I used to think that a lot of the complaining about racism was compounded by people being too thin skinned. I now understand that I will never completely understand the feelings of a person who experiences racism because I can never walk in their shoes. Fortunately for me I have come to understand that most people with a skin colour other than white experience the problem on a regular basis. We have to do better as individuals and as a group.13 points

Definitely a train wreck of a press conference. I listened in disbelief from both a PR viewpoint and moral standpoint. It started off as embarrassing bur ended as shameful. It reflects a leader that has run out of time and one who lacks humility and wisdom. A soon to be ex President, like another recent ex President who lost his way by his inability to see outside his own bubble. Ego and conceit in your own importance and infallibility always ends badly. Only crocodile tears will be shed.9 points

True. The Boys Club is variation on the theme of “boys sticking together”. A group of men protecting their turf and one another. A milder term may be the word contacts or connections. It may include women but generally men are the ones who seek power, influence and status. At the end of the day, Eddie is a product of his environment. Increasingly, we see in the media and entertainment industry, lots of Eddies. They do not know humility and contrition. However, they do not know what it takes “to make it.” Often that is to be loud, forceful, aggressive, opportunistic, opinionated and to be both seen and heard. Getting your own way irrespective of the methods becomes laudable. Hurting other people’s feelings particularly those without power and influence is a way of being. Regret does not feature in their vocabulary. These days the marketing people call it developing your brand or product. Let’s face it, we live in a world focussed on selling, marketing and spin. Eddies response and comments are no surprise and are entirely natural for this media beast.7 points

up until the last few years when it became clear what a weapon a 3 point shot was compared to a 2 there's a good ringer article here: https://www.theringer.com/nba/2019/2/27/18240583/3-point-boom-nba-daryl-morey i guess, ultimately, 3 points will always be worth more than 2, thus the risk-reward ratio is skewed 50% higher to the benefit of shooting a 3 than a mid-range 2 not to mention that - for the most part - the chance of an offensive rebound is far greater off the back of a missed 3 than a missed 2, due to the spread on the floor the other big change is that so many more players at that elite level are getting what's considered 'wide open' 3 point attempts; the % of players shooting higher % from outside the arc has increased exponentially over the years: from 22-24 foot (i.e. just beyond the arc) the likelihood of making a shot is insignificantly different from 4-21 feet to make it worthwhile to take the greater risk and earn 50% more points per shot made: people like the curry brothers, klay thompson, dame lillard etc are freaks when it comes to the long-range shot, but there's good reason as to why it has expanded as the go-to shot from back in the final years of jordan: but, back to our side, FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T HANDBALL OVER YOUR HEAD!! taking a 3-point shot and handballing over your head are COMPLETELY UNRELATED as far as i am concerned, as the 3-point shot is a scoring attempt, whereas a handball over your head is effectively a no look pass to someone behind you which is just a ludicrous thing to do i hate seeing our players do it7 points

We do have a history! The most recent I recall is in the Neeld days (any surprise given he was ex Collingwood) when reportedly Davey (and maybe others) approached Misfud at the AFL. It was all a bit of a mess of the 'he said, I said' variety and Misfud apologised for misunderstanding. I doubt PJ did an internal review when appointed or just knew what was required and set about righting the wrongs. Not sure if that is what triggered the Matty Whelan role being created but it was a good move. We also developed a charter to engage with aboriginal communities (can't recall what it is called) and what we stand for in that regard. Sometimes these can not be worth the paper they are written on but I feel mfc takes our obligations seriously. And our investment with the MCG community oval in Alice. Not saying we should pat ourselves on the back but I feel we have come some way but still lots more to do. Collingwood has no idea and done precious little. I even had to laugh at their attempts to say they tried to get indigenous players in the draft. But they were all tied to Academies so those clubs matched the bid. Surprise, Surprise! So were they even serious of trying to get indigenous players to the club...6 points

But Cotchin and Martin are 1 and 2 and Bolton and M.Pickett are in the top 20, using your logic the Tigers must have finished last in 2020. All the top players are going to be high on the clanger list becuase they get so much of the ball, those that try and be creative, Martin, Trac, Danger, Bont etc. will make mistakes, while Oliver, Cripps, Adams etc. who win the ball in close and try to use it qucikly will also be impacted. Yes we need to be cleaner, but moreso on the outside, in the delivery into fwd50 and there's clearly been a lot of work done on that area so far this pre-season.5 points

Their CEO (i don't even know who it is) and board must be in the firing line atm. I mean they commissioned the report. It's hard not to think this was strategic in terms of responding to Lumumba's accusations and getting ahead of potential compensation claims. Their own report is then incredibly scathing and includes the finding that club’s racism resulted in 'profound and enduring harm' to many individuals, families, & communities. Which aint going to help them in any compensation case. They sit on the report. For two months. In all likelihood it is leaked because of this decision. So they lose complete control of the narrative. They then green light Eddie to freestyle and respond at length to the leaked report, and try to spin it as a proud day for the club. I mean what were they thinking agreeing to let Eddie front the media (i understand his power - but that is part of the problem). And once they green light Eddie to be the club's spokesperson surely to goodness the CEO is also at that presser. Or even better they release a carefully worded written response and schedule a presser for say Friday to create some space and control. What a complete shambles from a governance perspective.5 points

An atrocious response. Completely tone deaf, and is an astounding real-time demonstration of the problem that they have. No apology, ownership, contrition at all. Trying to essentially say ‘it’s an industry problem and we should get special marks for noticing it first’ is a disgraceful cop out. When the report says individuals have been harmed, this response is morally, ethically and socially unacceptable. Mrs Nekkid said “in the TV reports they didnt even interview a non Anglo player” - i had to let Mrs B down gently that Collingwood have none of these at the moment. (But maybe some of them like chinese food?). Imagine if Nev had gone there - would have been wheeled out as the token indigenous player to carry the can. Thank god he stayed, he deserves much better than that. Eddie is posturing for Eddie. He is doing great harm to CFC.5 points

Sports that through greed or desperation put everything behind paywalls will suffer as well. Free to air TV still reaches the widest audience which then keeps it relevant and makes more money in the long term. The question is how much longer free to air tv will even exist and if everything ends up owned by big tech in the end. The thing I'd like to see is members rewarded with a free or discounted streaming package. Pay $300 for a membership, here's a link to access all 22 Melbourne games streamed to you.4 points

That might be how it started but it permeates through all of society. 'Jobs for the Boys' is a variation of the theme. As is 'nepotism'.4 points
-
The term the 'boy's club' seemingly refers to the idea jobs goes to 'good blokes' who are connected and that those in the club ALWYAS have each other's back. It seems to me in Melbourne (and perhaps Australia) the 'boys club' also incorporates the powerful network of private school boys where power is jealously guarded. But it seems that more often than not the term 'boys club', whilst it is usually used as a criticism, it is almost always a pretty weak criticism. (not saying that's how you are using it JD). That's to say it is used to explain a scenario (like Healy reflexively defending Eddie) but that's are far as it goes in terms of critiquing the poisonous impact of the concept. But really the 'boy's club (which might as well be called the white anglo boys club) is at the heart of issues such a systemic racism and systemic gender inequality. It is rife in Australian business and even more so in our big sporting codes. With the AFL it infects the clubs, the AFL (polo anyone, or perhaps drinks at the Warrnambool carnival?) and the media that reports on it. And the motto of The Boys Club? Status Quo4 points
-
I popped on sports day to enjoy some schadenfreude, but all I heard was Gerard Healy questioning how there could be systemic racism because Eddie and Buckley n others there have such gentle giving hearts. Gross to hear one of The boys club that works with him spouting that rubbish, so conflicted and ignorant. Not many in the AFL media prepared to actually go hard because they walk the same aisles.4 points

It is typical PR spin to pretend a disaster is a great success and something to be proud of. If you pay attention to what is being said it is usually clear that they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes. But when that lie is just too much of a stretch to be at all credible, it is piling a disaster upon a disaster to try that sort of wheeze(*). Whoever advised Eddie (himself?) to try that line needs a new profession. (*) For the ultimate in PR wheezes watch the Absolute Power BBC radio and TV series with Stephen Fry and John BIrd as the owners of a scurrilous PR firm.3 points

Eddie said at the conference that today is a proud day for Collingwood . What is the proud day Collingwood? Where is the remorse Eddie? You just don't get it.3 points

That further supports my view that the report and Eddie's narrative is to avoid responsibility/admission of guilt/compensation. Deny! Deny! Deny!3 points

Eddie would be choking on the idea of paying compensation even more than trying to say s...o...r...r....... Edit: Jack Niall's report it-was-anything-but-a-proud-day-for-collingwood says "...although it did not address Heritier Lumumba’s case, on the grounds that the 2010 premiership player had chosen not to play ball with the review". Convenient! Hard to understand why they couldn't still investigate what happened internally. End result: No-one to apologise to, no-one to compensate. The more that comes out the more staged the whole thing looks.3 points

Good old Gil jumping in saying racism is bad lol, the AFL should have done more to censure McGuire over the years. They’ve let Goodes and Lumumba down many times and washed there hands of the issue.3 points

The arrogance of the man is staggering. Maybe 10 years ago you could get away with sweeping this under the carpet but thank god its 2021 where racism such as this is no longer trivialised and ignored.3 points

According to Peter Ryan of The Age, Eddie said the Magpies desperately wanted to reconcile with Lumumba, who chose not to be interviewed by the independent review. "He's one of us. He doesn't feel that at the moment and it breaks our heart. We want him to be one of us," McGuire said. Last October Lumumba lodged a claim in the Supreme Court alleging Collingwood breached its duty of care....that he was subjected to racial abuse and the club did nothing. His lawyer, Rhea Dillon said, "the report vindicates our client's claims." 'Lumumba is seeking acknowledgment of the racism, an apology and compensation.' Lumumba has used social media since last year to voice his claims and seek an apology from Collingwood. In December he said on social media he had been denied access to the report, despite it being completed. I have put in bold the key words. Still now, Eddie cannot give an apology. He still does not get it. Lumumba was never made to feel he was "one of us". That is the whole point. Those two words, 'apology' and 'compensation' must be so frightening to him. Why is it so hard for this man to say sorry? Footnote: Tony Armstrong told The Age "It was disappointing that ( the press conference ) didn't open with an apology. Very disappointing.....I'm pretty frustrated."3 points

I read what Eddie said, but there are always certain words missing from his statements. Simple words, like 'sorry' or 'apologize'. Simple words which are sometimes all people would like to hear. It doesn't seem like much to ask. But Eddie apparently has never heard of these words or he just doesn't want to use them.3 points

It's not just racism either, its the culture of the organisation and racism is only one aspect. Look at the way they tried to protect Shaw/Didak/Swan/Sidebottom (accidentally walked out the front door looking for the toilet ? ) etc when they were involved in off the field incidents. Look at the comments made by Eddie and the other Triple M boofheads about Caroline Wilson when the Big Freeze was on a few years back. Its a toxic culture all round (not saying its different from other clubs but its more transparent as their Pres is in the media all the time and often putting his foot in his mouth).3 points

I must admit I thought this report would be a whitewash... To their credit they didn't hold back. Not so much to the board's credit they sat on it...it took a leak for it to come out. It would be interesting to see a similar enquiry held into the AFL... I would expect findings like this, insert AFL for Collingwood There is a gap between what Collingwood Football Club says it stands for and what it does The club is more likely to react to media coverage about a racist incident than complaints made within the club Collingwood's response has often been perceived as one where claims of racism are dealt with in terms of damage control and protecting the brand3 points
