If he was quick as a 194cm midfield ball winner he wouldn’t have been delisted! From what I’ve seen he looks sharp enough around the contest and a good tackler. Looks like he’s getting mobility back that he didn’t have last year. Not so sure how his pace holds up in space. I know I want to make everyone a winger but I’d love to try to develop him on a wing if he has the tank so he can use that height as an extra marking target 4 1 Quote
DubDee 26,674 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 No ANB, Kozzi, McAdam, Spargo still recovering We need George on the list. Harsh on Jai but that’s the reality 1 1 1 Quote
DeeSpencer 26,678 Posted February 15 Author Posted February 15 Tom Edwards looking like a handy 3rd tall for Essendon. Kicked 3 already. Someone go sneak a contract offer down to him after the game 1 Quote

Harsh on Jai but that’s the reality George has done some flashy things And I actually like what I’ve seen but in no way has he impressed enough consistently to be handed a contract purely because we lack a small forward. I think we absolutely need one but also don’t think that necessarily means Roy. Based on talent and merit throughout preseason, Culley gets the contract. *if Melbourne choose to use the pick* 5 Quote
Supreme_Demon 4,143 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Haven't posted in a while, but I am very sad to hear about Shane McAdam's rotten luck getting injured again. I was really hopeful he would have an impact this year. As for who should replace him as the Demon's SSP, I guess we shall wait and see? A few months ago I would of said Roy George. However, now it looks like many of us are leaning towards Jai Culley. I have faith in the MFC list management team. I am sure they are currently having these exact discussions. 1 1 Quote
Gator 18,053 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 (edited) Culley also noted the improvement that came in his 20 metre sprint times: 3.3 seconds in 2021 compared to 3.1 seconds in 2022. Benson said he was technically already a very good runner, with the key to their training being capitalising on those strengths while making small changes - 16 May 2022 That's all I've been able to find on his speed. 3.1 is fine for a 194cm mid. According to Adam Simpson he also ran a 6.03 minutes for the 2km time trial, which is also decent. Edited February 15 by Gator 6 7 Quote

Talk to eagles fans - they'll tell you he's as slow as treacle in space. Nevertheless I'm open to it - 193cm midfielders don't go on trees and I think we need the depth, and he's of the right age/mindset after getting delisted. 2 Quote

As I mentioned in my training notes, the one thing I haven't been able to ascertain is his pace. It hasn't noticeably been an issue around the footy, but I haven't seen him in space. That said, I have seen him streaming into goal and kick a couple from 45 metres and at didn't seem a problem. I've also seen him look good overhead. I might see him on the wide expanses of the G and think to myself, OK - now I know why they didn't want him. But he does a lot right and I love left footers ! And I don't take much notice of random supporters. Ours or others. For instance, Deespencer spends his life telling us players are slow. If they're good enough they're fast enough. If they're not good enough, they're slow. He's looked good against Oliver, Rivers, etc. Edited February 15 by Gator 11 2 Quote

MrFreeze 2,055 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Midfield depth is so important, I hope we sign Culley and have George train on at Casey where can he build fitness and craft. Best of both worlds there imo. 1 1 Quote
Lil_red_fire_engine 11,383 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 We are going into season with Oliver, Trac and Viney to play the main roles as normal. Plus we have a want to give Rivers and Langdon significant minutes in there. Plus we want to rotate Sparrow, Pickett and Langford through there. Unless we get hit with serious injuries again (which is not the current case) how do we think. Culley gets a game. Culley by all reports should be on an AFL list but is it ours? We have lost McAdam and Tholstrup for significant stretches of the year. Spargo is coming from a long way back. Pickett is out for the first 3 and we want him spinning through the middle. We have a gaping hole for a small forward (or two) on the list. I can see that George does some good things but I doubt he is ready for 4 quarter AFL intensity. I would be offering the spot to Jack Henderson before West Coast pounce. He may not have the upside of George but is proven at VFL and more match hardened in my opinion. We looked at him closely with the pick we took AJ with so would not surprise. 5 2 Quote

Fat Tony 5,337 Posted February 15 Posted February 15 You have to trust the club, given they would have all the information, but I think our list needs another fast small forward more than a slow inside midfielder. 4 Quote

He has attributes - he wouldn't be in the realm if he didn't. I'm certainly not against giving him a shot. But a balanced view informed by more than what you have seen - opinions of eagles fans who watched him for 2 or 3 years - is that he is slow. Its not something that remains to be proven. There have been slow champions and he may yet be one. But he is slow. 1 Quote
