AFL Draft 2025: Preseason and Rookie Draft

Hoping for a Sinema rookie pick 🤞 Most likely he will have to fight it out in the SSP period

Spoiler alert:

The 2025 AFL Rookie Draft could well be almost a whitewash for Demon fans with no action other than the nomination of Kalani White as a father/son pick.

Good we can focus on the cricket then

Is there any chance they might opt for Noah Yze over Sinema?

FWIW Code Sports have ranked the players most likely to be rookied today in this order.

Ollie Greeves

Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves

Liam Hetherton

Fred Rodrigues

Riley Onley

Tom Burton

Marcus Krasnadamskis

Leon Kickett

Rory Wright

Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier

Tom McGuane

Taj Murray

as i understand it we now have 36 on the senior list and 4 A rookies. so have reached our minimum requirement for senior spots. We could still add up to 2 onto senior list (only via pre-season draft), which would mean we would add no more to rookie list.

Is it possible for someone to jump in and select Kalani before us or is there any kind of restriction on that as he's a father son and been passed up in the draft?

I believe we nominated him before the draft which means he’s now automatic, it gets read out as a pick just for the sake of it.

Jeez there is still a bit of talent available if we wanted to go that way, Kalani +1.

We could pinch Conor Stone from GWS if we rate him. Wonder if there's some unwritten rule of not touching other clubs players they intend to re-list.

Nice of the AFL to time the Rookie Draft to coincide with the lunch break at the cricket.

We only have nominated one selection anyway, that answered my query.

Welcome Riley Onley!!

Didn’t realise how tall he is.

195cm midfielder!

Kalani surely hasn't been left out to dry?

Thought we were taking him today?

Kalani White was announced on rookie list before the rookie draft started.

Thanks for the clarification ditcha!

Footy is weird these days. Our mids are taller than our fwds

lol

We pick Onley ahead of NHH and Greeves - why were those two rated so highly prior to the draft but ultimately overlooked by us (and all)?

Looks like NHH didn’t go to anyone in the end.

I think the Rookie Draft partially coincides with the lunch break in the first test so we can still multitask and focus on both sports.

Apologies - the rookie draft was over before the luncheon interval in the First Test in Perth.

The good news is that we took a wicket at around the time we selected Riley Onley.

Well done to our list management team!

The 2 Tom's from the Jets McGuane and Burton surely will get a train on gig somewhere, Burton in particular if the guy headed further down the highway to Falcons or across the bay to any of those teams in the East he gets drafted.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
