  8. Had my last night in Saigon. Stayed at the New World Saigon Hotel - which I highly recommend btw. Anyway they have a " happy hour" 2 hours free beer/wine and food. Well I showed them a thing or two. I was very discerning and started at one end of the wine selection, one end of the food table and worked my way through. I had to instruct the young lady pouring the wine that a glass is best filled to the brim rather than that pretentious partially filled foolishness. Made a complete guts of myself of course. The locals were in awe! Certainly showed them what an Aussie can do. Those Viet Congs will think twice about invading us!

  9. I don't understand why GWS would go for this? I'd obviously be all for it but it's unrealistic.

  10. Congratulations on doing the honourable thing and refusing to betray a confidence. Too few people understand what that means these days. I think GWS made a mistake using their first pick on Boyd when they already had Cameron and Patton but he needs to be there for at least the two years of his contract. From our perspective, we would obviously have the draft pick available to accommodate GWS if Frawley did a runner but Paul Roos has already made it clear he's after midfielders.

  11. We did not get one last year because the AFL allowed club lobbying to influence their decision making process.

  12. according to this http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-18/sylvia-free-agency-compo it was a round 2 pick therefore band 3 band 1 is round 1 (after your regular round 1) band 2 is end of round 1 band 3 is round 2 (after your regular round 2) if you got the wooden spoon then band 2 and 3 would be "effectively" the same (depending whether there were any other band 2's that year)

  17. I have no problem with the reports. They are just honest. They aren't belittling, they simply outline what they did well, what they didn't do well and what the main focus for them is. Good, constructive feedback. We, as supporters, just aren't used to hearing it.

  19. Look, it's pretty simple what the game is missing: poster extra sudden death time! If a player kicks the ball and hits the post then bells, whistles, sirens and fireworks go off, and for the next three minutes 5 balls are in play, while new goal posts rise out of the ground on each wing to prevent goal square congestion. If the post is hit again in this time then 2 extra balls are added and the interchange benches run out to join in the fun. If the post is hit for a third time during 'poster extra sudden death time' then game will stop and the player that was responsible will be booed and pelted with oranges, and scores will be reset to zero.

  20. I would like to see an additional scoring option included in the rules where the player can call out "poster!!" as he kicks the ball on the run (or as he prepares to take a set kick)... if it hits the post he gets 9 points for nominating a shot with a high degree of difficulty. If he doesn't make the call and it hits the post, then it is considered accidental and just the single point is awarded. And to make it more interesting (and to employ a "no shenanigans" rule), if said player does call "poster" and it passes through the goals without hitting the post, his score is devalued to just 3 points. I think it's a goer... anyone else agree?

  21. Do you honestly think after a Casey game they go "okay lads, your review will be on the website on Tuesday, we'll speak after that..." Apparently is your key word here Dean, and I wouldn't believe for a second that the coaches haven't discussed this with the players first or at least made them aware.

  22. My issue with it is - I find it completely unnecessary. The players should receive feedback and it should be done one on one. The only the positives I can see for this method is for the supporters and as you have pointed out - I can only see a negative for the players. I will repeat - I have performance reviews but it isn't published in the company newsletter.

  24. People get seduced by high pick's too easily. If you took Boyd purely on his performance this year and not on his draft position you'd have to have a very different opinion of him. He's been extremely poor in his first few games. Hardly got a touch. On the basis of those performances he would be a huge risk. He might be a player who's early physical development gave him a huge advantage at Junior level but he doesn't kick on at Senior level. He is a risk at this point. Do we need to take more risks with high draft picks. I think not. Jono O'Rourke has been very disappointing so far even though he was a no. 3 pick. You wouldn't offer up one of our high picks for him now.

  26. WE have no hope of a PP. We have been more competive this year than last year. We didnt get one last year we were a total basket case. so forget that option. IF Chip goes, we trade that pick for Boyd, Throw in Blease, with a 3rd rounder for Shiel. $cully gets his best mate in his team. Hogans Heroes does the honourable thing, we reach a comprise, instead of NEVER posting on here again, he refrains from posting until 2015. Homey removes his rose coloured glasses and stops drooling over the 42 players on the list, and accepts the facts, approx 8 wont cut the mustard. Essendon gets kick out of the league for 12 months, Collingwood fold. We get to train on the "G' once a week. Gillon McLachlan sees the funny side of Connolly's off the cuff remark and reimburses 50% of our fine. 2016 Stretch and Lovett are ripping it up off the 1/2 backline. Hogan and Boyd lead the coleman. Oh for a perfect world.

  28. I think pedo plays better when he plays second ruck. I'd drop Gawn and bring in a mid.
    2 points
  29. Roos May want mids mids mids, but you can't be over zealous about one type of player. Boyd would be a great get. We could move Hogan to CHF or even CHB he has a decent tank and could play most key positions. It wouldn't be wrong for Roos to snap him up at the detriment to getting one mid-fielder.

  30. Actually they are in this mess because they didn't get rid of their senior players earlier. I think it was just terrible list management. St Kilda cashed up on early draft picks in the last 90's - early 2000's. Their list underachieved, this was until they made consecutive grand finals in 2009-2010. In 2010, they were lucky to get there, IMO their list was playing above themselves. Granted they nearly won and decided to top up in 2011. The problem with St Kilda is that at this time, they had no youth coming through. So while Ross Lyon wanted a flag and to top up - he appeared to neglect blooding youth. 2011 was a failure and Lyon left at the end of it. Now personally I didn't see them that strong in 2011, I didn't see a need to sell youth down the drain. Ross opted to go for a flag, neglect youth, he didn't get it - so he leaves. At the end of 2011 season, Ross leaves St Kilda with no coach and no club directions. St Kilda should've seriously considered offloading Riewoldt to the GC for 2011. Should've floated Montagna and Dal Santo for trade at the end of 2010 or even 2011. Goddard should've assumed the captaincy and taken on a highly talented bunch of kids. If St Kilda had of planned ahead, they'd now be in a great position - looking forward to a decade of challenging for finals. Now St Kilda are struggling and they'll want a PP. Why should the AFL reward St Kilda a PP for shocking list management?

  31. We are also in desperate need of tall talent, particularly if Frawley goes. We have one legitimate key back in Tommy Mac, one legitimate forward yet to play a game in Hogan and a workhorse in Dawes and Jamar on his last legs in the ruck. Why do we think Casey are struggling? Yes a lot of the VFL guys are not to the standard but also they have a lack talls. We have no backups let alone top liners. Clark left a big hole, Frawley will just make it deeper and we have to hope Hogan gets on the park. Big ask for a kid. The reality is our list needs major surgery still and we need players in all positions if we are to be competitive let alone a finals chance.

  32. we were well beaten by a much better side.

  33. Spot on. We need to concentrate on getting players who can deliver the ball to the forward 50 before we recruit a KPF.
    2 points
  34. Just imagine if you took all the talent from GWS and divided it amongst the heavily struggling bottom 8 teams. The entire make up of the league would be miles better for it, with less blow outs, more even teams, a chance for any team to make finals in any given year. But no, let's keep pushing ahead with a doomed Western Sydney experiment.

  36. Jaded, I don't expect one, but if the requirement now is that we 'apply' for one, rather than get given one, I'd be dissapointed if we didn't apply. Wewill finish the year between 4 and 6 wins, depending on the outcomes of our games against Brisbane and GWS. It is unlikely we'll win more than that. That means we will have on 38-40 matches in 8 years, less than 5 matches per year. Apparently the new formula is based on: premiership points that a club has received over a period of years (with greater weight to recent seasons), a club's percentage (points for/points against x 100) over a period of years (another indication of on-field competitiveness, with greater weight to recent seasons), any finals appearances that a club has made in recent seasons, any premierships that a club has won in recent seasons, and a club's injury rates in each relevant season. To me, we clearly qualify in all of those criteria over the past 8 seasons. Average of 19-20 premiership points per season over 8 years, and average of 13-16 in the past 3 years (recent results). Our percentages in those 8 seasons have been (rounded) 75%, 54%, 67%, 85%, 95%, 75%, 63% and 78%. 5 of 8 were below 75.0% over eight years, while the most recent three are quite poor, particularly the 54% No finals since 2006 (8 years, or a whole football generation). No premierships in recent seasons. No particular injury rates that have caused us to have a bad year (the West Coast rule). To put into context how bad we are: In their last 5 seasons, Fitzroy won 27 games at an average of 5.4 per season, better than our last five seasons. In Fitzroy's last 8 seasons they won 50 games. 25% more than we have! If we don't qualify, no one ever should. I would argue that we have done the right things of field, put a good team into place in the admin side of the club, and that we have put together a fantastic football operations department including coaches but that we only have a limited window to get it right. If we aren't seeing results in another 12-24 months with the current coaches, and within the current period of club stability, then it will be all for nothing. Also, while we have improved on field, we have recruited players like Cross and Vince who have only a limited window, thus the normally slow rebuilding process will not be fast enough to see significant improvement, let alone maintain the status quo, as we need not only turn over the players who aren't up to it, but find/develop replacements for those older guys who are clearly in our top 10. We need to turn over 50% of our list, but you can only realistically improve 10-15% of your list each year, the other 10-15% of changes are either effectively swapping like for like or are drafting for development; it may improve your list but not for 2-3 years. A priority pick now, that we can trade, will give us the opportunity to improve our list by 20% this season and allow us to be competitive immediately. That's how I'd be framing it.

  45. After seeing the Saints in action they are absolutely deplorable - and some of their better players are heading towards the end. We were just as bad last year and did not get a PP - and one of our best players Clark retired this season. If the Saints get a PP there is no justice in the system. But for the good of the game they probably need one but I think the AFL will want to wait and see how they pan out next year before considering a PP.

  46. would anyone seriously not have Boyd ??
    1 point
  47. This is an interesting topic. The Saints need a PP soon. But if they are to get one (or two) in the next few years - we must be awarded one at the end of this season. It is ridiculous that a team that went 6 and 38 was told that Clark 'coming back' was reason to not get assistance and now we are looking like being 12 and 54 over the last three years with Clark retiring from football and Frawley possibly leaving through FA. Equalisation includes Priority Picks given at the discretion of the Commission - if they are to able to use that in the future they must consider the MFC at the end of 2014 or remove Picks as a form of equalisation. And who is hurt by the hubris of Evans and those that said we don't 'deserve assistance'? The Demons, Saints, Lions, Blues, and any other team with a sick list in the future.
