Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Heard this on the Rumour File on AW this morning.

"Rumour as fact. Tom Scully has been offered $6 million over 6 years if he signs with Greater Western Sydney." (or words to that effect).

Sounds like GWS has been reading the training reports on 'Demonland'.

That rumour is straight from Big Footy, I know that for a fact because I read it on there.

It sounds like a large amount of money - an offer to good to refuse. However if Scully continues to improve and becomes one of the top 5 players in the league (a strong possibility) then in 2-4 years time this is the sort of money he will receive, regardless of which club he plays for. Money shouldn't be the driving factor when his manager renegotiates his contract this year.

Scully is an ultra-professional who wants to achieve success (a premiership) in his career. If the Dees do well this year and finish in the top 8, he may feel his best chances of a flag lie with his current team mates. If we finish bottom 4 then he might look elsewhere.

Smart thinking by GWS. Offering an amount of money that would right now seem massive for someone that has just played 1 year of footy but as his value increases would lock him in to a price that would be lower than his actual net worth in 2-4 years time.

I say no deal ....no bingno...no way Jose will this go through...

...then again if Richmond came knocking in 3 years time....

No, only about 90+% I'd expect!

Personally I don't think GWS should be able to approach uncontracted players under a certain age (say 24)

There should be some protection for clubs with young developing players

I agree with Daisycutter it makes a mockery of the draft system.

GWS is the AFL's dopiest outing yet.

GC makes sense with all the ex Vics there and its a growing area without a solid base of RL support.

Western Sydney will be a wasteland for the AFL.

They will struggle to get 7000 to a game out there.

What people forget is that even top Swans players can wander around Sydney unrecognised which means after footy there is not much leverage for them here for post footy opportunities.

It will be worse in Western Sydney.

Of course Scully would have to consider a deal like that but he will have to consider the longer term outcome as well.

I would have thought that his life after football will be a lot better if he is in an established AFL state and that is what Cameron and Jimma should (probably are) tell him.

An entree to business and a future after football will not exist after GWS if he wants a Judd type deal he needs to be in Vic , WA or Qld.

I cant see Sheedy being able to deliver a deal that is the "whole package": Dollars as he plays, a premiership shot and a retirement package.

Well, if we didn't make a mockery of the draft system for several seasons we most likely would never got Scully in the first place.

It was OK then for the AFL to turn a blind eye to our tanking but now they have GWS on their "need to build up" agenda. Perhaps we may get paid back with karma. For years we never had many top players worthy of poaching by other clubs. Now having genuine young talent has created new problems for us. If he does go to GWS there is nothing we can do about it. Our tanking efforts will be seen as a waste of time. If he stays he could become the highest paid player by miles at the club despite still being a relative novice. Perhaps being paid far more than he is worth. It will be difficult for other rising players who will have to make do with a lesser share of the spoils. Managing these type of big time player issues will be a new challenge for the club that could make or break us.

this [censored] scares me..

Not me. You know what would really scare me us if he WASN'T getting these offers. This is big time afl. This is the position EVERY club wants to be in. Besides... 1 mil a year will look like small fry in years to come.

While i am not surprised that Scully would be a target for GWS, i find it hard to see how they could justify that much money on someone so young. GC got gazza for about a similar price, dont you think they would go for a proven player first? Im not realy sure i believe this rumour, can anyone honestly confirm this as fact?

How can you possibly say that? you get good reward when you win 4 games or less and in 2007 we were the worst team in the league, a rabble on 4 wins when we entered round 22. The blues cheated and tanked and we lost our second round priority pick that year (2007)and subsequestly could have had picks 1 and 2 in the Watts draft (2008).

Make no mistake we were cheated out of draft picks by Carlton, one team we can never go light on in future. Also, we would have got Scully regardless as Trengove is who we obtained because of a priority pick.

make a mockery of the draft system? We just claimed what was right.

Don’t forget you are rewarded for consecutive years down the bottom and we had 5 then 4 then 4 wins. Imagine if we had 5 then 4 then 5 wins and got virtually nothing but a second round pick whilst the Carlton’s and Hawthorn’s get multiple priority picks.

You make some good points adc even if it is a tu quoque argument

My point about the age limit for uncontracted players was more to do with it not being very logical for building a new club (in a reasonable manner)

I thought the draft concessions (17YOs and preference picks) was about giving GWS a lift for youth and future development, wheras the uncontracted player concession was to give GWS a means to get some good experienced mature players initially. To set no age limit on the uncontracted player concession just allows them to double dip on the youth side of things. It also means that clubs who have recruited well and developed players don't get an opportunity for much return on these players and probably wont get a reasonable AFL concession (read draft pick) for such players when GWS contract them because they haven't yet built up good stats (B&F, games etc).

I never said anything about a mockery (that was Robbie) but yes there are many things you could criticise over the AFL drafting policies, but overall it is not a bad system and one loop hole here or there is not a justification for another one

Obviously, I'm biased here, I don't want to lose Scully, but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to allow GWS to raid another club's nursery. Of course in normal circumstances Tom could always reject a MFC contract renewal and take his risks in the Draft, though with GWS's expanded salary cap they would have the best chance of outbidding anyone

Lets hope the rumour is a complete furphy, and if not that Tom values other aspects more highly than just money.

Scully has stated previously he wants to be a one club player and preferred prior to being drafted to stay in Victoria; to stay in Melbourne.

But something tells me this won't be the last thread on this sort of topic. And this thread will no doubt have plenty of pages...

How time flys too. People easily forget J.McMahon in snatching the win off the Dees. Karma....pfft.

I have a mate who works for the Kangaroos who told me that GWS have pretty much signed 3 players so far. One of them is Scully on those terms above. One of the other players is Jimmy Bartel.

I lol'd.

So did I, I like the off-season, you can always guarantee there will be a thread that will make you smile.....this is complete rot....Scully has already said he wants to be a one club man, he is the face of MFC down Casey way.......nothing to see here.....move on

I'd be surprised and bitterly disappointed if he's already signed a $6M 6 year contract with GWS but equally "nothing to see here" is ostrich material. It's a certainty he'll be offered a massive contract by GWS and we'll have work to do to retain him.

It is not Ostrich....I will believe it when he sits at a press conference in a GWS jumper and says I have signed.....we had the same with the Gold Coast and to be brutally honest about the playing ability of the players the only real 'catch' was Gary Ablett the rest were good professional players.....GWS will have a wish list....what they get will be different......looking foward to seeing Tom tear teams a new one whilst playing for Melbourne THIS SEASON

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
