate open then took my chance and snuck in. Then as I was getting ready to leave a council worker was going to lock the gate meaning I would have been locked in and preyed on by Vipers through the night. Just managed escape route via same council employee🤩4 points

Better to be coming from a long way back fitness wise than ability wise. Looks a natural footballer.4 points

Pickett may leave or he may not. If we win the Premiership this year at the G he can play for Collingwood in 24 for all I’ll care!4 points

How about these aspirational names (aspirational in the sense that Jackson has no impact whatsoever for Freo): Inaction Jackson Not in action Jackson4 points

Yep wonder when interest moves to concern and then to worry. From there it's despair before angry acceptance. From a trade aspect I have no idea what the correct tactics are but I hope we have a better plan than we did for Jackson. Have great sympathy for our list/salary cap management staff. The general rule is that players are well paid until say 25 years of age at which time they get the big deal. We were unlucky that Jackson got the mega deal offer at 21. Looking like Kozzie will get a similar offer. A perfect storm when for the first time in decades we have 5 plus very good/elite players in the over 25 brigade4 points

If Koz is going to play a greater role in midfield, there is no way he signs before season kicks off. If he signs now and has a blazing start to the season, he’d be leaving a heap of cash on the table. Would love for him to sign, but I think he’ll hold off until he’s had a chunk of the season behind him to help add to his case.3 points

He most certainly did. One of the most dominant match winning performances I've seen from an MFC player. Was the clear difference in a win or a loss.3 points

IMO if he wanted to stay he would have signed by now. Time will tell. Hopefully he has a good season and keeps his trade value up so that we can hopefully get a good deal for him. It’s annoying as I thought our good players would want to stay (I know some have already extended) given the position we are in now.2 points

Similar to what Binman said about LJ, is Pickett what Port need? Obviously he’s a class player and every club would love to have him on their list but at what cost. Have they got bigger needs? Having said that we still don’t know how good he will get.2 points

As I said in my post I have no idea but it's clear that the Jackson strategy failed. They've had a year to think up a better one. At the start of the Jackson saga most said Freo didn't have the "trade resources" but turned out they did. The problem is that if you offer a player mega dollars no other club than the offering club is likely to compete. That leaves you with the choice of taking what is offered or forcing the player into the PSD. One strategy is to get other clubs interested in the player. If needed offer to pay part of the salary for a few years. Assuming you can attract interest from elsewhere and thus scaring off the "attacking club" the player is more likely to stay. Not perfect by any means but it's a strategy.2 points

WJ is in hospital with knee problems, so best wishes Jack from all of us on your favourite DL thread, for a speedy recovery.2 points

Jackson was garbage against Freo last year averaging all of 1 mark in both games for someone that’s probably taller than 85-90% of the league. If Kozzie has a stinker against Port in round 10, I’m panicking.2 points

I'm starting to feel all this "if he hasn't signed by Rd 2 then ..." talk is a bit of emotional scaring from Dogga 2022. Let's just settle down and see what transpires. Wouldn't surprise me if Kossie holds out for half a season and then signs on for another couple of years and backs himself to pitch for the mega dollars, long term contract when he's right in his prime like Trac, Clarry etc. He'd be worth good money now, but he could be worth more in a few years. That in itself wouldn't nessacerilly me a part of him does or doesn't want to get to Port/SA, just that he management are playing a long game. If he's thay desperate to go home, I don't think he would have played out the season and a deal would have been done. I'm not convinced we're anywhere near desperation point on anyone's side.2 points
