Don't know how many times it needs to be said, but sorry, Bennell doesn't pick himself. And I really dislike this term "pea heart", especially when it comes from so called supporters, directed at their own players, and from people who probably wouldn't get a game at any level.6 points

What I would like to know is why not a single person in the media has given Kreuzer as much shite as Jack Watts. Kreuzer has been a year longer in the system and delivered squat while media flogs continue to bang on about how good he will be. And thank God Warnock chose the brown baggers over us, spud!5 points

Sh1te.Nothing I enjoy more then watching these cheating, arrogant flogs lose. The 2000 Qualifying final is still one of my favs.4 points

It just shows the pitfalls of tanking, doesn't it? Tanking destroys the fabric of the club and the perception of the club from the wider football community; it paints the club as cheats. I must confess I wasn't anti tanking and was quite happy to see us lose games for high draft picks but on reflection it did us a lot more harm than good, Carlton are in an even worse position than us because of their sustained tanking and arrogance, at least we've recognised that we had to change things but they seem to think that they can roll on and a flag will follow. Every club that was in a worse position than us before we tanked has out run us and is better off, it just goes to show that number one picks don't win flags, hard work and integrity does.3 points

"No one person dominates the Collingwood football club," McGuire said. I just about fell out of my chair! What delicious irony!3 points

Just remind me who stole West Coast's coach and did the deal mid season, while WC were in contention for finals. BTW who poached Buckley from the Bears and A.Rocca from the Swans.3 points

Our club has had huge success with our top 10 picks from the past 5 years, Morton, Watts, Scully and Trengove only two will be at our club in 2014 and if we can get a trade it may be 2013. This kid is a 250 game player there is no chance we are not picking him up. Imagine the flip side we don't take him, pick 3 ends up being another Morton and Viney goes to GWS with Sculls and wins a flag, now that would be a dagger into the heart of our club.3 points

I've evolved from a pretentious [censored] to an opinionated toss-pot here .So there is room for growth .3 points

Carlton are never going to win a flag with their current list. Seriously. They kick to Gartlett and Betts like they're gorillas, they don't have the ability to shut down a pacey forward like Breust and get monstered when forced to work for their own footy rather than being given time and space. Said it four years ago and my Carlton-supporting mates laughed at me.3 points

Melbourne supporters are funny, They'd carry on just like Eddie if another club was in to our best player. And if he were our president they'd love his commitment and passion. Yet they ridicule him for doing exactly what his supporters no doubt want him to do. He's been a fantastic president for that club.2 points

They may have said this to squeeze a deal out of us. That's exactly what I would do if I was them - tell everyone "we'll bid for Viney" and then do a secret deal with MFC to not bid - that guarantees them a benefit they wouldn't otherwise get.2 points

Good luck Eddie, the West Australian clubs have the biggest cheque books in the AFL. I can see Travis Cloke being the environmental spokes person for Woodside. The issue the Pies have Cloke signs they will lose players with O'Brien and Beams the likely candidates2 points

Overly convoluted discussion RE: Viney. We'll either take him with #3 or a second round pick. We will NOT not take him. It's critical to our success that it's the second rounder, but someone will probably bend us over. The endgame is half a season away.2 points

People. Just to let you know that you should not give up on Demonology. There are discussions taking place and a meeting will be organised shortly to see what can be done. In the meantime, please feel welcome to discuss the nostalgic past and keep the conversation going here. I'll post when I can report something a little more concrete.2 points

Agree. We've committed to the kid and his family.2 points

Just don't forget that GWS and Sheedy will want our pick more than they will want to annoy us. That suggests a deal for an Under 17 and............. Yes I know the father /son is done before trading, but there is plenty of time for discussion after the season, when final ladders positions are known and before the F/S date.2 points

This is what gets me about this "debate". In the longer term, the difference between 3 and 7 an irrelevance. Anyone in the top dozen or so would be pretty much interchangeable, and you only have to look back over previous drafts to see that. Try the 2006 draft for example. 3 was Lachlan Hansen. OK player. 7 ... Joel Selwood. If we had to take a second rounder in our first round to ensure getting him as a F/S, we'd need to do some thinking. But to take a high first rounder high in the first round ... don't even need to think about it.2 points

88kgs! You would hope that he would reach around 100kgs at some stage but he has put on about 7kg this year. That's an awesome effort. Hopefully he will be around 91 - 93 by the start of next year. Unfortunately he has shrunk 1cm. http://www.melbournefc.com.au/players/playerprofile/lucascook/tabid/8357/playerid/22237/category/senior/season/2012/selected/bio/default.aspx1 point

well let's say we dodged the second bullet and ended up in damage control rather than disaster make no mistake polis did us damage, fortunately many other clubs and organisations were also damaged which helped a little in deflecting the damage1 point

GWS will not take the risk if MFC pick up the phone. T.Viney: Hi kevin you little toss bag Todd viney here Jack's dad. K.Sheedy:OHHH hi Todd how can i help. T.Viney: I am just calling to tell you i will break both your legs and jam that big ugly head were it dont fit if you bid on my boy. K.Sheedy: UMMM im sorry todd gubby said it not me. T.Viney:Fix it Kevin. Now. K.Sheedy:Sorry for the trouble todd it will not happen again. T.Viney: Good and send my love to Tom BEEP BEEP.1 point

I have absolutely no doubt we'll pick Viney and never regret doing so.1 point

LOL. I loath Carlton. Almost as good watching Carlton lose, as it is watching Melbourne win. When Carlton loses to Melbourne, one day, it will be like the world's greatest footballing orgasm. One day.1 point

I can't understand the lack of love for Eddie. Don't forget in the firmament, that Collingwood are our true and natural rivals, and as such are due a certain amount of respect. Now Kev Baby from Richmond/ Essendon, and lately from Sydney West F.C is the true villain who surely commissioned his foot soldiers to do a Dealey Plaza on Brad Green and The Snake, and then pinched our one-and-only young Tommy-turnover Scully.1 point

I have had a total gutful of Madman McGuire. His egotism, bullying, ranting and red-faced narcissistic psychosis is an embrrassment to anyone who likes to talk, comment and interact with footy. As Gina Reinhart is to publishing Eddie is to footy - a total [censored] and the industry is embarrassed by him. He spoils my enjoyment of reading articles, listening to SEN and all the other footy stuff I enjoy. Eddie - no one gives a rats tossbag about your war-chest, your "big club here at Collingwood", your attack on Fremantle, or any other load of loud mouth carp you wish to vent. Just go away and leave us all alone, we are sick to death of you.1 point

Good on Eddie. He is only standing up for his people like we should when our lily-livered club let Ron Barassi walk out on our club with the well-wishes of the coach.1 point

"Because if we lose Cloke I will have a war chest and will declare war on the world." This is just absurd. Does he listen to himself?1 point

How dare anyone encroach on Eddie's turf. What arrogance! What disdain for the rights of Eddie and the rest of the filth! Only Eddie and the filth have the right to poach or encroach or be arrogant or do what they bloody like! That's the law!1 point

On record? Signed off on a lawfully binded contract? The more I read into it, the less I'm convinced anyone else is bidding. These uber-professional organisations don't have time for petty mind games I would've thought.1 point

It's not the public perception that concerns me. I couldn't care less what opposition supporters, or the media think. Most clubs have a reputation at draft time, i.e. Essendon were impossible to deal with and Port would stand on their principles. I don't want to overstate how any backflip from Melbourne may effect their reputation at the trade table, but it seems to me that if you say one thing and do the opposite you don't help your profile when it comes to future negotiations. But it may be insignificant in the overall context of things. I'm starting to think that GWS, or Gold Coast won't bid for Viney. Gold Coast will want Whitfield and won't want him slipping through to GWS and GWS don't really need him when you consider their vast array of contested ball winning mids: Greene, Coniglio, Dom Tyson, Ward, Adams, Treloar. I understand the argument that you can never have enough, but they may want a top shelf ruck talent like Grundy, when you consider they're relying on Giles and Brogan.1 point

its all just posturing, brinkmanship with a little bit of showtime thrown in for the AFL's benefit . We going to get dizzy watching this go round and round..... Vineywill play at Melbourne1 point

On what you saw today ? Good grief man. Even Wines speaks in awe of Viney. And Viney was clearly rusty coming off a 6 week break from a broken jaw. Viney is exactly the inside quality mid we need. Based on their history you'd choose Viney. I absolutely love Toumpas' class, movement and poise. Being the SA captain he'd add to the quality type of people we're developing. And there's no doubt that Garlett is really special. I don't know where he fits in from a draft perspective, but he looks better than Yarran who went at 6.1 point

If you all remember, Blease was dropped for the GWS game but was recalled late as an emergency. Did he do enough last week to overturn what was probably a poignant dropping? Probably not. Therefore, he is out of the team this week for whatever reason he was omitted last week.1 point

Absolutely. I do strongly agree with your point Olisik, and having met Todd I know he wouldn't put Jack over the needs over the football club. I am differing in my view to alot here but I think it's something Melbourne need to do for more than a footballing stand point. I have reasonable knowledge of the upper echelon of this years draft picks and Jack is well and truly within the range of 3-12. He is a gun. He's small, but football is removing itself from the year's where we drafted 'athletes' and back to picking footballers. And Jack Viney is a footballer's footballer. The moral standpoint is my second and more important point. Melbourne over the past 2-3 years have made some moves that some both outside and inside the club have questioned. Letting go off McDonald and Bruce as we did has let hurt the image of us. Jack Viney is not our only F/S pick coming up. Billy Stretch is coming through the system also and him watching Jack get brought into the club than thrown out to GC or GWS for little benefit IMO sends another bad message- We're not a family, we don't look out for our own- we look out for ourselves. Football is a business, everyone understands that. But for certain servants you are willing to give an extra year too (hindsight: James McDonald) and for some future servants you are willing to reach in the draft knowing they will bust their bloody ass off for 250 games and want to show up every critic who suggests we shouldn't have taken them where we did (hopefully: Jack Viney).1 point
-
So the Whatever It Takes ethos ends pretty bloody quickly... I am trying to find a way, that stands up to Game Theory, of getting Viney at Pick 25 and allow us to effectively have another top 5 pick. I think you are confusing some bitterness you have toward GWS/AFL with an uncompromising attitude toward doing what is best for the MFC. Because that's what we are talking about here - not sticking it up anyone, but getting the best result for the MFC.1 point
