  1. “They’ve gone May and Lever as part of their big spend, who are very good players, but what influence can they really have on winning games of football?” David King. 🙉

  2. Gotta feel for the umpires here. They’ve done everything they could do, but it just wasn’t quite enough.

  5. Everyone relax will ya. We don’t have a ruckman for one game against a bottom 4 team. Half the comp plays without one every week.

  8. Wow in the space of 2 matches the Weid has gone from not in the side to No.1 ruckman!

  9. Luke Beveridge is IMO the least effective coach in the AFL with Saints coach not far ahead. I think Bulldogs would be a much better club with even David Noble. And Bevo seems to get worse by the week. How he has survived after some of his crazy press conferences with his eyes darting comically left to right, looking for spies, is astounding.

  10. 8.00am. Still nothing on AFL website on Oliver's contract, yet lots of articles on minor selection decisions. Barely rates a mention on Fox and the Age web sites . Arguable the best player and the most sort after if OOC, signs for life and it isn't news? Not Big news! He is chronically underappreciated. He deserves far more recognition and accolades. Edit. Refers to AFL 'Home' page of their website.

  14. Another conspiracy/rumour floating around is that Goodwin wasn’t keen on Jackson flying to Adelaide because he was concerned that if he saw WA on the in-flight map it would make him homesick and tilt his decision away from Melbourne. Both theories entirely possible.

  15. My view about Aaron Bradtke last year was that he was being played in the key defensive positions because he wasn’t developing as a ruckman. In any event, the record shows that Bradtke was registered with VAFA B Section club Old Haileybury on 17 March, 2022 and has only managed 3 games at that level, the last of which was on 28 May, 2022. This indicates that he’s not doing anything to suggest that the decision to delist him was incorrect.
    6 points
  16. My point was that, even in an emergency, Bradtke still wouldn't be the answer to any of those questions. His VFL form also reinforces that delisting him was not a mistake. Of course we will have to look at additional ruck depth for next year.

  17. Adelaide lost Dangerfield, lost the GF the next year (plus Lever) and cratered thereafter. Geelong lost Tim Kelly, lost the following GF to Richmond and received draft picks that turned into Cooper Stephens, Ryan Angwin, Jeremy Sharp and Ronin O'Connor. Fremantle lost Lachie Neale to Brisbane for, effectively, Jesse Hogan and Xavier O'Halloran, and did nothing for several years. Gold Coast lost Dion Prestia for Jack Scrimshaw and did nothing since. Port Power lost Shaun Burgoyne, made 3 finals series in the next 10 years, and got back Jay Nash, Andrew Moore and Jasper Pittard. This isn't to say that thing always turn out badly, but saying that "clubs who lose big name players never end up really losing" is not correct.

  25. Tonight I am at Rod Laver to see Disney on ice with my GD,s. And this reminds me of how stupid outdoor night sporting events in Winter melb. are. No harder to get here than the footy and it is pleasant inside and not an umpire in sight.

  26. This is factually incorrect. Max is possibly the best tap ruckman of all time. Both his hit outs and hits to advantage are elite

  27. Interesting that our 3 main on ballers last week, Oliver, Petracca, and Viney , were arguably our 3 best on the field, despite, or perhaps because Gawn wasn’t playing. Without Gawn to direct the ball to them far more effectively than Jackson could, the above mentioned 3 had to play different roles last week and had to rely on cunning, experience, and sheer will to attain the ball. For this reason Jackson and Gawn’s absence could very well work in our favour…. though I do wish they WERE playing.

  28. I'd be happy if weed could be 15% as effective as teasdale in the ruck. Teasdale was a star, and in some ways ahead of his time in terms of his athleticism as a ruckman. I rate weed's ruck craft. I think it was 2019 when he played quite a few games at Casey as the main ruck. He held his own at vfl level and has done ok at afl level when he has had to ruck. The other bonus is he is in the game when rucking - and being physical is a non negotiable. If jacko can't play, I'm confident weed will be good cover. And a full game as the number one ruck might be a real positive for him. My head says weed won't make it. But - and I'm not sure why (apart from being an optimist by nature) - I have a feeling he will.

  30. Before I got kayo 3 years back, for years i religiously watched footy classified (and occasionally Monday's experts on 7 though that was execrable). But really have almost completely stopped watching free to air TV, so that routine stopped. Have tried to watch fc a few times in the interim, but can't stand Sam McClure, so stopped. And for a relatively recently retired coach, Ross Lyon provides nothing of value. This is a supposed expert who, despite our barnstorming form coming into the finals, was sure the lions would beat us in the semi last season, was even more sure the cats would beat us in the prelim. And I think tipped the dogs to win. Since I've had kayo, until this season, id watch every episode of 360, on tbe couch and first crack. It is probably partly due to the fact we don't get discussed much this season, despite being the benchmark team, but like you doc I find myself either nor bothering to watch or skipping through to any snippets that are vaguely of interst. The fox shows are all increasingly a joke. Wheatley and robbo are just weird. It's like watching a condescending pastoral care worker humouring a dementia patient. I like montagna, but like not forgetting Lyons stupdidy, we should not forget he suggested just two weeks ago on first crack that the dees were a chance of missing finals. Yes I know he was just creating some click worthy noise, but he wasn't joking and the first crack is supposedly all about a deeper analysis of the game. I mean c'mon, the dees miss the finals? When he said that, sportsbet had us at $1.04 to make the finals (one win later, we are now $1.01) and something like $20 to miss finals (now $31). And forget David King. He was all freo are not the real deal - they beat us and suddenly they are the real deal, and lose to the blues and he is off them again King was also big on the lions, even after their loss to the hawks in round 10 or whenever that was, even though it highlighted their big defensive problems (he said after that game that it was a blip and was a Mulligan given it was in tassie). Roll forward a few weeks and he is off the lions, because of, you guessed it, their big defensive problems. I know it shouldn't, but it does my head in.

  31. Jackson is a lifetime ruckman with aerobic abilities to outlast his competitors for the next 10 years. Good elite ruckmen are harder to find than midfielders in my view. We really want Jackson to stay at MFC and become one of the greats. For him to go, we’d want big compensation. Luke Jackson = Andrew Brayshaw and a 1st round 2022 pick. I don’t care if Brayshaw wins the Brownlow or finishes top 3. That’s the deal.

  32. I'm pretty much at that point now. I'll watch on the couch and first crack but usually on delay so I can skip the rubbish. 360 occasionally but skip most parts that aren't about us (or about Essendon imploding). So much better when you're not consuming the rubbish commentary that goes along with the game m.

  34. I love the video. So many footballers of this calibre can be knobs. Clarry aint. He's a good decent country boy. The night he got drafted, he gave his mum a big hug (he gets his famous hair from her). It was a wonderful gesture. If my last memory in life is his Fist of God goal from the Grand Final, I will die content. To behold perfection.

  37. Today we remember Sean Wight who passed away on this day 11 years ago. A great footballer and, along with Jimmy, one of the success stories of the Irish experiment. Sean Wight (15 March 1964 – 30 June 2011) Sean is a member of the Melbourne Football Club Hall of Fame and was named as one of the 150 Heroes of the club during the club's 150th celebrations. The 185 cm tall, 85 kg Wight played for the Melbourne Football Club between 1985 and 1995, playing 150 games and scoring 63 goals. He is not only the first player to be associated with the Irish experiment, but also considered to be one of its most successful products. Wight was scouted by the Melbourne Football Club's Ron Barassi and Barry Richardson on a visit to Ireland in 1982 as having the potential to play Australian rules football. Before playing Australian rules, he played Gaelic football with the Kerry minor (Under-18) team which reached the final of the 1982 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship and with the Listowel Emmets club - the same club as Tadhg Kennelly. Wight was brought to Australia in 1983. He was part of an Under 19 VFL premiership side just weeks after his arrival from Ireland in 1983 and was widely hailed for his rapid conversion, though others who joined him from Ireland had much less success. Wight made his VFL debut in 1985 and became a regular backline player, recognisable with his trademark moustache. Wight played in two Demons night premiership winning sides, in 1987 and 1989. He began to develop a reputation as a dour defender, with an exceptional ability to not only spoil opponents marking attempts, but take high marks himself. Wight, along with fellow recruit Jim Stynes was a member of Melbourne's 1988 VFL Grand Final team which lost to Hawthorn. Retiring in 1995, Wight's career was somewhat overshadowed by Stynes, whose career in the midfield earned more accolades and media attention. Wight died on 30 June 2011 after a short battle with lung cancer. From Wikipedia

  38. Best Melbourne player ever when it's all said and done. Absolute superstar who gets better every game. Been consistently outstanding since he first had his debut. An absolute joy to be able to watch Clarry for another 8 years.

  39. No he didn't. The club organised the video and if he is to be believed, the victim accepted the apology and was happy to support the apology and video. Tex actually looked extremely uncomfortable in the video. Obviously wasn't his idea. FWIW, I would imagine if every AFL player's private comments to a mate were made public, there would be a lot of embarrassed people and clubs in the AFL

  42. Indeed, but I'm grateful that they are annually remembered. What makes our club special is the quality of its people. I'm much happier and feel much better rewarded to have been a member of a club with people like Sean Wight, irrespective of our onfield results. Premierships are the cream; the people are the substance.

  49. People forget that in 1987, he was the Irish recruit everyone spoke of on the front and back of every paper and on every news bulletin, especially in the late rounds and finals where he was unbelievable. Injuries, especially knee injuries stopped us seeing his best for much of thereafter, but was super brave and a super athlete. Champion player, even better person... sadly missed.
