  3. nah, that's consistent forward line pressure i can completely understand why anb holds his spot despite his woeful disposal - he runs all day and works hard defensively, something that few in our side seem to be capable of doing consistently

  4. I'm seriously confused by this paragraph. New to the club to play in a position we targeted him for, played well (or in your words, "very good") in the preseason, the two players you mentioned aren't challenging for the same position, yet you "understand" he was "borderline" to get a game? Either you have misunderstood, or you are trolling. Possibly both.

  5. One thing that surprised me is that Tomlinson said HB he's probably the best stoppage player going around - if he's getting the chance to play in the guts in match sims, he's not exactly being wrapped in cotton wool!

  6. 1 game only. Retired after the game. A raised middle finger to the radical Islamic fascists who took all of those innocent lives. Remember that time like it was yesterday. God bless the Nth Melbourne footy club for getting him back to a match fitness level that allowed a farewell game. Legend.

  7. How disappointing that we're not the first club listed when they talk about MCG tenants. The MCG is our home, the others are just squatters. (***enter @Sir Why You Little for comment...!!!***)

  9. Serious Answer: Yes. I will be watching when we play Saturday week. Really looking forward to the game. I would also be interested in watching the curtain raiser if it was on in the same way I would watch the Casey games. Like to see how they are developing.

  10. 'Early Christmas present': MCG tenant clubs get multi-million-dollar windfall “Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond, Hawthorn, Carlton and Essendon will each receive home game payments estimated at between $150,000 and $200,000 per match for the remainder of the shortened season.” Of course, the AFL has to include a fair share of home games for the MFC at the MCG. I’ve argued that means 9 MCG home games this year would be appropriate (given we finished last year in the bottom half) and that means 8 of the last 12 games should be played there.

  11. The other exciting thing about this story is that my wonderful spouse, who has many excellent qualities but cannot count 'high level of interest in football' among them, knew about this before I did and made a point of bringing it up. Proof of true love, I say.

  12. Let's just consider for a moment (work with me here) that players might be able to both speak well AND play well, just as they might be able to both speak badly AND play badly. Two ideas at once. Perhaps too radical for Demonland.

  13. Even All Australian careers come to an end. Hibberd had an average season in 2019 and his first game this year wasn't good. As for Rivers, well we can only go on training reports as there will be no VFL this year...but his last game against North in pre season was very good. He may not get up for the first game back but he is at least putting the pressure on a few of the senior players and should be ahead of Wagner and Hore for a call up.

  16. Look I'm optimistic but it should be noted that he got up to play for Peel Thunder in the WAFL a number of times and broke down. He has been this far before. If he can sustain it at even 80% of his original capacity he'll be one of our best players.

  17. It will be interesting to see some more footage. At present he's 'training the house down' by just being out there. Is he actually doing things on the track that warrant the media attention or are they looking for a story in a desperately slow period? Full credit to the club for taking a risk and the medical staff for getting him to this point, let's hope the last portion sees us reap the rewards for years to come

  18. Old Dee, I live over in Europe and miss going to the live matches. I am always watching the games live each and every time the Dees play. I would take a win in any match. this season is compromised but I am sure that none of the players will be holding back. If we get to a finals series and a resolved season, I hope that the Dees are at the top, playing in the final and win the bloody thing.

  24. Mrs W and I get to about 11 or 12 live games each season and so we are really missing it this year. She of course pointed out today that we will miss the QB game on Monday. I replied inappropriately and got the death stare. I find the losses and the lack of a Premiership a bit like a kidney stone, I still hope it will pass. Yes, it will be painful but the relief will be joyous, I just hope I'm here to feel it. So each season I have high hopes and if it doesn't come to be then I will hope the pain will end the next season. Along the way I try to enjoy the small relief of a TMac miracle goal, a Jurrah mark, a Jetta defensive effort, a Davey rundown tackle, a Viney or AVB hurt the opposition moment or a Hannan run and goal.

  25. Sure I envision the team being: In: Weid, Vanders, Smith, Bennell, Jones, Salem. Out: Brown, Spargo, Hibberd, ANB, Lockhart and Bedford. Jetta May Lever Salem OMac Smith Langdon Viney Tomlinson Melksham TMac Harmes Bennell Weid Fritch Gawn Oliver Petracca Jones, Kozi, Brayshaw, Vanders Coaches want Harmes in the backline but I think you get the athleticism and rebound through Smith. Rolling through the midfield you can put: Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Harmes, Salem, Bennell, Vanders, Jones and Melksham. In the podcast Inside Melbourne, they seem to be floating the possibility of taking OMac out for Smith and sounds like they are looking at Lockhart as coming into the back line. In that case I would put Jones on to start and Lockhart starting off the bench. Probably a better side actually, better rebounding side anyway.

  33. if only he played well my understanding is his spot in the 22 for round 1 was borderline and was saved by a very good preseason hit-out plus the injuries to salem and jones if he plays like he did against meth coke again he'll be out of the side pretty quickly

  35. Expect this to be cleaned up soon but util then... @hardtack @drysdale demon Believe that if you wish. General Mattis has a good take on this. For the Trumpet supporters, they could do with listening to the good general and many other thinking conservatives (not democrats or left wingers) who can see the damage being done by this President. The sensationalist headlines unfortunately don't look deep into the issues. Trouble is we will get caught up in it, we are not immune. General James Mattis was one of Donald Trump's most high-profile appointments. Mattis resigned as Trump's secretary of defence in December of 2018, but has largely kept quiet about his former boss … until today. Mattis has issued a pretty extraordinary statement just now, saying Mr Trump makes a "mockery of the Constitution": Mr Mattis said he was "angry and appalled" by what he had watched this week, and threw his support behind those at peaceful protests:

  36. I'd love to see Rivers get a go and we could absolutely do without Hibberd's desperate long bombs to no one, I'd just be worried that putting a young kid in to the backline puts more defensive pressure on the likes of Lever and Salem and might shift Harmes deeper in to a more defensive role. After last year the coaches have to prioritise a working defensive structure. If Rivers is really excelling with his defensive work as well as with the ball then get him in.

  37. i think everyone likes marty hore cos he's a good honest toiler the fact remains that he was in and out of our side last year when we finished 17th unfortunately - a bit like jayden hunt - if he's in our best 22 we're really not a very good side

  38. I'm very excited about Rivers, and believe the selection panel (not just Goodwin) will select Pig for this round for another opportunity, and look to blood Rivers when injury or form drops off. BUT I could be wrong. Where does this all leave Marty Hore... I really like him.. but perhaps I'm pumping up a good honest toiler?

  43. Oscar should be better this year with a full preseason but I just don't see any reason why he'd suddenly find the aggression and confidence to start taking marks or the quick mind and quick feet to attack the game. He can get back to what he was in 2018 which was a useful plodder to sit on the oppositions weaker key forward (if they have one) but his use then becomes about match ups. If there's a second big bloke who's too tall or strong for Lever or someone like Hibberd or Smith then Oscar gets a game, but if there's not a match up that suits Oscar I'd rather try and finally find out if Smith can get a run of games. In terms of repeat efforts to get the ball then Nath Jones is the logical choice at half forward. ANB has a wonderful defensive motor as well but he doesn't stick his tackles against the good teams, with shorter quarters a rotation of young smalls who tackle with more aggression like Pickett, Bedford or Chandler should be trialled. Spargo has the smarts and a pretty decent tank but he's entered the JKH zone of clearly not being comfortable to execute his skills or to mix it physically.

  44. Antifa isn't even an org, but a loose umbrella term for a multitude of left wing groups all with diff extremeties and aims, but all gathered around being anti fascist. For trump to want to declare "anti fascist" left wing groups terrorists and like tweets such as 'the only good democrat is a dead democrst" should raise some concerns over the looming spectre of fascism in the US But the point @drysdale demon is that there definitely are vested interests that want to incite violence and crush movements.

  48. Petracca getting more midfield time, instead of mostly on the flank. + Viney, + Oli, + Brayshaw... + occasional game time when he's ready, for Jackson. We don't have spaces for all of them, so some have to grow new skills. Harmes's proficiency inside, means he can go out, to develop further in the defence, for when we'll need him to do that, in our future. Totally agree, 'TPF39'.
