Farewell Steven May

Featured Replies

One of his best nights. Career highs in disposals and marked everything that came his way.

It would be remiss not to share his GF highlights as well. Incredible considering he'd more or less ripped his hamstring from off the bone.

One of the legendary stories of the 2021 season was the way in which Steven overcame the pain barrier and not only played injured but starred in the biggest game of the year. That sort of physical and mental toughness is the key to winning a premiership.

Congratulations to Maysie on a sensational career including three or four seasons as the elite key position defender in the game.

I think many around him lifted and walked a little taller when him and Rick teamed up at their best from 2021 and at least parts of 2022 and 23.

The effect of that during this period, the driving of standards.

2021 might not have been if not for this desire to push through to greater heights.

A player you could completely trust against any opponent on any day during his peak.

Ty for fronting up day after day on the track, the gym, the on field second efforts, the bumps, the amazing spoils, the argy bargy / strategic discussions behind the play between you and Rick and your big part in so many emphatic victories.

Forever our stonewall FB.

Forever our Premiership hero

Forever grateful.

All the best Mayzie!

His trade from the Suns ultimately an overwhelming success

One of the best key backs I've seen

Was that trade something like pick 6 for Hogan which we then traded on to the Suns for May. I can't help but think even if gets three Colemans and premiership medallions over the next three years we won big time. (There's no guarantee Hogan would ever recaptured his best staying with us.

Embrace your family, Footy's just a game, blink and you career is over.

Seeing those highlights, what a player for us! All the best.

Competitive beast.

Winner.

Played in a granny on one leg.

Time to move on, for sure, but always a legend in my eyes.

Briefly met Steven with my youngest demon supporting daughter, post ‘21 Grand Final 24 hours after the final siren. At ‘the Cott’, a Perth seaside institution, he was definitely the last man standing. He cut an imposing figure but still managed a smile for the camera.

My last Demons' ‘live’ game was against the old dark navy blues at the ‘G R12 ‘23. Steven resplendent in the #1 guernsey made his opponent, Charlie Curnow look like a school boy. The May lead Demon defence, ensured the media hyped Carlton attack managed an improvised 6 goals for the evening. It was starvation corner down there.

When Steven May was on song which was much more often than not. There was an almost intimidating ‘aura’ about him, a dominating physical presence. He would play football to win, which he ultimately achieved so memorably with his teammates in ‘21. That premiership was ‘the Grail’ for the Demon faithful.

Hail Steven May Premiership Demon Champion.

All the best to you and yours' Steven, we've got you at full back.

A fantastic footballer.

2020-2023 was the best defence I’ve ever seen in the red and blue. It was because of May.

Thanks for the happy memories.

Having Steven May at the Demons was a novelty - he could take contested marks, was quick and strong, fearless and could actually kick the ball.

In my time i've seen an array of KP defenders at the Dees with a few of these attributes, but never in the one player.

I'll be forever grateful that he came to our club - a premiership may have otherwise eluded us.

Go well Steven and hope the next part of the journey takes you where you want to go.

Thanks @Demonland

Steven May should be applauded.

He had the courage to come to the Melbourne Footy club to help us get that ultimate prize, the long awaited Premiership.

May & Lever. They arrived and became a rock of defence. May was strong and was the premier Full Back for many years.

🏆thank you Steven. You will be always remembered as a key player in our premiership year. You had the passion to succeed and get the best from you and your teammates. Best wishes for your future.

Sad end and not the way he deserved to go out.

Rock solid in our premiership year. Out standing over the journey for us.

Best game I saw him play was the 23 final against Carlton. He had curnow in his pocket. Towering performance on a disappointing night when the rest of the team couldn’t rise to the occasion.

I wish him well in his retirement.

That Carlton 23 SF was his best game in red and blue by a long shot.

Repelled copious amounts of entries with aplomb.

Safe and assured during our Premiership window.

Go well lad, enjoy your retirement with a few quiet bevies.

🏆🥇🇱🇮❤️

I hope the club recognises him as a legend as well.

Thank you Steven May you helped stiffen our backline to such an extent we suddenly had the best backline in the league, a Premiership backline, with you, Rick and Angus as our main components.

Good luck with all future endeavours for you and your family your heroics from 2020-2023 will be long remembered.❤️💙🥲

Of the Big Three we’ve lost since the end of ’25, this man will easily be the hardest to replace. The best big backman of the last 60 years (at least) to play for the club. Could hold gorillas and mids - few have done that consistently over multiple years in my time watching footy. Under rated/appreciated by some, but those of us who watched him every week know that without his on field contribution. we don’t win in ’21. Will alway love Maysie and be forever grateful for helping to deliver the Holy Grail. Always in my heart.

Quite simply Maysie, thanks for your efforts in the Red and Blue, one of the main men in our dominant back line.

Best of luck in life after footy and may there be many years of happiness ahead for you and your family

Thanks Maysie. Your passion for our great Club, and contribution to our drought breaking premiership are undeniable. Courage personified, ❤️💙 forever!

All the very best for the future!

Gosh a lot has happened in the past 12 months. If you told me round 1 last year, that in 12 months time r1 2026 there would be no trac, Oliver, may & no goody you may not be surprised by some of those names missing but you may not have thought all 4 would had been cleared out

If I see him at the Lennox head hotel he’ll be getting a schooey of Seven Mile or Common People or Wandana sent his way

Then I’ll wind him up with a bit of golf niggle

What a hoot

Best Demons defender I’ve ever seen in my 45 years supporting our club….an absolute beast in the contest but highly skilled and could knock up getting the footy like few other big men….congratulations on a great career Maysie

A legend of the club. Playing the GF with a torn hammy will be talked about until the end of days. The team walked taller with him on the field.

All the best in retirement
