Also 9th contested marks. 1st in least opponent kicks 4th in least opponent disposals 12th for clangers Summary: I think for the most part the early statistics are bearing out what we're seeing with our eyes - inefficiency. But perhaps the frustration of this inefficiency is blinding us a fraction to our absolute dominance in a couple of areas, namely the contested battle and sheer volume of ball moving forward. We're also perhaps the one mobile clearance specialist short to really step it up (JV). The stats are however fairly similar to the early part of last year. But there's some subtle differences re. the nature of disposals for and against. We're kicking more and being kicked and tackled against less - areas which should help with endurance. We're also (to my surprise) not getting completely completely hammered in the marking and are a bit cleaner in our disposal. Basically, we're playing contested footy, but also shutting down space and forcing the opposition to do the same. Together, it all bodes super-well if we can clean up just a fraction up front or get a smidgen tighter down back - the latter which we should be able to do considering we have three AA-level defenders currently out of form or learning to gel (as well as a potential top-line rebounder in Hunt), while as to the former we're still fiddling with in the unexpected absence of Tomald. Lastly, it's just three rounds, and we've played two likely bottom-four teams - but I think we tend to play as well or as poorly despite the opposition and that most of these stats will hold. We didn't scrape by, we won by 37 points. After that initial 4 goal run we outscored them by 10 goals. I'm not saying everything's peachy but some of the negativity on here is crazy.

Rode my bike past Gosch’s this morning expecting they would be training. No training wasn’t on for the team but noticed the rehab group was in action over on the Punt Road side of the oval. Viney, TMac and AVB under the watchful eye of Crossy and several other assistant coaches/physio’s. Tom and Jack were doing repeated timed 20 meter sprints but we’re actually running at least 100 metres if that makes sense. They were running about 100m but only being timed between 2 cones about 20m apart I guess as Tom was registering a consistent 4.2 sec as yelled out by the timer on each run, Jack was somewhat slower. AVB was doing a lot of agility work, silly walks, running on the spot, not much with the ball. I wandered over to look at the Rebels in training which was very entertaining, they got smashed on the weekend in the second half and I think the coach told the players to bring their mouth guards as they were doing a match simulation with two teams and it was full on stuff. Big boys hitting each other hard but they don’t look fit compared to AFL players but then the game is not about endurance but short, explosive play and battering ram stuff. I kept an eye on the rehab group and Tom and Jack were kicking short balls at each other, then doing a lot of leading and long kicking to Crossy and each other. Later they were doing goal kicking practice. When I left the boys were again running sprints with Crossy. AVB had left for AAMI by then with no ball use, I think he is a long way off although he looks to be in no way hindered in his movements. But that is the same for Jack and Tom they looked fine and unhindered on their movements so it must be so frustrating having these types of injuries!

It’s funny how we’re always the subject of these articles. Yes while we’re guilty of it, most teams across the weekend conceded a barrage of goals in quick time. Teams can’t and don’t play at 100% for 120 minutes, so it’s about minimizing the damage when you’re not at 100%. We were better at it this week

Hogan is a brute of a forward who, unlike his contemporaries at St Kilda, can impose his will on a game. In 2012, Hogan was named the All-Australian under-18 centre half back, while he was not yet old enough to be eligible for the draft. Taken from the Latin for “portent” prodigy, for centuries, had been equated with monster, and that is what Hogan is fast becoming if he is not there already. His work rate has lifted (to the point you could argue that his best work now is done outside the 50 – he was credited with five inside 50s on Saturday) and the poor body language that plagued his early years has gone.

i actually think it is a good sign that we are the #1 scoring side and should have been up 3 zip when you consider 1. we are still making a lot of mistakes 2. we have a number of players who are playing below their best or average 3. no tmac or jv when we get our shlt together we will be awesome. better to know there is a lot of room for improvement than to think we are playing out of our skin and what you see will be as good as it gets

CASEY DEMONS KEEP ON TRUCKING by KC from Casey The 2018 VFL premiership season campaign opened up on a bright note for the Casey Demons when they demolished the stand-alone Coburg Lions on their home turf at Piranha Park yesterday. The plucky Lions were out of the blocks early with the opening goal of the game, but in an omen of what was to come, Sam Weideman crunched his way through a pack, gave the ball off to former Docker Harley Balic who leveled the scores. The pair would each kick another five goals in their team’s massive first up win and, of course, they put their hands up for higher selection in the near future. Weideman, who had ankle surgery over the off season, was in exquisite form both in front of goal (he had four goals at the main break) and helping out in the ruck. Balic appears to have left the homesick blues behind him and was right at home in his first official game back in Melbourne. By quarter time, Casey held a 20 point lead and, while Coburg maintained its resistance against a strong defence led by Declan Keilty, Mitch White and young Adelaide recruit Harry Petty, it cracked in the latter half of the term as the likes of Corey Maynard, Mitch Hannan and Jayden Hunt were lively around the ball. By half time, the Casey lead had stretched out to 55 points. The Demons would have been pleased with the performances of their younger guns in Petty, Oskar Baker and Charlie Spargo although the latter’s name ended up in the umpire’s notebook after an indiscretion in the opening term. Some observers might have been scratching their heads when Melbourne drafted the 197cm Norwood, SA key defender Petty in light of their depth in that part of the ground particularly after recruiting All Australian Jake Lever, but the youngster was all coolness and class in his debut at this level and promises big things in the future. Baker is a pacy jack-in-a-box who needs to work on his awareness as he backs himself with his run, but will excite when he gets his chances at a higher level. Spargo, who kicked two goals for the game, might lack in height but has all of the skills and will also be worth watching as he develops through the season. The procession continued after the main break with Angus Brayshaw overcoming a heavy tag and demonstrating his quality. Cam Pedersen was in awesome form with his marking and strong play setting up attacking opportunities for Balic, Jay Kennedy Harris and Hannan as the Demons strolled to the easiest of wins. VFL-lister Angus Scott worked hard for his two goals from limited opportunities and North Launceston recruit Jay Lockhart was steady on debut pushing forward for a goal in the third quarter. The other excitement for spectators was the sight of the Casey Radio truck bogged in a ditch at the ground before the game which effectively curtailed transmission for the day. Fortunately, it didn’t prevent the team from trucking away to a 107 point victory. It was difficult to assess the full impact of Casey’s win because of the opposition’s lack of high calibre players. The visitors had 18 AFL listed players plus two others with previous experience at the highest level and their dominance was inevitable. They are way from home again next week as they travel to Werribee on Saturday night to play against another stand alone team although the Tigers gave Geelong VFL a fright in their opening round game. Has anyone complaining about lapses actually watched any footy other than Melbourne games this year? Just curious because I've seen a few and haven't seen a single game where teams didn't have fits and spurts.

The 2 big boys in Oscar and Frost have their limitations and Lever has made plenty of mistakes but it's the midfield pressure that still worries me the most. Oscar is not quick and especially a bit heavy footed when he has to make a few repeat efforts but he plays a huge time on ground so that will happen. He's still young enough to get stronger and a little fitter and that combination will mean less fatigue. Frost is going to make anywhere between 1 and 10 dumb mistakes a game but his effort is great and his pace fixes some of them up. Lever's kicking should be good not great. That's ok. His handballing should be very good and he can use his left and dance through defenders as well. His narrow base with his feet leaves him off balance one on one or over the ball and that's something I hope coaches have picked up on but didn't seem to have done in preseason. What he does have is really nice ability to close on the ball by reading the play and that should pick up. All of the positives and negatives of the talls can be exposed when the players up the field aren't slowing the opposition down and hemming them in to the boundary and slow long kicks. Viney is the big loss in midfield pressure. Oliver, Petracca and Salem are only young to the midfield and building tanks and those first 2 really hunt the ball. Salem is important because he can sit off and be attacking or defending. Jones will probably always be a ball player first, hard to change that and for that reason I hope he goes to half forward or an attacking half back rather than the wing but we aren't there in the midfield yet. My biggest concern is the wings where Lewis just doesn't have the pace any more or truly elite endurance to stick with outside runners. Neither does Tyson. The extra ball winners on the wing gives us an edge around the contest but it costs us in transition. Personally I think we can use Oliver, Petracca, Jones and Salem now and hopefully Viney to win more than our share of inside ball and get some great outside runners to take advantage of that inside wins by spreading hard in attack and defending. But right now the list isn't quite balanced and the midfield seems easy to expose. Billy Hartung running free led to North's clean inside 50's and goals in the first quarter on the weekend. If we don't find a match up for Isaac Smith and similar level players in the comp then we'll get chopped up in the midfield and the backline will get exposed.

The commentators were too busy raving about Majak Daw to wet themselves over a Melbourne player.

Brayshaw named first in official club bests.....A good sign they are seeing the right actions...hopefully not too far away.

While I left the ground having had a bit of a reality check, I'm confident we'll be playing better footy in 5-6 weeks. No teams are playing their best right now. None. Geelong, Port, Sydney, West Coast, GWS have all had "lapses". If we hadn't had a single lapse it would have been pretty extraordinary. The lapses aren't a massive issue for me, as I'm confident they'll go or be diminished when we're playing better footy. It's more our defensive structures and ball movement that I'm concerned about. I'll let Steve worry about the odd "lapse".

At Casey last year Fritsch averaged 12 disposals and two goals per game. He's not going to do better than that in his first year of AFL. He was robbed of his 12th disposal and second goal by an infuriating umpire decision. He's playing his role and I'll be surprised if he doesn't close to every game depending on soreness.

A few blow outs in the VFL. We are currently 3rd behind the Pies and Bombers. Werribee will be a bigger test they almost beat Geelong. I'm going to the game so I'll give a report.

Can’t really add to the reports above in regards to the regulars but I was keen to see some of the new boys and here are some observations. Balic: Doesn’t look like the smoothest of movers but put himself in the right spots most of the time. His mark in the last was a beauty and his game today was basically telling Goody “ Look at me coach, look at me”. Spargo: Not much of him but was involved a lot in general play. Nice user of the ball, showed football smarts and seemed to have a decent tank on him. Baker: Has an instinct of just going as soon as he gets the ball but can develop into a more than useful outside runner. Started to lower his eyes as the game went on. Petty: The pick of the bunch from what I saw today. As stated previously, the defence didn’t need to do a lot but two passages of play stood out. He beat an opponent in an aerial one on one by bringing the ball to ground, followed up and with surprising speed left his opponent for dead and hit a teammate on the chest 40 metres down the field with his left foot. In another marking contest with several players contesting, he spoiled the ball, split the pack and was the only one standing. Picked up the ball and hit JKH on the chest again down the field without breaking stride. There’s just something to like about this kid. Great balance and very composed. A lot of things don’t get noticed on the footy field but I liked what I saw and heard from the Weid. There were little spotfires in the 4th quarter in the centre square and King wanted to wrestle a Coburg player through the turf. Weid yelled out from inside our 50 to King to cut the crap and go contest the ball-up. I enjoyed that.

I’m still yet to see a team this year really put in a four quarter effort (and completely dominate a game , maybe barring Adelaide over the aints and rd 1/2 against the dogs) I think we still aren’t grasping the fact that this competition is as tight as has ever been, there are no easy wins against bottom sides, games will be subject to reverse momentum swings all the time, sides will hit back (often assisted by umpire momentum) this is not the same competition 10 years or so ago where a top 4 team would routinely spank bottom 4 sides by 12+ goals yes agree these quarter lapses are something we need to react to much better and to slow down opposition momentum, but for us to consistently expect 4 quarter dominations as being conducive to being a top 4 side , IMO is being slightly unrealistic. We need to win ugly those games when we’re not 100% on where previously we would have lost, and then we need those handful of games where we smash an opponent, we didn’t do the latter last year and % cost us .

If he was not BOG he was very close dc. His marking is amazing when he is on song one grab clunk all over. On top of that he was all over the ground no lack of running etc. now admittedly the opposition was not great but he is too good for VFL.

Danny Frawley is physically painful to listen to.

I just watched the replay. Jeez Petracca was bloody good, his leg and core strength is amazing, he just can’t be taken to the ground. I’m not big on comparing players but he reminds me of Dusty, just with better hair and handsome.

I can’t remember if it was on a demonland podcast or sen but I heard our head recruiter say they factor in list management with their picks and given our stocks of similar type players to Petty he really wasn’t a requirement but we rated him as a “jet” so jumped at him when available where we got him.

How bloody good was Clarry's first goal. Running towards an awkwardly bouncing ball with his opponent right behind, having to change stride and pace to take clean possession of the ball, the acceleration away from the opponent and then the kick around the body at full pace straight through the goals. If Danger or Dusty had done the same, the commentators would have wet themselves. Our Clarry does it naturally. And now he is being compared to Diesel for his handball skills. There are times when it's so good to be a Demon.

Finally managed to see the replay so here are some quick thoughts from what I saw: Umpires were bad for both teams, to me there wasn’t any favouritism just no consistency and logic at times. The Fritch non-mark was terrible and robbed him of a great mark and us a huge goal into 3 quarter. Gawn was incredible, easily best on ground for me. Petracca looks like he’s getting stronger and stronger. Hasn’t hit top speed yet but when he does I pity the poor buggers on the other end. Kent, Bugg, and Wagner all played very good games. Wagner has been in the sights of many here (me included) I’m happy to admit the he played a good game. Kent and Bugg were our dangerous forwards and they did it though harassment and pressure. Also special mention to Frost, he also did some very good things. Hogan as a midfielder I was a little sceptical of but it’s working, I think it would work better with one more tall forward though. Early days our forward entries were terrible. Overall satisfied with the result. We should’ve buried them in the 3rd quarter and we missed some easy shots. We’ve broken the hoodoo and that shouldn’t be underestimated.

I'm ok where we're at but there is still a lot of room for improvement, especially with scoring efficiency. I heard today that an article in one of the papers over the weekend likened MFC to a P-plater behind the wheel of a big V8. A lot of power in the hands of the relatively young. Once the power is harnessed and focused we will be a consistent force, but until then, we're also prone to running of the road into a ditch.

As said we need to keep in mind who the reserves were playing yesterday. I was impressed by the Weid for the first time ever but I would want to see that repeated a few more time yet before he is selected for the seniors. As for when T mac returns I would love us to be in the position of having to wonder how we find a spot for him in the seniors.

They kicked 5.3 in the first quarter and the first 4 un-answered. So it was close to a six goal run in a quarter. You are dodging the real issue though. Which you did earlier in the year and so do many other supporters on here. The next two games are going to be a massive slap in the face for many on here who only choose to look at positives in our game. Hawthorn and Richmond will punish us if we have any sort of lapse. Absolutely punish us.

because of his poor first half against the cats the narrative has become that he has been a disappointment lever has been serviceable, but there's no doubt that his addition to our backline has completely changed our defensive structure he's a super competent footballer, and will get better as he settles he's only 21, and his reading of the play is second-to-none very happy to have him

I don't think any of us as supporters think we are playing @ our best, yet we were a stray kick away from a 3-0 start to the year. We have some key players to return in Viney and TMac, we have a full list to chose from, and a very large playing contingent @ Casey. I'm bullish about the season, I think the Hawks this week should be a great test.

Came here mostly hoping to read that Weid was dominant in a forward/ruck role and wasn't disappointed. This is definitely a missing piece of the puzzle in the seniors side, so fingers crossed he can keep it up and knock the door down.

I reckon we missed Pedo today. With Hogan up the ground / midfield we, particularly early, didn't know where to kick. Pedo, or even Weid, if he is up to it, would give us a focus and someone for the crumbers to feed off. We cant rely on the likes of Kent, Bugge and Garlett to be major goalkickers every week.

1. The relief and surprise, that Kent and Bugg, can display great work ethic for 4 quarters (see Kent's contested work to set up Clarry's goal) and also have accurate kicking 2. Similarly, Hogan's work rate this year has been immense, he is more selfless and that helps the forward line function and be less one dimensional 3. Jeff Garlett... sublime and will knock off Eddie for AA.

There are very few mids with no weaknesses. Even some of the greats have weaknesses. Sam Mitchell - slow/contested marking, Simon Black - slow, Dangerfield - kicking, so on and so forth. Oliver has speed, great hand and foot skills, marking ability, agility, body size, aggression, vision, decision making, etc. He has no weakness. None. That's not to say he'll end up as good as some of those players, as they have a level of sheer brilliance that can't be measured. And that is the only query. Can he show he's capable of the regular sheer brilliance of the greats. I hope so.

Oh god weren't they hilarious: "that's the sound of their jewellery clanking". Go [censored] yourself Eddie. You heard him tremor at the possible PC furore when he said of Majak "plays like tarzan looks like Jane". Had to cover his arse pretty quick. In short. [censored] Eddie McGuire.

North were fancied by many as bottom 2 but after watching the replay, North actually played well against us yet we walked away with a 6 goal win. From what we have seen so far there are teams that have displayed far worse performances than North. Still early and all that but our win yesterday was better than I first thought, IMO.

I go back to the late 50s. I have seen champion midfielders (or centre men as they were once called) like Laurie Mithen, Hassa Mann, Greg Wells, Brian Wilson and others but none had the same range of skills and abilities as Clarry. None had the potential to be as destructive and dominant as Clarry - a consequence of our modern game. In their day it wasn't expected so it is not fair to make comparisons.

Best midfielder I've seen at demons in my lifetime.

Will the replay be on the Melbourne website like it was 2 years ago? I hope so loved watching those games.

The biggest takeaway for mine from that game was Hunt is still severely lacking in confidence. There's no way he'll be picked on that effort, a game in which he could've racked up huge numbers running from defence giving the gulf in class between the two sides. Balic played forward pretty much all game playing as has been mentioned the Melksham type role he was pretty impressive first time I've seen him play. Weeds was the standout forward for not only his goals but his relief ruckwork and general ability to work the length of the ground. It was interesting at times seeing him do the ruckwork in the fwd line despite King being in the vicinity standing in the goalsquare. It's clear they've got a plan to gradually bring weed in to play the Pederson role of fwd/pinch hit ruckman. Peso and Smith were both also pretty handy, it was interesting to see our starting fwd line at the first bounce was Weed, Smith, Pedo and King all talls along with Balic. Started setting up at 6am, and was all over by 10am 637 kids through the consultation area, and every one of them given some kind of medication 2 hearing aids fitted, and 1 referral for a free operation to have club feet treated.
