  1. Can I suggest we show a bit of respect to our players and don't slag off at them. Surely we can discuss someone leaving or a trade, without rubbishing a guy.

  2. I would. You Victorians can keep your own basket cases. Don't be sending them here.

  3. He is absolutely a terrific bloke and a first-class human being. About 10 years ago, a friend of mine was in a plane crash in which a number of people died. Miraculously, she survived, but suffered severe burns to large parts of her body, and the combination of that and an infection meant she ultimately had to have both legs amputated. This would be hard enough for anyone, but was particularly so for my friend, whose favourite past-time was running and competing in marathons - the loss of her legs was devastating. My friend and her partner had been involved with the Swans at this time, and ended up coming into contact with Roosy, who took a close interest in her recovery, which was a long, slow and incredibly difficult process. We see and hear often how players do the right thing by visiting hospitals, spending time with sick kids and the like, but for the most part, by necessity, these relationships are fleeting, one-off acts of kindness. There's just not enough time in the day for it to be any other way. In a way, this happened to my friend, who worked in Parliament House in Canberra - many senior politicians and other 'notable' people were around to support her at the beginning, but most disappeared pretty quickly and got on with their lives, as people do. Roosy was different. He stayed in touch with her, regularly checking in on her health and her rehab as she slowly tried to put her life back together and recover from the horrific trauma of the crash. His friendship and support was invaluable during this time, helping to keep her spirits up despite regular returns to hospital for more surgery and the painfully slow rehab she had to undergo. Ten years on and she's largely been able to move on from that terrible time, but she's still very close with Roosy and his wife, who are now godparents to her young son. My friend and her partner can't speak highly enough of both of them, that they're just A-1 people with a good perspective on life. He doesn't do it for accolades, or because he feels obligated - he does it because he genuinely cares, nothing more and nothing less. So yeh, I reckon he's a legend in more ways than one.

  4. I know it is not an MFC selection but delighted to see Jack Fitz has been selected for the Hawks. Always good to see ex MFC players getting a go. Has had a tough year so hope he has a good game!

  5. I have it on good authority that the club has offered Mitchell a lucrative contract. An offer currently tabled by Sydney is approximately $550k / year, although negotiations appear to have soured. The MFC is willing to table an offer approximately $100 - 150k more/ year, for which Sydney cannot compete against with their already tight salary cap. I'm still awaiting intel regarding the length of the offer. More to come.

  6. A former pick 2, captain of the club who's been debilitated by injuries and hasn't done a full pre-season in 3 years versus pick 80. It's really not a difficult decision. Deserves a one year deal to see if a proper pre-season can get him right. It's not like we're choosing between him and a potential next Jack Viney. Of course he may never get back to what he was but there's so much more potential in Jack Trengove than there is in a pick 80 in this years draft.

  8. Will the AFL ever stop given Ess 'gifts' to help them up the ladder. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-08-24/afl-set-to-soften-rules-around-bombers-topups?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=RSS+feed%3A+AFL+Latest+News Initially the 10 top up players had to go into the draft and any club could draft them. If EFC wanted them they had to pay the draft price. The AFL has now conveniently changed the rules so that the 10 are classified as 'Delisted Free Agents' and can go to the club of their choice, FOR FREE. ie no draft picks involved. Theoretically it looks as if it could benefit any club who wants to draft them but of course any decent ones will go to Essendon, So EFC not only get pick #1 for doping their players, they get most of them back in 2017 and now don't need to use any draft picks to keep any or all of the 10 top-up players that want to stay. I despair at this latest AFL aid to EFC. The complicit silence of all other 17 clubs is astonishing.

  12. Struggling to GAF about this game. I think the excitement of not longer being a 6% chance of finals has us flat I think we will put in a decent show but the players will be flat as well and Cats are playing for top 4 with a week off. Would be great if Hullet made his debut, that would get me fired up. also good to get another game together for Oliver, Angus, Tracca, Hunt, Stretch, Hogan and Weeds alright, I guess I care about the game a little bit then

  13. GCS have drawn a line in the sand, Big time. O'Meara has asked for a trade. GCS have said he is NOT and FA so does not have the right to nominate a club. Therefore they will entertain offers. Its about time a club stood up and said a player cannot call the shots and walk to where they want to go!

  15. First of all kudos to some sensible thinkers on this thread who actually think about the implications of delisting players (Angry and Stuie I'm looking at you two among others). If we delist a player we need to replace them and we need to replace them with something which is either better or has the potential to be better. Trenners is 25 and is dominating the VFL. If we had a VFL player doing what he was doing, we'd be calling for him to be drafted to Melbourne. Trenners puts pressure on the 22 every week and what makes him better - he helps those players become better at training because he is a good bloke. If someone offers me a deal for Trenners (say Hibbard for Trenners), I'd say are we going to get more out of Hibbard then Trenners, then make a decision. We will no delist him, or Pederson, or Grimes, or possibly Matt Jones because they have currency and they will fit into a 44 of one of the 18 teams. You do not simply delist a player who is playing that well at VFL level and has shown they are an effective player at VFL level. I promise you that the Roos, Freo, Dons, Carlton, will all be looking at Trenners, Grimes, Jones. Hawthorn will have a look at Pederson if they dont get Vickery. This all comes back to "greater than". We wont get a Hunt with a pick 81, but if pick 53 gets offered up for Pederson then we need to ask ourselves the question. I would love to see Grimes playing in a best 22 somewhere in the league next year and I'm happy as long as we get some sort of compensation for it - but this talk of delisting is wrong and short sighted. Every year since Melbourne 3.0 (Roos, Taylor, etc) the in's have been much better than the out's (have a look at Wikepedia of our outs each year and it is very clear why we were at the bottom). Let's keep it that way, alright demonland?

  18. Gee....I remember a couple of years ago all the 'experts' of this site were saying that Nev Jetta was a slow, weak, and trade bait.....Things change don't they?. Speed is a funny thing......Hunt has dash and real speed (which we need) The rest of our midfield are not that quick at running but move the ball with speed. Oliver is very smart with his hands as is Tyson but not that quick at running. Posters here are so quick to bag our players, sitting in their easy chair with drink in hand' nit picking at every mistake, say that the grass is greener over the fence, making up trades which have no possibility of happening. When we do have injuries, and we will, we will need the experienced players like Trenners, grimsey and Pedersen to cover instead of a pimply faced 18 year old. I hate trade month.....Will be having a rest from DL for a while.

  19. Trenners can and I think will continue to be an amazing story of endurance and resilience. His 'resurrection' will be an inspirational story for our club and our young players for many years.

  20. So North will offer Pick 11 this year and what will likely be Pick 2 next year??

  21. Lessons should be learned from the mistakes of previous FD’s. Footy clubs are built from people, and both trenners and grimes being shown the door on top of potentially Dunn and Garland (if traded) wipes out a lot of leadership and strength from the playing group. Sure, these 4 might not be best 22 moving forward but if they’re teaching the young guys how to play at Casey and are ready to be serviceable cover for the AFL side as/when injury or form requires. I’d be delisting Terlich, Dawes, Newton & Michie and keeping guys like Trenners and Grimes around.

  22. Guys come on. A bit of respect please. This bloke came to an absolute basket case of a club on its knees and being bailed out by the AFL. He may not have been able to walk the walk as much as we were hoping but his talk, his professionalism and his leadership both on and off the field has been exemplary and second to none. He has also had his moments on the field in some matches/patches. Yes he is on pretty good coin but we needed an injection of premiership/finals experience around the club where there was none (on the field). He has provided us (off and on through injury & form woes) with a target up forward and allowed the FD to at least structure up a very inexperienced forward line while it developed from embyronic phases. His effort and attack on the man and footy (forward pressure/2nd efforts) have been first class and early on he was pretty much doing this in a void up forward. Yesterday I watched him do a few run through at Gosch's with a fitness (physio/PT?) watching on probably testing that dodgy knee again. Let's just say he wasn't pulling up like a young Colt. He is not alone in carrying injuries at AFL level but the passion, effort and mentoring this bloke has provided the club should be applauded and appreciated. We are not long of this earth guys. Everyone is blessed with certain assets and others with less. I saw one who was very much gifted today in Exhibition St going about his business. Old Neita looking as big as as ever but showing his age a little as we all do eventually. Does Dawesy have the talent/skills of a Neita? We all know the answer. But does he care any less, try any less or is he any less professional? I highly doubt it. My gut feel is that Dawesy is a great bloke and a great servant/clubman of the MFC. He surely deserves better than what some are dishing up to him in this thread. This old saying is just as appropriate now as it was centuries ago.... "Be to his virtues very kind, Be to his faults a little blind"

  23. All you Dawes bashers out there need to take a good hard look at yourself. The bloke has no obligation to reject what we offered him so judging him based on his high wage is plain unfair. If your boss offered you a ridiculous pay rise would you reject it because you didn't think you were worth it? He has played the majority of his games at the dees on one leg and goes as hard as anyone, despite his conditioning. He is not the most talented player to grace the afl, yet after last weekends effort it should be clear why it is fairer to judge a player on effort rather than outcomes.

  27. Oh and if ever there was a young mid (outside of Neale) to look like breaking the 700 disposal barrier again, it'd be Oliver. He is an incredible young player. 24 touches with 70% TOG. Please get that tank right and you'll be getting 30 regularly next year. Can you tell I'm excited about him?

  28. Changing of the rules so Essendon can add top-ups to their list seamlessly as DFA but still a firm no to the players involved in the suspensions being granted the same courtesy. It's hard to believe the AFLPA isn't all over this, it's ludicrous.

  29. If there was someone in the club who understands better Trengoves predicament and whats required other than the lad himself Id be interested t know whom. Heres a lad who I have utmost respect for. I was among those who thought all things being equal he would be incredibly lucky to just regain full unabated use of his physical being but he has shown hes not only made of the right stuff he is of the right mind I really want him to succeed. I want what he brought to the game in those early days back . Im sure he does to and will move another mountain to see if he can do just that. Some players ponce around as though some self entitled demi god. Trengove wants to play , and play for us. Let him his chance. If he fails to make the mark it will be just so. If he CAN be the original player we are in luck. Now is NOT the time to call time on this bloke.

  30. I recall seeing a tweet from Trengove that was put up on the club website just prior to his return to playing. The tweet showed a stick of a leg that had withered and degenerated after it had just come out of a long stint of immobilisation from his foot operation. I don't recall exactly when that was, but I seem to think it was something like December 15/Jan 16. That he was even able to get to a point of running at anything like AFL fitness this year amazes me. I'd certainly think his fitness will improve 200% next year after actually completing a preseason as compared to simply getting to first base of a massive injury recovery. After all that he has been through and all that the MFC has invested in him I'd rather see if he can meet his potential in a red and blue guernsey that someone else picking up who could be next years version of Jayden Hunt.

  31. That's not entirely true. My wife's a St Kilda supporter, so I remember the Ball departure pretty well. Collingwood offered their 2nd round pick (25 from memory) and choice of either Nathan Brown (Saints lacked key tall defenders) or Sharrod Wellingham (Saints lacked run). St Kilda played hard ball and lost. No sympathy for them.

  34. Why? WTF is wrong with some supporters? Here are some facts: - We are one of the youngest lists within the AFL - We still lack senior figures and leaders at our club - Harvey's year this season has been as good as any one of our players, if not better - There are no signs that his form will drop considering the shape he keeps himself in There are so many ninnies on here that have 'hang-ups' over individual players at other clubs, it's pathetic. And ya'll base your arguments on exactly that, a 'hang-up'. Yet many supporters are happy to defend the Garlands and Dunns of this world. Genuine degenerates who should be leading the way for our young side but are not. There's a reason Harvey is a champion AFL player and if he even had the faintest bit of interest in playing on for another couple of years, I'd hope to hell we'd be a club that'd be interested in acquiring him. St Kilda, the Dogs, Carlton. All of these teams have had senior figures who inspire, teach and help fast track the development of young lists. Which is part of the reason why they haven't bombed out down the bottom for very long. We're the only club within the AFL besides the newbies, (GWS and GC) who have had to bring in senior experience and leaders. Harvey fits the bill. Without a doubt.

  41. We gave Trenners an extra year to see if he can get over his injury. He has. Now we should give him a chance to have a preseason. I am not arguing for a 5 year deal, but for him to be given the year to see if he can return to the quality player he was.
    3 points
  42. The way the game has changed in the last year or so, speed and a big tank are critical. We also need exceptional skills. It will be Goodie's call. However, when you look at the list, do you 'improve' it by replacing these two with untried or otherwise recycled players from outside? I would suggest that both would be useful to keep. Trenners can definitely use another preseason, and hopefully demonstrate the key skills that we know he can. He is great cover and potentially can push back into the first 22. Grimes would seem to need some additional skills, and does offer some experienced cover. So, unless we have eyes on specific needs, or can't attract quality offers (Wasn't Trenners worth pick 12 to the toigs?) - we should pop these guys on lower, performance based contracts and set them the task of working their way back into the 22.

  49. Paul Roos was on SEN this morning as Ambassador for Father’s Day Fun Run. Regarding Coaching he said (paraphrasing): Carlton game: Played it with a straight bat. Said we aren’t a finals team at the moment and we have another level to go to. His greatest achievement: Will reflect on it after the season. Big thing that’s stands out is the list turnover and gave credit to: Taylor, Viney, Mahoney. Gave great credit to N. Jones for his improvement and performance of captain. Suggested he will be a captain for a few more years but will be a great role model for those that may aspire to replace him. Re finals in 2017 he can’t guarantee when but with Goodwin as coach and the young talent, it will happen probably sooner rather than later. If players really commit to it, 2017 finals can happen. On Goodwin as a coach: Not much will change as he has had a big role this year in the game plan and he has good relationship with the players, good at giving players feedback which is what they want and need as a young group. He enjoys it when in a café and someone comes up and says they are a Melbourne supporter and thank him for what he has done. A most selfless man! So impressed that not once during the interview did he take credit for what has been achieved – passed it on to the people mentioned above. I find it incredibly sad our last game isn't a home game - I wouldn't care if it was at Etihad, at least we could manage the pre/post game activities and Dees supporters could attend in big numbers. I hope Geelong have spoken with PJ and find a way to acknowledge his last game in a special and fitting way.
