  2. No. 40 2017 Round 8 v Crows at Adelaide Oval I went across to see this game with a degree of hope but could not have expected the result. We’d just lost to the Hawks by 3 points to go 3-4 and so desperately wanted to make finals. Goodwin was coaching against his former team for the first time. Unfortunately a burst from the Crows put them up by about 5 goals about 15 minutes into the 2nd quarter. We looked benign. Suddenly a few goals awoke the contest and we went in 10 points down at the half. In the third quarter the Dees run exposed the Crows and we went on to win by 41 points. Bernie Vince celebrated his 200th game in another win over his former side. Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver were sensational. Mr.SpareParts Cameron Pedersen kicked 3 goals including the sealer in the last. Jonesy also kicked a beauty and celebrated. Amazing victory and it’s nice to get out of Adelaide alive. Admittedly most of the Crows fans left about halfway through the last. I picked up some nice bottles of red from Mclarenvale (D’arenberg) and returned to Vic with a smile. Melbourne 17.5.117 defeated Adelaide 9.12.66

  3. It may be becoming more and more likely that Bennell is going to light up the 'G ... and put paid to some of his supporter critics. The young man needs a break; we should be offering nothing but absolute encouragement to him with open arms.

  10. Extraordinary bad luck with injuries is the only reason we didn’t snaffle a flag in the 90’s. I mean the talent on our list was amazing. The Ox, Gazza, Jimmy, both Lovetts, Tingay, Charles, Neitz, the Febeys, Healy, Pike and in 94 Jakovich was still on our list for heavens sake. As I remember it in 93 Balme as coach tried to develop a new game plan and we dropped the first 4 games of the year and played well thereafter but missed the finals. In 94 we played well but dropped games to just sneak into the finals and lost to the eventual winners. Then from 95 it was just a procession of injuries, Ox, Charles, Jackovich, Tingay, Glenn Lovett and Pike sent packing. Oh what could have been with a little bit of injury luck.

  12. Alongside Robbie - for sheer talent (when not hobbled by injury upon injury) - I hold David Schwartz in absolute awe. He is up there with the greatest 5 players the MFC ever had since WWII.

  13. Thanks for putting this up will watch and remember. for me it is Tulip and The Ox. Best two players I can remember I only remember Barassi playing for the opposing side, Been others that made me go as well, the wizard , Jakovitch and jurrah to name a few, there might even be a couple playing now that might make me watch with pleasure again. Win or lose.

  14. It should be Pert's number 1 goal to negotiate with the AFL to have next year's Queens Birthday and Anzac eve games as our home games next year or else seek compensation. So much of our revenue would be predicated on those two events. To miss out in 2020 because of COVID-19, and have Richmond and Collingwood enjoy the home gate spoils in 2019 and 2021 just can't happen in my book. As for Collingwood in round 2, it may be a great time to play them as they would have lost a lot of momentum from their excellent round 1 performance. On the other hand, we could be 0-2 and holding up the ladder if the Pies are serious and we continue on with GOODW-IN-EFFICIENT football as per 2019 and round 1 2020.

  15. He was a sensation before his 3 knee reconstructions. One of the saddest curses to hit MFC. His eventual return and win in the 1999 B&F plus 2000 grand final was a testament to his determination and talent.

  17. No.47 1973 Round 10 v Geelong at MCG The debut of Robbie Flower. Robbie was only 17 yo when picked as a skinny teenager. The Dees were desperate for a win (were 4 wins 5 losses) and smashed the Cats by 9 goals. Greg Swan kicked 8 goals and John Tilbrook kicked 6 goals. I did not see this game (my first year of going to games was a 6 year old in 1975) but my late father reckoned John Tilbrook was one of the best players that he saw in the red and blue. He must have been very good. Greats like Wells and Alves starred. Robbie’s debut was victorious and he played every game for the rest of the year. It was the start of a very special career for a very special Demon. Melbourne 20.19.139 defeated Geelong 11.15.81

  18. No 50. 1986. Round 14 V Fitzroy. Waverley/VFL Park. 1986 was the start of life after Ron Barassi’s messiah coaching return didn’t bring success. John Northey was appointed ahead of a number of senior experienced candidates. He was not high profile so he’d been dismissed by the Swans. The Dees were 3-10 after 13 rounds and not looking very promising. The winless Saints had easily beaten the Dees in round 12. It was a dark mood around the club. The season was turning downwards and the rumours of merger talks had started to be raised between the Dees & the Lions. Fitzroy were a top 3-4 club and still had several stars in their line up. But Dees started like the top team , belting the Lions kicking 7 goals to nil. The crowd was in awe. The Star was a young strong forward John Fidge, younger brother of Ted Fidge, who kicked 5 goals. The emergence of young Garry Lyon, Steven Stretch and Steve Newport showed the promise of better times. A young Hawthorn reject named Brett Lovett was on debut. Greg Healy stepped up afer his brother Gerard had “desserted” the Dees for Sydney’s $$$$. Brian Wilson “Willo” returned the Brownlow level form and fitness, showing why his prior injuries had hurt the Dees. On a cold June day, it brought some hope to my Demon heart. It was the first talk of mergers and the Dees had stood up to say No Thanks. The team copped some real beltings by over 100 points on several occasions in 1986 but this day was remembered as a plus sign. Melbourne 17.13.115 defeated Fitzroy 11.5.71

  21. the SA Police let them off with a warning but the AFL penalty is yet to be decided. I suspect that it will be financial only but Gil may wish to stamp his authority. Suspension of the coaching staff involved could be the halfway house.

  22. Ahh yes I remember this day well. Watching the Ch7 Feed live, back at The ABC with Alex First We had to cut the Highlights Package for the 7pm News. I think i just put in Jacko’s 11 goals and him getting reported!! Extraodinary day. And then later that night Daicos kicked 12 up in Brisvegas I was filthy. We had been overshadowed again!!

  23. Thanks again that was fantastic to watch. if only we had a couple like him now. those that did not see him play before his recos just would not believe how the ball followed him or how hard he hit packs and the heights he got to flying over players he was “special”. 26. I agree Darkhorse.....the 4 Bluey's helps a bit too. He was not a ruckman but a 6ft 8' ruck rover who changed the landscape for ruckman. Loved Neita but this was an easy one for me......

  29. We had Daryl Baldock signed sealed and delivered until the apple cart spilt over in Tasmania. We also nearly got Darren Jarman but he ended up at Adelaide. Then there was me. I offered my services to MFC but they declined. Player Year Notes Michael Tuck 1991 In his autobiography Garry Lyon says that the Demons made an offer to Tuck after the season that was half considered. Dermott Brereton 1995 With Allen Jakovich finished and David Schwarz out for the season Melbourne showed some interest for 1995 but he was drafted by Collingwood before the Demons could take him. He was still there but they took Shaun Smith instead. Keenan Reynolds 1995 Another potential Schwarz replacement, articles suggested Melbourne thought he'd be gone by the time their pick came. He was available by the Demons didn't select him Darren Gaspar 1996 Linked with the ex-Sydney defender in early 1996 but baulked at his 250k price tag. Daryl Griffin 1996 Melbourne agreed to trade Jeff Hilton to Footscray for Griffin but the deal was vetoed by Footscray's administration. Gavin Brown 1996 It was reported that Melbourne attempted to lure the Collingwood captain at the end of 1996. Stuart Edwards 1996 Trained at the end of the 1996 season but was not drafted. Paul McCormack 1996 Ex-Carlton defender who trained at the end of the 1996 season but was not drafted. Shannon Grant 1997 Linked in mid-1997 Peter Matera hman who was lost to the Demons in a coin-toss with the Bulldogs. Melbourne got Kevin Devine instead. Trent Croad 2001 The Demons were initially named as his most likely destination after leaving Hawthorn, but he eventually went to Fremantle. Brad Flower 2001-2002 Son of Robbie Flower. Played with Eastern Ranges in 2001 and with Sandringham in 2002 with an eye to a father/son selection but was not picked. Barnaby Howarth 2002 22-year-old midfielder from Pennant Hills, NSW. Trained but was not picked up in the rookie draft and joined Sandringham. David Pitt 2001 Springvale player who trained with the club Wayne Carey 2002 Melbourne were one of the club's linked to Carey with CEO John Anderson refusing to rule out a move. Michael Handby 2002 Former Adelaide listed player who trained with the team but was not drafted Chad Davis 2002 Former St Kilda player who trained but was not drafted Danny O'Brien 2002 Ex-Geelong player who trained with the club but was not drafted Jade Rawlings 2003 Met with Melbourne in 2003 trade week with a view to joining as a swap for the #5 selection ultimately used on Brock McLean Ryan Houlihan 2003 Had an offer to join but chose to stay at Carlton. Justin Blumfield 2005 Considered for the spot on the list left open by Troy Broadbridge Kris Barlow 2005 Considered for the spot on the list left open by Troy Broadbridge Brad Sewell 2005 Ryan Ferguson refused a 2005 trade that would have seen him switch to Hawthorn as a swap for Sewell. Went on to win two premierships with the Hawks. Chris Judd 2007 Childhood Melbourne fan who named Melbourne as one of his four potential clubs before choosing Carlton Robert Warnock 2008 Almost lured to the club before choosing Carlton after 2008 . His brother Matthew played for the Demons at the time. Shaun Burgoyne 2009 Named Melbourne as one of his three preferred clubs when he left Port Adelaide. Joined Hawthorn. Luke Ball 2009 Courted by the Demons but nominated Collingwood as his preferred club. Despite some suggestion that Melbourne would use National Draft selection 18 on him, they did not. Mitch Thorp 2009 Former top ten Hawthorn pick who was sacked from the Hawks with a year left on his contracted. Trained with the Demons as a potential key forward but was not selected after failing medical tests. David Hale 2010 Former North Melbourne ruckman linked heavily to the Demons during trade week 2010. Despite the suggestion that Hale would go to either club, he eventually landed at Hawthorn when the Hawks trumped Melbourne's offer. 1998 Agreed to join then changed his mind and stayed at West Coast

  30. I was on the lookout for these books a few years back but couldn't find them anywhere. Our school library used to have them in primary school. I might be able to help with old games, PM your email address and I'll send you my list of games.

  32. No way in hell should we be missing out on spoils for next year from the Queens Birthday and ANZAZ eve. As has been very smugly reported by Tigers and Pies head honchos they are two of the clubs that had there been no season they would've been ok, so clearly we need it more. The worst we should accept is shared spoils from both games next year with us getting the home match the following year.

  39. No.48 2016 Round 20 v Hawks at MCG The Hawks we’re reigning premiers but Roos’ Demons were a rapidly improving side. Roos was to step aside at the end of 2016 but the Dees had a very small sniff of possible finals actions. They only had to win their last 4 games. The Hawks were tested by the Demons earlier in 2016 and had won a tight encounter. So despite the Hawks being a top 3 team again, we felt we were a big chance of an upset. Unfortunately Jesse Hogan was out and Sam Weideman came in for his first game. Another tight affair was evenly balanced at 3/4 qtr time with the Dees in front by a goal. With the demon faithful supporting, the Dees lifted to win by 6 goals. Dom Tyson kicked the sealer and the Dees celebrated. We’d finally beaten the Hawks after years of embarrassing losses. Watts, Gawn and Jack Viney were our stars but backed up by many young players coming through. Hope was rising that very soon the finals drought would end. Melbourne 17.8.110 defeated Hawthorn 11.15.81

  42. No.49. 1982 Round 20 v Pies at Victoria Park. I still remember this game. I was only 15 years old and knew Victoria Park mainly only for horrible losses. The Dees were having a down year still but some promising signs. Brian Wilson had added a lot to the side and Robbie was still our champion. Gerard Healy was spotted into the forward line as a goalkicker alongside Mark “Jacko” Jackson to kick goals. The team was young but still had captain Robbie Flower, Steven Smith, Stephen Icke and Peter Giles. Great players. The Pies we’re heading down after making grand finals for the prior 3 years without success. Still formidable at Victoria Park. The game was a high scoring see saw game until the 3rd quarter. I remember being with my late father who was very excited. He hated the Pies and any win over them was celebrated. 8 goal third quarter had us 5 goals in front. We overran the Pies 16 goals to 6 after half time. Jackson kicked 7 including his amazing battle with Billy Picken. An absolute showman. Tony Elshaug kicked 4 goals and was as smooth and skilled a young rover in the league. Flower, Johnson and Wilson led the midfield. Getting the train to Victoria Park to see the footy was always very scary. But on this day, I was able to celebrate and sing the song on the filthy enemy turf. Melbourne 25.18.168 defeated Collingwood 17.12.114

  43. Not only '88. Had he stayed, he would have been another of the troop playing with Robbie in '87, in that Preliminary Final. And most likely, in the Granny following.

  44. Yes he left us as a 24 year old star. The irony was that Healy left the Dees and could have played in the GF in 88. In fact he won the Brownlow in 88. He was an elite footballer and was sorely missed.
    1 point
  45. He was chasing that sweet, sweet money. In the 1987 semi-final vs The Swans with Melbourne miles in front, Healy won the ball from the centre bounce, ran forward taking two or three bounces and kicked a lovely goal. A voice in the crowd was heard to call out "Come back Gerard, all is forgiven".
