  1. Watched the whole game and it was like watchin the Casey of old last year when they were up and about. The stand outs for me were: Lockhart: Genuinely all round classy game from Lockhart. Attacked the contest with such speed and power and used the footy well. 24 disposals 7 tackles and kicked 1.1.. On current form you would want him playing instead of Spargo. I am intrigued what a full AFL pre season could do for someone like Jay. Lewis: Exactly what you expect from Lewis. Was clean and just marshalled the midfield around the contest with his leadership and experience. Really liked his game. Preuss: Dominated around the ruck and around the ground. I felt at times he missed timed his leap. But that got better as the game wore on. He was a genuine brute today and honestly after watching that performance i would bring him in next week. Not only does he draw defenders and crash packs but also follows up with his 2nd efforts and pressure. Loved big Preussy today. 19 disposal 6 tackles 6 marks 41 hitouts and kicked 1.3 Dunkley: I honestly forgot that he was on our list until they mentioned his name pre game lol. But bloody hell he was very impressive! Plays a lot like his brother Josh when he is in the midfield and cracks in hard. Campbell Brown summed it it up well when he said he just gets in the right spots in the right time. Used the ball well and has a touch of class about him. Each quarter he would start up forward then rotate into the midfield for a 5 to 8 minute burst. Play another game like that and he'll be seeing AFL action very soon. 21 disposals 5 tackles 6 clearences and kicked 3 goals KK: Really loved his game today and really showed out with his composure and class. At one stage he courageously ran into on coming traffic and took a great intercept mark in the middle. The big thing that stood out to me was his workrate. He used his big engine to good use and at one stage he had it out on the back pocket and kicked 40m up the field to a contest and by the time it got there, KK had already pushed himself to help out a teammate and get a handball receive. That would have really excited Goodwin. Wagner: He ia a genuine star at VFL level and today was such a complete performance. Used his speed around the contest and rarely wasted the footy. Going on todays form i just wish he could translate that into AFL level. Special mentions to JKH, Petty and Chandler who all played really well also.

  2. Serious question 'Fork'. I've seen a lot of people talk of unite...what actions do you see he could have done or words he could have spoken to unite? When you see a divided country and your people downtrodden what do you do? what should you do? ....and what was the anti Australian rhetoric he used? This is his Australia day acceptance speech by the way...seems inclusive and uniting to me but maybe I'm not reading it right. “It’s an honour to win an award for doing stuff that you love and that you believe in. For me, I chose that life is all about actions and interactions. I believe that our choices and how we interact with each other creates our relationships and this in turn creates the environment that we live in. Our environment shapes our communities which then shapes the country that we all live in. Growing up as an indigenous Australian I have experienced my fair share of racism. While it has been difficult a lot of the time, it has also taught me a lot and also shaped my values and what I believe in today. I believe racism is a community issue which we all need to address and that’s why racism stops with me. There are always two ways we can look at a situation. We can choose to get angry. Or not. We can choose to help others. Or not. Or choose to be offended. Or not. We can keep our silence or educate ourselves and others about racism and minority populations. It is not just about taking responsibility for your own actions but speaking to your mates when they take out their anger on their loved ones, minority groups or make racist remarks. It means treating people the way you want to be treated, whether that’s your manners, the way you talk to people, whether they are your loved ones or the person serving your dinner. It’s about how you choose to give back and make a difference to those around you, your community or your country that goes outside of just yourself. I believe we are all connected whether we like it or not. We are all equal and the same in so many ways. My hope is that we as a nation can break down the silos between races, break down those stereotypes of minority populations, indigenous populations and all other minority groups. I hope we can be proud of our heritage regardless of the colour of our skin and be proud to be Australian. I’m not here to tell you what to think, or how to act to raise your children. All I’m here to do is tell you about my experiences and hope you choose to be aware of your actions and interactions so that together we can eliminate racism. I’m so grateful for this award and this honour, however the real reward is when everyone is talking to their mates, to their families and their children, having those conversations and educating others about racism. What it looks like, how hurtful and how pointless it is and how we can eliminate it. The ultimate reward is when all Australians see each other as equals and treat each other as equals. To me, everything is about people and the choices we make. I believe it’s the people and the interactions between us that makes this country so special. Thank you so much and have a great Australia Day.”

  4. Pulling my hair out is right. On one thread we laud a young KP player who is sruggling to find his best form for re signing and for the courage to share the impact of criticism on the net. And we have this thread, created purely to tell a young kp player it 'is time to go' and provide a forum for a bunch of anonymous people to pile on and express how [censored] poor they think he is. So yes pulling my hair out because it reminds me he how some still think it is ok to personally attack players behind the cover of a silly avatar and made up name. Despite repeatedly being told by courageous young men like weed of the damage it does. In this context i found this from the weed article powerful and timely and i reckon that some posters on DL might consider thinking about them next time they think about ripping into a player: “I have a lot of respect for our supporters and I do value what they say about me, so to hear and see a few words that didn’t really fall my way and were quite hurtful, it was challenging. “I know that comes with footy and I’ve got to cop it, but I think it was probably best for me to stay away from that.” While supporters ride the highs and lows of footy with their heroes, they can at times let their emotions get the better of them and be oblivious to the impact of their words. “I think there’s a lot of passion coming out in their comments and I don’t think they understand the power it can have on the players and how much effect it can have,” Weideman said.

  5. No, he was booed because he was a blackfella that had an opinion and spoke up about the disgraceful treatment his people had and still do endure from the less enlightened members of society. Those people objected to an "uppity black who didn't know his place". Anyone suggesting it wasn't racially based because other Aborigines weren't booed is missing the point entirely. As if you have to abuse every member of a minority group before it's considered racist behaviour. FFS. When the docos go to air, it's a safe bet that those would benefit most and learn something from watching them will be the least likely to even tune in.

  8. MFC Listed Players (that I can think of) Lockhart - Had a great game. With a little more composure his kicking skills will take him further. Should be at the front of the queue as a depth player. Scope to take his game further. Bradtke - Wasn't expecting much impact but I thought he was incredibly clean with the footy for a big guy. Shot off some nice hand passes and kicking was good for a ruckman. There's no need to judge him on his ruck work (IMO) until he puts on some serious kgs. Lewis - Had a very good game but I suspect his on field coaching was the most value. ANB - Did some nice things but looks comfortable at this level Chandler - Has a crack. Goodwin would love what he brings. Coming along quite well. Not a bad kick. Is he quick enough for a small forward? Bedford - Finding his feet still and had a great goal assist bursting out of the centre in the last quarter. Applied good pressure but will need another year or more to have more impact/consistency. Hard at it. Petty - Reliable in defence. Not too many errors. Lack of speed is a concern but not much got past him. Preuss - Would be happy with his game but he reminds me a little of Gawn in his early years in that he hasn't worked out how to maximise his height and size advantage. Was competitive but has no tank whatsoever. Jordon - Didn't notice him that much. He had a little stint on ball and found a bit of it. Reserving judgement on the young fella. You can see he can kick in spite of a few turnovers. KK - Made a few errors (rusty) but is obviously the go to man for delivering the footy. Found a bit of it in a very outside way. IMO, might need another game or two to pick up the pace and get a bit more contested. Kielty - Smooth mover for a big guy. I'd love to see where his game went if he could impact the game more (more possessions and involvement). Wagner - Another solid game. Looks like this is his level.

  13. It is a complex issue and you are free to remain paralysed by nuance and equivocal in your view. I choose to understand the essence of the Goodes story - that the booing of him had a signficant racist component.

I’m pretty indifferent about the whole debate to be honest but your posting about this topic irks me, particularly the condescending comments such as ‘knuckle draggers’ and people with ‘low intelligence’ and ‘limited education’. It’s classic left wing attack dog behaviour. You should take a second to stop and recognise the irony of your approach here.

  16. Unfortunately yes, the booing of Goodes expanded to a level I've never witnessed in any other game for any other player. Not even single occasions, after some particularly ugly early incident in a game where a player was booed for the rest of the game. I have literally never heard the kind of booing that Goodes received. It was the calling the girl out, it was the dance, it was that he didn't back down on it when the nuff-nuff army demanded it. Ugh, I'm still recalling the sick feeling up at a Sydney game, when the Hawthorn portion of the crowd ramped it up. The ball was out of play, nothing was happening, people where I was were looking around and up at the replay trying to figure out if there had been a trip or someone had been thrown into the fence. Nope, just Goodes, not even involved in the play, happened to be standing near a segment of Hawthorn reserved seating. There was a tangible sadness across the rest of the crowd (including, maybe especially, many other Hawthorn supporters) as they realised what was happening. It actually sucked a lot of life out of the crowd atmosphere for a while. Not like any other booing I've ever witnessed. Acknowleging that more than a few people out there in the poltiical world have run off with this to use it as leverage, I'll try to run through my own thoughts in the spirit of honest engagement and all that. Other indigenous players generally weren't booed or abused (well, less so since the late 90s at least) because they weren't being, shall we say, 'uppity'. There's a pretty obvious unwritten code that you'll be welcome as long as you keep within the nicey-nicey political correctness realms. Think 'theme round' and special guernsey designs. That 'keep it nice' issues kind of answers the next question, about Goodes fanning the flames. No doubt it did increase the sense of confrontation, even if it was wildly overblown by the people so 'offended' by it, but I suppose the question Goodes might ask is 'why am I expected to have to worry about fanning such a stupid flame?'. Bizarrely, I think Goodes found himself in the bind that mostly people with quite opposite views find themselves in; you say or do something a little controversial to begin with, the twitter storm erupts out of all proportion, everyone starts volunteering any excuse they can to heap more confected shame upon you, and if you don't back down then you officially become the worst person in the world. As for 'how racist is Australia really'... definitely not as racist as many like to claim, definitely more racist than others like to claim. Thinking hard here... hmmm... on the one hand, Australia has made such tremendous progress on racial and cultural issues in just a couple of generations, and could make a realistic claim to being the world's least racist nation overall. Trouble is, that isn't a smooth result and there are still many filthy horribly racist corners, and there are still some really obvious racial glass ceilings. But because it tends to happen in one organisation at a time or one group of bastards at the end of the street at a time, it has very low visibility anywhere else. One way to put it - it is no longer 'normal' to be racist in Australia, but, for Aboriginal people, it is still very 'normal' to come up against really horrible racism in both personal and professional life, and to be left on your own to deal with it. So then Goodes comes out and says 'racist' - the backlash comes from not only the grubby core of actual racists (and society's layer of people who just like to hurl abuse at anyone they can find an excuse to), but also a share of the people who are proud of their own improvement and their country's improvement and don't appreciate being told that colelctively they still suck. For Goodes, the personal experience is one of having society tell him he hasn't experience the racism which he most definitely has, and then Goodes gets publicly abused and ostracised for the very act of saying what he is experiencing. For the rest of the Aboriginal community, they see that happening and are reminded that society will deny the racism that does exist, and punish them for mentioning it. Anyway, I quite agree that the documentary is unlikely to hit all these nuances, but at least it might help more people realise the normality of experiencing racism, even in an ostensibly not racist society. As you say, the mea cuplas from Gil the Dill and the like do nothing - in fact they even reaffirm the starting position 'oh yes, we have totally learnt and wont be like that again, for real, I don't invite racists to any of my dinner parties'. And this pathetic 'leadership' takes us back to this easy, cosy pattern of he comforting, plausible, not-racist image of Australia, which has still not come to terms with the idea that experiencing racism is still quite normal for Aboriginal people. You could say, Australia is not a racist society, but it is a society where the remaining racists can often expect to act our their noxious attitude without being penalised, and where the lifelong victims of racism feel that if they speak up about it they will be penalised. And that is pretty much the heart of why Goodes felt so alienated at the end of his career. And why the AFL should be so ashamed that they failed this simple test of solidarity, even as they kept decorating their brand with Indigenous-themed confetti.

  17. Yesterday the AFL released an Apology to Adam Goodes for not standing by him. For the final years of Goodes' decorated career they receded into the background and did nothing while he was being vilified by crowds at games and by 'personalities' in the media and effectively hounded out of the game. The AFL has had 4 years to apologise but has not. This week two docos are released on Goodes last years in the game. They are docos in which the AFL and some key people in the industry, by their own actions and words are complicit in and added to the trauma Goodes endured. I haven't seen the docos so can't comment on them. But I will say they AFL should be supremely embarrassed that it has taken 4 years to apologise. Its hard to think there is much sincerity let alone contrition in the apology and its timing suggests it is to preempt the docos tarnishing of its 'reputation' and divert attention from the docos. The AFL are controlling 'the optics' as usual!! Whatever one thinks of Goodes or how he played the game its hard to accept how he was neglected by the AFL and those it can influence. I find the belated apology shallow and opportunistic. I would have applauded the apology had it been made when Goodes retired. Not saying the AFL should be the moral flag bearers of our society. But it should stand up and be counted when it comes to any of its players let alone one of its champions. How does the saying go: the standards we walk past are the standards we accept. Now, the apology is, imv too little, too late.

  19. Having some relatives killed fighting wars and even being decapitated as Fork'em states to proudly show how he got over it so easily, is completely different than having your family wiped out in a genocidal event or your land stolen. It takes a little longer to get over it, especially if the oppression continues affecting the survivors for 200 years. I suspect there is a lack of empathy amongst many who take the positions of some frequent posters here - they just can't imagine what it is like. They have always been in the 'in group' and never in a marginalised group like some of us. But nothing anyone says will change their minds.

  24. I'm consulting on a project for the ABC about millennial mental health and the importance of talking about your mental health. Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness and it makes other humans relate to us better. It's how I form many relationships and it's how I run productions. We all have occasionally difficult times at work. Every human does. Footy players are no different. Those that play must have a passion and love for it, but it doesn't mean each and every player wouldn't go through difficult spells with their mental health. I hope Sam has the physical and mental tools to make it, but Sam being open about his mental health should not play into this conversation IMO. Doesn't mean he'll make it, but doesn't mean he won't either.

  27. I don't think Goodes was only focusing on what happened over 200 years ago. He and his people have endured disadvantage and subtle or overt racism in their every day lives. Wasn't Eddie Betts targeted by trolls only recently this year? Some things haven't changed for indigenous people, no matter how much the rest of society would like to think it doesn't happen. We cannot keep denying other people's reality simply because we haven't experienced it, or witnessed it ourselves.

  29. A lovely day at Casey beginning with a hot egg and bacon roll after joining a very long gate queue filled with Magpie supporters. Very little red and blue by comparison to the ubiquitous jail stripes. Luckily the score board kept the Pies supporters very quiet. A stiff breeze across the ground made precision football difficult. I think Casey could have won by 100 points without the wind such was the dominance. I'm afraid the numbers stumped me from a player reporting viewpoint but I was impressed with KK's first half. Definitely something there. Preuss marked and rucked strongly and could perhaps have had a couple more goals. Hard to judge the result as the Pies were in the main woeful... which was of course pleasant in itself. Looking forward to the next day out with Casey.. but hell it was getting cold at the end !!

  32. No. Nor my parents, grandparents, great grandparents or great great grandparents as far as I know. Maybe if I trace my roots back to 1600’s Scotland I could find an instance where a genetic family member withstood an incursion by English soldiers of King James XI. I don’t know however and I really don’t care. I choose to accept the reality of the conditions I meet today and play the hand I was dealt with. Believe it or not there are other non-indigenous people out there who face struggles in life. No group is special in experiencing the sufferings of existence. And I’m guessing you the individual have never been invaded or had ‘your land’ declared terra nullius, either. Unless you are a 230yo indigenous yogi living in a secret cave under Uluru.

  33. For those who do not recognise Lily's name: The Mithen name is MFC Royalty. mithen-name-lives-on-at-melbourne Her grandfather’s cousin is Laurie Mithen – a Melbourne great: won back-to-back Melbourne best and fairest awards in 1958-59 was a 5 time premiership player in 1955-56-57 and 1959-60. played 153 games from 1954-62 topped Melbourne’s goal kicking in 1962 named in the club’s team of the century. I believe she lived/s in the Geelong area. As another post said she had the chance to join their inaugural AFLW team but turned them down to stay with the Dees. That is loyalty. Criticising Lily for going to the football with her Geelong following friends/family is churlish. Didn't Nathan Jones go to the last Swans grand final to barrack for his brother's Swans? He certainly wasn't their to barrack for the Bulldogs!!

  35. I think it is time to put that 'folklore' to bed. Without checking exact dates, in 2018 key injuriy outs were: Tom Mc out for most of the first half of the season, Viney out for 2/3 of the season, AVB out for 3/4 of the season, Lever for all of the second half, Hogan out on and off. KK and May weren't on our list so they are 'virtual' outs in 2018 when compared to this year's 'missing' players. Undoubtedly, injuries and interrupted preseasons have have hurt us this year. But I believe that card has been overplayed and a review of 2018 injuries/outs shows it was also a bad year. Certainly the 2019 injuries/preseason have caused us to lose games but it alone cannot be the reason we have lost so many and why we have an appalling %age. And, our game plan is no longer the same as last year. The 'brand' Goodwin talks about is still contested footy and still manic/chaos but our structures changed from a attack to defence focus after the St Kilda game when to quote Goodwin: we are too easy to score against. In the next, Richmond game we went all out defence to stop the bleeding ala Roos style when he first arrived. Since then we have been refining that defence focused game. If we believe that all our 2019 woes are solely because of a poor preseason/injuries we run the risk of papering over other issues that lie beneath.

  40. https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/king-conservatives-hated-uppity-[censored]-golfing-president-article-1.3065230 The real ,reason why Adam Goodes was booed is contained in the attached article. Australian footy supporters are happy to be amazed by the skills that our indigenous players have displayed for decades. However, God help these players if they are prepared to express an opinion or behave in a manor that is contrary to how “white Australians” see them and their place in our society.lets be honest here, there is a sizeable segment of the Australian population who don’t like “uppity black fellas” And that my friends is why they booed Adam Goodes, and it is pathetic.

  46. So why did Goodes get named Australian of the Year again? Was it because he actually did something worthy of the honour or that he was just a prominent aboriginal at the time? He first got boo'd for his cheap shots on the field that the AFL often let him off for. Then he won AOTY and instead of using the honour to unite he chose to use the platform to deliver divisive anti australian rhetoric during some of his speeches. This made many of the population who couldn't care less what colour you are didn't like the direction he took which is when the booing ramped up. He then thought it a bright idea to run brandishing an imaginary spear at a small pocket of Carlton supporters at the SCG on prime time TV which is when all hell broke loose. And he wonders why. Now as they tend to do these days, all the holier than thou virtue signallers are out in force squealing racists.

  48. Exactly. Generally the afl community loves the indigenous players while they weave their magic on the field, but get political like Adam Goodes did on receiving Australian of the year putting voice to the unfortunate truth of inherent racism in Australian society, and he is rising above his station. He made that award a platform for highlighting the plight , the miserable reality for much of the indigenous population of Australia, much like Rosie batty did for domestic violence. Courageous, both of them. im not indigenous, but the reason the booing was happening in those years, particularly at hawthorn and west Coast games, to me was blatantly obvious. I heard Patrick Dangerfield on 3aw today, saying that the docos helped the afl understand the experience of Goodes. Oh please. The afl community led by gill McLaughlin, was weak and gutless in their response at the time. Pathetic and leader-less. Embarrassing
