POSTGAME: Rd 06 vs Brisbane

That's the thing though, it was never going to be experience that got us over the line. Quite the contrary, this win was largely attributed to our youth, and new game plan focused on speed and movement. Brisbane looked slow at times. They punished us at times, but mostly, we were pro-active, and they weren't.

It's all lazy journalism to suit a narrative...

4 specific critical goal assists was very good, included were 2 excellent contested marks. King needs to say to him,... Son I'm backing you come what may for the next month or two, give yourself a chance!

King said in his presser he liked Jeffo's game.

We 100% looked better forward with 3 talls and the ability to swing Fritter forward to change it up.

3 talls fwd put extra pressure on when Langford went forward as it caused a mismatch with his marking ability.

Once or twice an op was missed when he presented with a marking opponent mismatch.

King said JVR's game was better today than round 1 when he kicked 6 as he played higher today - a result of 3 forward talls.

It was one of the most even team performances since the Northey era. Pickett and Gawn were great contributors but not standouts as they usually are. Today it was an even spread right across the ground, with everybody contributing when it was their turn. That is by far the best way to watch your team play - when there is no reliance on any one individual but everyone rises to the occasion. It's what made the Northey teams so successful over such a long period - 20 goers who gave it their all. Today was absolutely the same vibe. Massive shoutout to Koltyn Tholstrup who did a number of really silly things last week, and this week turned it around completely. He was reliable and safe, and made some great decisions. Blake Howes is also turning into a really reliable player. And the move of Langdon to defence was a masterstroke. He was very influential today. Chandler after a slowish start was super, Langford had one of those days where things came off for him. I'd love him to work on his right side - I think it'll save him a lot of trouble down the track. Latrelle had some good moments too and got himself involved at important times. And Fritsch played one of his better games since 2021. Now to back it up.

Jeffo competed well and got himself into position to take marks ... just needs to start holding them. He worked hard to get to the front position. He might be alright

Despite the tall forward line, we teamed well up forward and worked hard to keep the ball in play up forward

The Lions had to work hard to get the ball forward from about 70-80 metres from their goals. Our defensive pressure was very good and we made them look quite vulnerable at times

It was a great comeback win as we looked in trouble at half time

We'll learn a lot from this win ... perseverance & belief

2 contested marks is the same as Roo, same as Logan Morris, 2 more than Oscar Allen and only 1 less than Harris Andrews (the best mark in the league).

The talent is all there, just a matter of finding the belief and intensity.

And he’s a gorgeous field kick and good decision maker.

Biggest weakness is set shots, he can help fix some of that from going the snap more inside 35 but he’s too good a field kick to not sort it with the right coaching and mental work.

Massive vindication of the changes that were made last season through the leadership of the likes of Guerra, Smith, Green and I suspect, Richardson, perhaps others on the Board and in the FD.

OK, early days, long way to go, but we're starting to see the results of the new broom. I thought that King's "I want this to be a place where players look forward to coming to work each day" was almost a throw away line or a given, but it clearly goes much deeper than that.

Well done those people.

From The Age:

'The Demons had exploded in the third quarter with six goals, as they took every chance inside 50 kicking accurately to hurt the Lions on the scoreboard. At one point they had kicked 10 goals straight from set shots via marks inside 50. They finished with 12 goals straight from 12 set shots.'

Unbelievable.

This would have been 2.10 in years past.

Please, nothing in that at all

It will certainly face scrutiny, factors in his favour is the bump was not high and it would be hard to argue he could foresee mihocek would be where he was to cause an issue. Against him is that the bump happened marginally late so he might have had other options. This video is slowed down so makes it look later than it was. It’s going to be a tough one.

And ...

In spite of all the talk about game plans etc etc, I'd suggest that so much of what we're seeing is anchored in great leadership and good man-management. King is obviously smart and knows his footy, but it's his relationship with the players and the other coaches and staff which is the key.

Also that from the President and the Board down, everyone is on the same page. Just makes a world of difference.

There's a bit to work with re Jeffo

At ground level as well but he's a work-in-progress. Tackling is effort and a mindset. As are 2nd & 3rd efforts

He just needs a lot more games as he is just starting out

I was against 3 talls up forward but the Lions backs were quite often panicky

Worth persevering with? (3 talls up forward)

Heath? We need to keep giving him a taste but that might be a week-to-week proposition

Went along today, and just as @Swooper1987 said, was a very even contribution from all.

I was most excited about how composed the backline was today, especially Tholstrup and Howes.

Both Kozzie and Latrelle spotting up teammates in the forward 50. Love it. Previously Kozzie would’ve pinged away, he has matured into a team player these last 2 years.

Sharp is surprising us all, doing team things, bobbing up for goals.

Keep it up Kingy, we are loving it 🥰

Okay everyone, you know it is coming and I'll try to be brief, but...

EVEN LITTLER GOFFY REMAINS UNDEFEATED!!!

Demons are 4 from 4 in games my now 9-month old has watched any part of.

3 talls was a good call especially Andrews, Gallop and Lester aren’t counter attacking players, so attempting to nullify Harris and take advantage of the other 2 was a good call.

And Fritsch on the wing early was worth a look to buy some rotations and make sure we can still pressure up forward.

I agree the second efforts and tackling aren’t natural to Jeffo but unlike JVR he has the light feet to do it. Mihocek is such a great role model because he does his absolute best to pressure, if Jeffo can give half the effort on the ground of Checkers he’ll make a big impact on the deck.

Was at a work event hoping to get to the MCG at half time or at least at home to watch.
Flat battery. My fault.
I inadvertently spied the half time scores (incorrectly as it turned out) but got home and just watched the game in full. SO I'm a few hours behind but wanted to say `'Yeah baby". I am pumped big time.

Sharpy isn't surprising me. He always looked to me like the perfect, cheap ANB replacement. He just needed more game time. His running is an absolute weapon.

Did any of the Fox callers realise it was his small kick-up that started the chain for his goal? I didn't hear any of them give him the credit.

Nothing to see here.

That win was worth it. I gave up my Sunday shift at work so I could go

What Dedication! Go Dees.

I think next year we need to mix up the Irish music. Get a bit of riverdance in there to.

It was great to see the crowd on their feet waving their scarves or their green hats, which the club sold out of by the way. They raised $104k .

Hope Jim's family had smiles on their faces

Langdon playing his best season since 21. I thought he was heading for a de-listing but he has been excellent.

Wow really..?

Not both him and Heath, whoever plays that 3rd tall needs to be also be the backup ruck. My biggest issue with Jeffo is he is a horrible set shot which immediately rules him out for mine, I think Jeffo might be worth putting down back with Petty out next week as I just don’t see a future for him up fwd.

Now he's officially joined 7, I saw him at the ground today. He'd be lapping it up being back in the rooms & seeing what gossip he can pick up

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
