  1. Your not wrong. They stuffed up big time last year and many of us QLanders (most ex Vics) voiced our dissatisfaction to the club. 3 Generations of this family will be there Saturday.

  3. Obviously you either haven’t seen the plans or know how to read drawings! I have seen the drawings (and as an architect I know how to read them)! The footprint of the proposal neither extends into Yarra Park nor eliminates the playgrounds. Further, it is of a lower height than the Pullman Hotel and residential and commercial buildings on the opposite side of Wellington Parade. Nor does it “tower over” the street as, being on the South side, it casts no shadow and is lower than a fully-grown plane tree! Frankly, your comments are an embarrassment to the educated readership of Demonland! ?

  5. I do not know any top sportsmen or women that have not made sacrifices. Often the thing that delineates the best is that they have been single-minded in their pursuit to be the best they can be. And the critical component of that success is that they have made sacrifices whether it be in lifestyle choices, friends or even family. Eliminating risk taking behaviours is an important part of that equation. However, the evaluation of risk taking is a value judgement based on the individuals skills, competence and experience. If you have been doing something all your life, it may not be seen as as risk taking (eg snow skiing or water skiing). Michael Schumaker went skiing because he loved it and had being doing it all his life. He was an accomplished skier. For me, skiing down a black run is much riskier than for an experienced skier.Driving a car is another example. Its the biggest risk of all, yet most people do it every day without thinking. Its second nature. Yet people die or incur injury. Ollie Wines is an accomplished water skier but I would suggest that skiing on a log infested river is riskier than on open water. It requires thought, evaluation and assessment. It means different things for different people. It is in the grey zone not the black and white. It also involves an evaluation by the individual as to the importance of the end goal, in this case Ollies footy.

  6. This classic games rubbish has gone too far. Now they’re showing the most lacklustre of games between Richmond and Essendon’s VFL side in 2016, where the Tigers got up by a memorable 20 points. And yet they haven’t bothered all summer to show our memorable rd 22 win over West Coast, which was deemed by the media to be one of the best games of recent years.

  7. It's time the racing authorities put a stop to races being monopolised and a cap on the amount of horses that any trainer can have. 150 is enough but I reckon even 100 is plentiful. But this new saga might bring things to a head anyway ... fairly sure that a country in Europe (France?) allows trainers to only have 1 horse in any given race. It might be 2. And a horse like 'The Autumn Sun' should be racing against Winx. The finger can't be pointed at just 1 trainer. There's a lot to clean up DZ.

  9. The old “suicide grip”. Has its pros and cons. Never done without a spotter though which Preuss fortunately has. I’m looking forward to being at Maroochydore on Saturday morning to watch the guys go through their paces and having a chat with a few afterwards. Always a good day for us Queensland supporters.

  10. Poor old Demon supporters! Foxtel have been showing selected "classic" matches since the early 80's. Apparently we haven't been in ANY of them. I know we were pathetic in most of the 80s, and 2007-2017, BUT.....we had some pretty good teams in the other years, and had some great matches. I wonder if Foxtel take into account the likely audience, so that Richmond, Coll, Essendon etc get priority. Has anyone else noticed how rarely we're on?

Didn't follow the games as I was very busy today so that's going to have to be the pattern from now on. (for luck) I officially like the 3pick!

  16. As there was for the Grand Prix and as there invariably is for just about anything these days. It's the genius of the Tigers Indigenous centre. The people of East Melbourne/Richmond/wherever can't complain that they were widening their footprint on Yarra Park's anglo saxon so called sacred ground if the traditional owners have approved it on what they consider their own actual sacred ground. Checkmate greenies.

As for legal practice they cannot engage in activities stipulated in their work contract deemed as potentially dangerous or unsociable and must gain permission to do some activities as stipulated in their contract. They cannot divulge trade secret, sensitive, private information about their employees. No they cannot do what they want in their own time.

  20. And Deemania you would remember that like many of his team mates from the great years, Tassie was as tough as nails. Those great Demon teams were tough but fair and were led by the toughest of all, RD Barassi. No-one picked a fight with Tassie. He would stand toe to toe with his opponent never giving an inch, with his big fist knocking the ball out of the forwards grasping hands. It was said that he had the respect of one of the best and toughest full forwards in John Peck. With his brushed back black brylcreemed hair and rugged looks, he looked like a film star in his sleeveless number 8 guernsey.

  23. What a mess! Seems like dd above was on the money, ongoing investigations for a while from what I have read. It makes me feel for the smaller trainers even more now, the ones that do the right thing and yet they are forced to quit the game or move their base to some location you’ve never heard of just to maintain the business most likely unsuccessfully as well. When I say small I mean a trainer that has a handful of horses in a stable. How can you compete with a trainer that has up to 4-5 horses in a race sometimes? I remember trainers getting sick of Waller in Sydney a couple of years ago, it was like spot the non-Waller horse in the field. Here’s a question i heard on the radio. How many punters say at Mornington today would have thought twice about having a bet? Not many probably is my guess. It would be great if they cleaned all this out, but how do you do that? There’s corruption in just about every sport and banning wagering like I heard on the radio today won’t fix the problem.

  24. A small stable could conceal those types of activities Wadda ... in a small stable the numbers knowing what is going on might number 2 or 3 people only. But in a super-huge stable and with so many people about, the info can get out. He may well be a victim of his own success as well (as you've indicated) The shot over the starboard bow might have been when 'Trap for Fools' was denied a run in the Cox Plate. Maybe RV was trying to send a message? And the 'Tasers/Treadmill/Blinkers/Pin' operation can be connected to the 'Deception/Financial Gain' outcome. Or there might be more to this story (I suspect there is more)

  25. No way that will happen. The Lions have been training in crap facilities for years, Live up here and even where we are training in Maroochy is better than what Lions have. Also more seats in balance up here for election so that's where the money will be spent even though would love a facility for whole club in Melb.

  28. I'm sure that early career schoolyard injury didn't help, but I'm pretty sure it's not the reason Blease never became the AFL player the equal of his athletic ability. As far as I can make out, the biggest injury impact on Patracca's career to date was when he tore his second ACL at training during his first preseason (. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/melbourne/melbournes-no-2-draft-pick-christian-petracca-tears-anterior-cruciate-ligament-at-demons-training/news-story/00dab6be48b7f26bc8ea59b8817f9d72) It wouldn't have helped loosing a season of onfeild development, but similarly, don't think that has nessasrily been the key limitation on his development as a player. Honestly my assessment is that the occurrences of an off the ground injury significantly negatively impacting an AFL players career are pretty rare. If they are a good enough player an isolated incident just becomes a footnote in their career bio. By far the biggest injury exposure these guys face is playing and training. Sure these guys earn good money, but they are not the club's property. To restrict them to everything under the sun that might remotely cause them an injury would be completely draconian and robbing these guys of the opportunity to live life during their youth/prime. Let's face it these guy's already sacrifice a fair bit compared to the average individual to get where they have got. As others have pointed out, most players will be self regulating with regards this kind of thing and in instances where they are not, the the club, team mates and it's leadership have a role to educate them and inform them of the consequences. It's only habitual repeat offenders that are really a problem for which there are natural consequences and I think most players are smart enough to work that out.

  36. And that could leave his wingman opponent standing on his own with a chance to receive the ball unopposed from a quick clearance from the bounce down. No effect on the game? There are far too many variables involved for that to be true. I would suggest there's more likely a 99% chance that the new 666 rule will have an effect on the game in some form or another. Whatever that is, is anyone's guess. The remaining 99.9% of the game is an incorrect number too ... more like 80% - 90% of the game as the 666 rule will be applied roughly 25 - 45 times per game depending on how many goals are scored. And each application of the 666 rule will take up a certain amount of game time. Applying the 666 rule for the whole game is problematic. There may be a way to do it but any solution I've seen put forward becomes impractical. If the goal is to reduce congestion on the ground then bringing the numbers down to 15 or 16 per team could be a viable alternative. But then we'd be messing with the very fabric of the game.

  40. I really can't see what the big problem is with these NIMBYS, etc, being against such a development. The building would be over the rail line (virtually empty/useless space). Will it rob them of their precious views of trains going by? Secondly, the oval. It would provide a flat bit of land making the area even more accessible and community friendly. It all sounds like people who want to have the best, but not let others have it. The age of self-entitlement really has known no greater time.

  41. If the oval is not fenced off and it is improved by being flattened and resown, then it is hard to see what legitimate gripe the residents group can have. How many of those complaining currently use the oval area and for how many hours in a day? If it is only that the club will use it for a few hours a week, then that is a nonsense, as these parks are there to be used. If the real gripe is about the building, then it must be noted that it is being planned to be built over an ugly railway line and that fits within planning guidelines, that deal with improving areas and widening their use. A modern mixed use building will be of more use to the community as a whole, than the airspace over a railway line. As well as club facilities, their could be cafes, shops and community offices etc, which would enhance the use of the now vacant area. Further, If the building was owned by the Government and paid for by it, we could lease/buy back over a period and end up with a revenue stream and it would be very difficult for a marginalized group to stop it going ahead.

  42. Agree with the above and whilst I think local residents views both for and against are important, I've been thinking that one thing that certainly shouldn't be discounted are the view of us MFC supporters as well. As MFC supporters, we are still part of the comunity and pretty important stakeholders regardless of living in the city council/local area or not. Even though I now live interstate, I still feel a real affiliation for the MFC and Yarra Park area and really don't like 'Plan B' options anywhere near as much, because let's face it, they are further from our home the mighty G, further from the range of public transport options and generally inferior. ...and their are over 40,000 MFC members + more non member supporters. This precinct doesn't just belong to the local residents, there is a degree to which it belongs to all of us. I don't want to go as far as saying that the MFC has some kind of 'native title' to this area, because there is nothing like that level of cultural/spiritual equivalence. However, I do also think that the MFC has a significant historical association with this location and that shouldn't count for nothing either when it comes to planning approval considerations.

  44. At last nights AGM there were a number of questions on this subject. Bartlett and Pert consistently held the line that Yarra park was achievable and they were pressing on. When the subject of other options was raised they quickly moved the conversation back to Yarra park. Too costly or too far away seemed to be the comment about other options. IMO they see yarra park as easily the best option if they have a plan b they were not going to give it air last night. Again it is only my opinion but they are locked into a Near MCG option and nothing else is on the radar. They could of course be using this to get better support for option b we will all just have to wait and see.

  45. Interesting question but I hope they don't. Fishermen's Bend is rather soulless with zilch public transport. At Burnley, there is open space at the freeway end of Swan Street: Burnley Park bordered by Yarra Blvd which has an oval of sorts. And, The Bicentenial Park (not sure how big it is). Burnley station and Swan St tram are the only public transport options. Interestingly, there is a lot of space behind the Burnley Gardens campus (owned by Melb Uni). But that land effectively is Tiger territory as it is dominated by the Kevin Bartlett Reserve and Kevin Bartlet Sporting Complex (which the State Gov't recently promised nearly $.5mill to build a new pavillion). The precinct has two football ovals and is home to a range of sports including Richmond and Collingwood soccer clubs. Both AFL clubs are expanding their sports so I wouldn't be surprised if one or both have their eye on expanding into the aforementioned Burnley Park across the road. So I reckon we are too late to join the Burnley party! As Pert previously noted the importance of giving supporters a place to go before and after games neither F'Bend nor Burnely fit that bill. I get a sense we will push hard for Yarra Park.

  46. Good point re giving residents direct access from Wellington Pde. Re last para. My recollection is that buildings were 'proposed' for the airspace over the railway line rather than in the park. If they build in the airspace they can keep the protective fence and give East Melb residents, the general public, MCG attendees etc direct access to Yarra Park via a 'ground level mall' type of set up. If I get really creative I can visualise that 'mall' as a retail and/or cafe area...

  47. Based on this article Yarra Park is the one we will go hardest for Not a Pipe Dream It looks like we aim to generate a groundswell of community support (and thereby drown out the 'not-in-my-backyard' type objections of the Residents Group). Pert said: "Quite a few of the community groups and individuals are really excited by the possibilities. What they're saying is that this is an area where there's no flat ground." Amassing support of the broader community is a good strategy: get the numbers on-side and implicitly isolate the Residents Group. In that article there is a steely resolve by Bartlett and Pert that we will make it happen.

  49. Yarra Park hosted a music festival on Saturday called Petting Zoo. Typical drugged up singlet wearing idiots dancing in a big heap of mud to EDM. The idea that it's always a public park full of peaceful trees and people walking dogs is pretty false. It's a public space best used for public activities. A sporting oval available for the public would help a lot of those activities.
