Next Captain? (in a few years)

Absolutely.

You just wouldn’t do it to him.

A lot of media and public speaking involved and they are basically shy, quiet and reserved men.

This often stems from cultural practices which are different from WASP Australian practices. For instance, indirect eye contact is a form of respect in various cultures of different Aboriginal groups.

Kozzie seems confident to me by maintaining his own manner of engagement - but agree that it means he probably would not want to be in the limelight of captaincy and the media duties etc

If Rivers develops greater consistency in his game, which he will have the opportunity to do with more midfield minutes, then he is by far and away the best long term option. I'd make him a co VC with Viney and Lever next year.

Lever... gives him an excellent reason to stay on the park.

Captaincy will prevent him from getting injured?

On that basis, we need to appoint 44 Co-Captains. 😁

If you can have a non playing and playing coach. Why not a non playing team captain. Gus Brayshaw. Come on down. Who says it cannot be done,

And was it Gus at the girls sesssion

See the aflw thread re Brisbane today

In 2027 I’d love to see a leadership group

Rivers C

Disco VC

Lindsey

Langford

And maybe Chandler

Whilst Gawn, Viney, Lever and Steele are on our list to guide them

Disco for me. Good player, seems disciplined and well liked.

When Clarry and Luke Jackson both request to come back next year they can form part of the leadership group but the next captain would have to be Disco or Rivers.

Lever is the obvious choice but needs to get back to being his best

How ajbout Langdon our last winger captain was very good

I’m also thinking Trent Rivers with Langford Lindsay, Chandler, Disco and JvR in the developing leadership group. We currently have a bit of added leadership in the team with Steele joining our ranks and hopefully a fit Lever will also bolster our on field leadership.

I am feeling a bit more bullish about the potential leadership depth within our younger playing group.

How’s JVR going to captain when he’s dropped to the twos 😂

Although his last 18 months have not been his best, it is rivers by a mile for me. I have heard him speak to the media multiple times and he is a clear, articulate, club man. Also, the more I think about it, in quite a few games he has stood up in key moments (even initiating some) which has lead to a surge in performance during a game or quarter. Moving into the midfield also suits.

Lever, Disco & ??? into the leadership group

Gawn and Viney as mentors.

I need to know more about Chandler and the others of the 22-25 yo.

Lots of Trent Rivers suggestions. First step for him is making the step up to the midfield and proving he can play there. His 2025 was ordinary, albeit I recognise the plan changed late for him to move back.

This was our man:

Angus was a professional Australian Footballer for ten years and was in the leadership group throughout the resurgence of the Melbourne Football Club, ultimately winning a premiership in 2021 for the first time in 57 years. Angus excelled in driving elite standards in a high-performance environment to achieve team success, and demonstrated high level leadership, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. Angus owns a small business in the hospitality industry, which is a passion of his.

Clarry has done his dash for me finally, don’t want him back.

Max to play another 5 years then Langford.

No but really I think Disco will eventually be the guy. Personally don't see it with Rivers, maybe as a co-captain.

Melbourne Demons star Max Gawn’s surprising choice for his successor as captain; GWS Giants captain Toby Greene reveals he punched his father after game due to drunken behaviour

While saying he doesn't plan to give it up anytime soon, Max has said he'd if he had to nominate someone to be the next captain, he'd like to see Ed Langdon take over after him

One of Disco, Chandler and Rivers will rightfully be next.
Noted that Melksham on SEN today mentioned Rivers, Disco and JVR.

I'd reward Rivers, he's been loyal and has resisted the lure back home. My VC would be Kolt, I know that is a little controversial, but I love his attack on the ball

I actually think the right time for a change of captaincy was with the entire regime change last year. Even as great of a skipper Max is, it was also under his leadership that it went belly up. As such, a clean break could have worked out.

We need to nail our next captaincy appointment, as I feel there won’t be as much leniency allowed as if we went with a new one this year.

Disco turner, Trent rivers and kozzie co captains

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
