  3. An interesting view on WCE sliding down the draft from #2. The Age podcast indicated they see some of the players at the top of the draft as 'flight risks' so will look to local players. Given recent trends with elite players 'going home' very early in their careers and the drafting club being short changed in most cases, that is smart thinking for the top end of the draft. The view of 'backing in your system and development' doesn't seem so compelling these days.

  12. We're getting screwed here. If pick 13 (which in reality will be closer to 15 or 16 after bids) is the best we get for a 20 year proven pick 3, then we've lost out big time. Anything less than a top 5 pick is a loss. Anything outside top 10 pick is a disaster IMO. Points are irrelevant and two lower picks don't equal a higher pick. We're losing elite talent, we need to replace it with elite talent. Blah blah back your recruiters etc. We shouldn't have to. We should get our pick of anyone in the draft, not watered down less talented left overs. What happened to getting at least one top 10 pick that Tim Lamb publicly spouted the other day? Looks like we bent over unfortunately.

  13. It's all posturing chest beating rubbish. Come end of trade period, most of the deals will likely get done with fair compensation. I blame the footy media and the AFLs thirst for year round coverage. The fact trade WEEK is longer than a week for a start is stupid. The AFL just wants to get as much media courage as possible, and so everyone who cares is subjected to days upon days of braindead blokes making stuff up and destroying any semblance of respect they once held with the public. Listening to someone like Adam Cooney or Kane Cornes make up hypotheticals and start rumors is the equivalent to papercuts to your scrotum while having your head bashed with a mallet. The trade period should be 1-2 days and clubs should be forced to deal quickly and decisively without all the pissfarting around shuffling late inconsequential picks to try and save face. The point system and rules in place have made trades become too complex. It should be as a simple as Luke Jackson for pick 2. Instead we get Luke Jackson for part of split pick 2, plus a second round, plus a future first round, with a second round coming back... after 1.5 weeks of madness after they've had 12 months to prepare. It's pathetic and takes. a lot of shine away from an otherwise great game. Anyway rant over :P

  14. This is really becoming an sideshow and one that we are not going to get a great prize in. Time we all got our heads around, pick 13 and future First. There is no other way that this can happen. He isnt going to the Eagles. We are about to be shafted.

  16. I would definitely include Taj in this list showed a bit in the Granny and has pace and stamina and looks a chip off the old block.! Howes also looks the goods, 6’3” has pace and skill just needs to build the tank and resilience for AFL and Disco at 6’4” is ready to go add in JVR also 6’4” and with another pre-season should hold down the second tall for us. There are boys and will need a couple of years as role players before they really blossom. Me I am expecting big improvements from Kozzie, Sparrow, Jordon, Petty, Rivers, Salem and Lever. Not sure about the other boys but you should never put limitations on young players, some will surprise you and some will frustrate and disappoint you.

  21. yes, and i expect jackson is personally not playing much of a role in the current negotiations. it would all be his manager. all this, jackson should say this, should do that etc is rubbish. he's just a kid and being managed by others. all he wants to do now is get to freo and everything else around that is someone's else's problem as far as he's concerned

  22. especially given what they've done to convince him to leave, inviting his family into the club, promising they'd get a deal done, offering him huge money and now they're risking breaking that promise for the sake of saving some token draft picks, and getting a better deal.

  23. They wanted 30 + 39 back - it was a total rip off. Then they traded the 1st away! Brisbane far worse than Freo.

  26. They've done zip to improve their trade hand for Jackson. And it looks like they never intended to. Now are holding back on the Lobb and Meeks trades so they don't have more to add to their offer.

  27. Yes, the same Josh Bruce who was coming off a knee reco and came back too early. He may end up being a direct VFL replacement for M Brown or he could have a massive bounce back year after a strong pre season. I’m keeping open minded and we need to address our forward line.

  29. I have it on good authority that on top of the medical he was asked to answer a multiple choice question. I'm pleased to inform D'landers that my sauce (whose identity i am unfortunately not at liberty to reveal) gave me exclusive access to the question asked which i present for your reading pleasure below... ...."You are playing a KF role starting deep in the goal square. However, Big Maxy has decided to push forward and drop into the hole at the top of the square. You recognise the situation (ie; too many talls/opponents). You are also under instruction to make space for Max to be able to either make a short lead or if he has a mis-match, for him to stay home in the square for a relatively easy contested 1 v 1 mark from a dumped bomb out of the middle. Do you"... A) Lead hard to the left pocket/flank (along with 1 or 2 others, including Max!) knowing you have about a 1 in 5 chance of converting should you out mark a pack of 5 to 7 players? B) Lead straight up the guts drawing your opponent to about 30 meters, feign as if doubling back but instead push off your opponent putting in a hard but short lead for a hit up option knowing you have a very high likelihood of converting from about 45 out either directly in front or on a slight angle? C) Lead hard to the right pocket/flank (along with 1 or 2 others, including Max!) knowing you have about a 1 in 5 chance of converting should you out mark a pack of 5 to 7 players? Apparently he chose the only correct options (A & C) and they are finalising the trade papers as we speak.

  33. Are you suggesting all of those farms, properties and businesses obtained by Cats players are outside the salary cap? Surely not. People just love Geelong.

  34. This Bowes trade really annoys me. This one isn't just a case of a local boy wanting to go home and taking unders to go to a media darling 'well run club'. This is a player that comes with a salary dump and is going to the one club that should not be able to afford it given its recent big signings and other players being brought in this year. Something stinks and eventually someone will talk. There is no way in my mind they are not cheating the salary cap and I've thought this for a number of years, but if they of all clubs can absorb the salary dump then something is rotten in Denmark!! How there is not more media questioning and scrutiny is beyond me.

  35. If we're going on amount of games, then Tomlinson is a better back than Petty is a forward. For mine, Tommo isn't and wouldn't have to be as good as Petty in the backline, we have May, Lever, Salem, Bowey, Hibberd, Rivers etc all around him so he just has to play the role well enough and those guys can provide the top quality. Aside from the reach he has, I think Petty going forward gives us better pressure and intensity inside 50 as well, and that will actually help the backline. All that adds up to absolutely worth trying in my book.

  36. Agree. As unfair as it seems Freo just have to outbid WC who aren't bidding. There's no way I'd let LJ go to the PSD to prove a point and leave 2 1sts on the table. We may get a late sweetener but It won't be North's F2nd.

  38. WC probably right to hold off on any offer. MFC can eventually call Luke and tell him that Freo aren’t offering his value and he needs to visit WC to at least look around. No player wants to be undervalued by their club. He goes in, WC take their best shot with their facilities and whatever players impress - tell him they’re offering pick 2. Luke can still hang out with the Freo guys, go surfing, whatever, but the club that’s showing him proper respect is WC. That’s how I’d play it anyway

  39. It isn't just the PSD the AFL needs to look at. It seems that 'good faith negotiating' has gone out the window right across the board. The new mo seems to be: entice players to their club, make unrealistic offers dig heels in stalemate It is not so bad when one or two clubs played that way but now it is nearly every club. Even the typical 'honest brokers' like Geelong are making ridiculously low offers; Mackie trying to big note himself in his first year whereas Wells would get deals done. Its like clubs have been to Dodoro's school of trading techniques! The bizarre thing is that apparntly after the top 5 players in the draft it is pretty even, so what is everyone fighting for, other than ego! As an aside does Ess still exist. Very quiet on the trading front. All too busy with the politics and looking after their own patch I guess!

  40. Not sure if you're actually legit or not, but this is honestly the most bizarre thing I've read on this page. In a big professional sporting organisation and you actually think this kind of weird wacked out scenario would actually exist? Todd Viney works for, and is fully entrenched with the North Melbourne Football club and absolutely owes no favour whatsoever.

  42. Geelong. Very hard to deal with this trade period. Trying to get henry and bruh while refusing to part with 7 or 18.

  43. He was a pick 3 originally. We live in an odd world where quality players in the system for 30-50 games of development are worth less than they were 3 years ago even thought they’ve still got 10-12 years of footy to play. Something needs to change as it’s not at all reflecting the equalisation processes of the AFL.
    5 points
  44. Yeah I don't. It's all for show I reckon. If he really was happy to go to west coast we would have offers from them by now. Instead all we have is the WC list manager more or less saying they're still trying (and failing) to convince LJ to join them, hence why no offer has been made.
    5 points
  45. See the difference between us and Freo though, Collingwood wanted a top 25 pick, so we've made trades to improve our offer and we're proactively looking for a fair deal in line with their request

  46. It beggars belief that these journalistic imbeciles like Ralph and Barrett still use the absolutely moronic points value system as gospel. It is based on the NFL points system whose draft has over 250 picks and whose teams have effectively infinite list spots. Pick 60 in the NFL is probably the equivalent of pick 20 in the AFL. Most of the points allocations are hence completely skewed and clubs using the system (not including clubs mining picks for father son matching, a rort) would be hugely exploitable. Pick 53 has an effective points value of nothing and pick 43 is only marginally more valuable. No club in their right mind would give up pick 14 for picks 33, 43 and 53 (father son pick harvesting notwithstanding) when a free list spot automatically gets you pick 55.

  47. I don't think we need to, i think North would be insane not to take him, even if he decided to leave after 1 year they're going to turn a pre season draft selection into at least 2 first round picks, plus Jackson is definitely going to make them better and they'd have to back themselves to get him to stay. it's a no brainer from Norths perspective to take him
