If I divulge my source then they will never speak to me again. You only have to look who is in the leadership group to narrow the field. Clubs don’t match the offer because the RFA gets offered overs so and more than the Existing club is prepared to offer, the Crows matched the offer for Danger and then Geelong had to trade but Danger had compelling reasons to return to Geelong. I know it is a ruthless business but if a leader ask you if you are staying and how are you going and you say unequivocally Yes I am red & blue through and through, then you have to take them at their word, don’t you. If they stay they haven’t breached that trust if they have been untruthful then it doesn’t matter because they will be somewhere else. Do you think Scully ever had any remorse for lying to Jim? Viney’ should manager is on record as saying the original offer was too low but he has a contract now to consider that is commensurate with being a former leader and 3rd in the B&F. The ball is in Viney’s court. I have only reported what I have been told from someone I trust and the club has so far done the right thing by the club. Viney will be well compensated with a long contract. The delay suggests he is still thinking about it which is his perogative.16 points

Pickett, finishing 7th in the best and fairest in a bottom 4 club isn't exactly a glowing endorsement on Frost. If he was as good as you've made him out to be there why didn't he finish top 4? Watched several Hawthorn games this year and he has not improved one bit. Was poor and butchered the footy majority of the game. One prime example was against saints when Hawthorn had all of the momentum in the last quarter and he took a kicked out, sprinted 25m and kicked it straight to a St Kilda player who kicked a goal and took all of Hawthorn's momentum away and cost them a potential win. Its no coincidence that after trading Frost out our defence was the best its been for years. Average player at best.11 points

On SEN about an hour ago: The original offer for Viney was too low for the player and the counter offer to the club was too high. Subsequent negotiations have arrived at an acceptable figure for both parties but they are waiting on cap sizes to be ratified by the AFL. in further news Isaac Smith has expressed strong interest in the Dees’ offer and is weighing up his options10 points

Jack has advised the club he will sign the 4 year contract in front of him. The formalities will follow. The delay is around AFL confirmations on 2021 caps and list sizes.10 points

The only thing I’m wishing to see in this series is for Geelong to go out in straight sets once again. Then to read the subsequent uproar from their gormless supporters (apologies to my Mum and sisters).9 points

Tom Morris informed before on Fox Footy that Jack Viney's management have advised Geelong that he will not be going there as as Jack has agreed to a contract extension.8 points

In my view this result vindicates the "Blunder" of letting him go when we did. I saw enough of him in HAWKS games to say that his "Percieved" deficiencies have been eradicated to a greater degree and he played some good solid football. Its interesting to see what coaches that know how to get the best out of players do so. I reckon though, that Sam Frost will continue to improve not dissimilar to Bachar Houli when he went from Essendon to Richmond. If that happens then the blunder in letting him go will be even more pronounced and damning. I Was disappointed to see him leave Melbourne and even more so now!7 points

I'm not 100% against Brown (as much as he annoys me as free kick actor) because he at least provides us with a number 1 target that makes each of our other forwards more effective. Weideman as a second tall this year was very effective, but got smothered as a number 1. But I think we can use our chips in a better way. I think Petty can play as the contesting forward with Weid and Jackson being the dangerous secondaries, much in the way the McStay plays for Brisbane. Brisbane's worst loss this year was against Richmond when McStay was out of the lineup and Richmond key Brisbane to 4 goals (admittedly it was 4.17!). McStay only kicked 10 goals for the year, but he kills the long kick forward, which allows players like Cameron, Hipwood, Rayner, McCarthy and their midfielders to get good opportunities. Weideman did this at the end of the year when forced to, but he more valuable as the second banana. Jackson can play anywhere because he's a freak. But there's only so much salary cap and draft assets to spread around, and there are probably other way we can spend them rather than a key forward. But I can also see the argument in favour of recruiting a high quality marking forward at below market price.7 points

For all the people bagging Tomlinson on a wing....we may have recruited him for that role but he is clearly better in our backline. He has barely missed a beat all year. For you baggers you would prefer Omac? I don't get the angst about him one bit. He is automatic best 22 and he rarely stands out doing silly things during the course of a game. Worth the $$$ we spent on him.7 points

Not really. The club could be saying if the cap is $x, you will get deal A, if it is $y you will get deal B. He says he is happy to sign either, but obviously can't sign anything until the cap is known. And presumably there'd be a sliding scale between x and y.7 points

Looks like you're on the money here. https://coupler.foxsports.com.au/api/v1/article/amp/afl/afl-trade-news-rumours-whispers-2020-jack-viney-geelong-isaac-smith-melbourne-demons-updates-tom-morris/news-story/c3e09490ae2a954c0fdf3f4b07201787?__twitter_impression=true Meanwhile, Geelong has not been officially notified but senses Jack Viney will re-sign at Melbourne on a long-term deal. Demons insiders are now supremely confident the hard-nosed midfielder will remain as negotiations continue between his agent Tom Petroro and the club. It’s understood Viney’s preference is to stay and Melbourne has raised its offer since initial7 points

Not fake, Jack told a senior member of the leadership group he was staying after seeing the contract. That person is taking Jack at his word. If Jack is sounding out other offers they would have to be much better as an RFA the club can match the offer and Geelong are not noted for over paying.6 points

But yet you still find the need to reply, and question their sources? If you didn't take it for granted, then why reply? I mean its no different to you coming on here and rambling on how much insight you have into Paddy McCartin because you apparently you know the family well.. Up to the individual whether theu want to believe or not. Don't think they need to be criticised for it though DD.5 points

I will maintain that letting Frost go, ahead of OMac was a massive oversight that i still cannot understand. Yes he was a turnover king, but so were half the team. The only reason we noticed him more is that half back turnovers whilst in transition usually result in scores against. He is a very good lockdown defender, with great closing speed and can play big and tall. Granted he has average to below average disposal efficiency but compared against Omac will beat him in almost every skill attribute.5 points

I' m not particularly fussed that Smith won't be a long term player, we've got one year to make progress in finals with Goodwin, we've got 2 years of Goody under contract. We've got a limited crack with May & Gawn. We could well be at the stage where we have to have a mini blow up of the list if we're not competing in finals next year. I'm comfortable with getting a low commitment (in years, not effort) player in the list to fill a need. We won't be burdened with a long term contract if we have to shake things up in a year. We still have clear needs, lets fill them as quickly & efficiently as possible and get cracking.5 points

Absolutely Jackson and if he returns well from injury then Petty as well would make more sense in that CHF role. Brown has a big tank too and comes up the ground to contest, he's an excellent endurance runner, but he averages 1.1 tackles a game and Weid's not much better at 1.3. We've seen Weid play in a 3 tall set up or Weid with Preuss and none of it's worked. He needs to be one of the main men crashing packs and complimented by a player who has different skills. I can't think of a team that plays 2 big key forwards that don't get involved at ground level. The Saints are tall but both their ruckmen and even more so Max King are great on the ground as is Membrey. Riewoldt was struggling for a while earlier this year but he's got an all round game. Kennedy teams up with Oscar Allen and Darling because they move like midfielders. The Cats don't even play a second key forward, they rotate Stanley or Esava down there for a contest and otherwise use Danger and Rohan. Jackson is that kind of Oscar Allen/King brothers type athlete that you pair with a less mobile marking forward. I don't think Brown and Weid go well together at all.5 points

Yes, but Geelong and Hawthorn have consistently had something else to compensate for contracts under the market rate: premierships.4 points

His dramatic improvement thanks to manifestly superior coaching certainly is notable. In just one year he's gone from 9th B&F in a bottom four team to 7th B&F in a bottom four team. Best of luck to him and there's every reason to believe he'll crank out three or four more seasons of respectable football, but there's nothing of great importance to Melbourne in this. Just be happy that Frostball didn't propel Hawthorn back up the ladder and we've now got (Hawthorn's) pick 23 in this draft thanks to the trade.4 points

There would be some weird logic if they did win it. I will have ended up in some very low probability branch of the wave function.4 points

Interestingly, when Tomlinson was playing as a key defender this year we were 5 wins and 2 losses. With Oscar 3W / 4L. With Joel Smith alone (or just May and Lever), 1W / 2L. So he clearly fits the defensive system pretty well and a mobile big body who can keep opponents on the ground in marking contests. Matt Suckling would have with the Bulldogs had he not injured his achilles int he semi-final. And let's see what happens with Grant Birchall ....4 points

That is incorrect. A trade was made but an FA bid was never officially placed or matched.4 points

Petty 20 yo can play forward as he has shown in the past and recruited as a key backman . Great to see the loyalty. Sparrow an up and coming future midfielder imo will make the grade. It is good to see our future signing up. They are great kids.4 points

This thread is laughable, @picket fence. And @DeeSpencer, I'd take Tomlinson over Frost every day of the week. One is a headless chook, the other you don't see much of and the players around him step up. Classic role player. Frost... classic headless chook. The 21st century has seen a rise in project players. I hope we witness a decline in these speculative athletes with little football understanding. It's not something you can suddenly teach to a 20 year old that's used to running around in circles on an Aths track. Probably explains why he runs around in circles on a football field.4 points

Remember that time when Mahoney expressed how happy he was in an interview after bringing in 'the specialist wingman', Adam Tomlinson? And then he was dropped after round four? And now he plays CHB? I remember. The club is broken. The way we've handled our cap. The types of players we've brought in years too late. The faith that Goodwin and co have had in some of the same plodders year after year. It's a genuine embarrassment. The only way we're going to make a genuine stride forward next year is by making some big changes to this list like the Saints did last year.4 points

Seriously, our backline is not the problem. We have significantly bigger issues to rectify. Frost leaving is a non issue, particularly given we got pick 23 in return for him4 points

Baker looked ok in the last couple of games, but he certainly hasn't shown enough that we should be going all in on him. I think we need to bring in some mature heads, especially ones that fill needs.4 points

Don't care really. This season died a long time ago for me. I would like the finals to be over so that we can get down to the important stuff like player trades, staffing changes etc. It is going to be a long October...4 points

Always very interesting seeing how people respond to trade targets. We’ve had how many players roll through the wing position in the last few years and still have one that is left empty. Smith would be a great addition for the role he can play, he’s been one of the best wingmen in the game for near on a decade. Ed Langdon has been talked about as one of the recruits of the year on here and has had an enormous impact on our game. Smith could take him to another level again with his knowledge and leadership. Fills a position with a much better option than what we currently have and will help Langdon/Baker become better players as well. Also keeps another one of our NQR blokes (Jones/Melksham/AVB/ANB etc) out of the side so our depth becomes better. I saw it mentioned elsewhere, but the way to improve our bottom 6 players is to keep recruiting guys that fit in our best 10-12. He ticks all the boxes.4 points

Smith's likely too old to draw compensation unless the money is a crazy amount. If Viney goes there's still a chance we match and trade. If not and we are keen to sign Smith and it won't draw any compensation due to his age we could always trade for him instead. Give Hawthorn a token late pick upgrade. We can protect ourselves by making the second year conditional on a number of games in the first year. Or add other incentives. The most important questions are whether Smith has anything left and if he makes us noticeably better and helps us become a contender. Most things after that can be worked around.4 points

Ratugolea was dropped again for the final. I would chase him hard. He could help out in the ruck too if we clear Preuss.4 points

Jordan Lewis: You’ll love it at Melbourne Smithy, they’ll pay you way more than at the Hawks and give you an extra year or two. Plus, you just have to stand on the ground and point. The only down side is there’s no toilets at training.4 points

For those on here who have met Jack, this seems like a ridiculous thing to say, because he's a great and selfless person. but he's not a selfless player, he tries to be but the way he impacts the midfield takes away from everyone else in there. it's no conincidence the best our midfield has looked in a long time was our 2018 finals run with Oliver, Harmes and Brayshaw as the 3 main mids. Pace, Spread, inside/outside, system, defense and attack. IMO that's our starting 3 mids with Petracca rotating through3 points
