Thanks Staff, but it's time for a change.

No il feelings toward him, but it's the area we need change in most.

Its time we had a proper forwards coach teaching our forwards proper leading patterns, structure, blocking etc. The mod-forward connection is not solely on the mids, yes they need to tighten up their delivery but it's not like they're burning teammates leading up to them or into space, they kick to packs because the forwards are stagnant.

Thanks and Ciao mate.

100% the way we move the ball doesn't help the forwardline at all but the amount of times I see our forwards either standing completely still and waiting for the ball to land on their head OR all running back into the goal square rather than spreading and creating options does my head in.

I’d be all for this. Knows his football. Could be a good move for Clarry too. He had similar issues but straightened himself out.

Who were our line coaches in 2021?

Chaplin backs
Yze mids
Stafford forwards & rucks

I believe Stafford got the forwards gig added to his ruck responsibilities in either 20 or 21 when footy departments were slashed as the league adjusted to the impacts of covid on costs & revenues. Can't remember who ran the forwards prior to that

Wasn't he our ruck coach and then transitioned to forward coach?

Lovely guy and coached us to a GF but I agree its time for a change. Maybe someone with a harder edge.

Wasn't it Chaplin initially hired as a forward coach?

Edit

"Recently retired Richmond defender Troy Chaplin has joined Melbourne's coaching panel as an offensive co-ordinator."

That kinda rings a bell but he's had the backline for a long time now. Don't think he was Stafford's immediate predecessor as forwards coach

We made a lot of changes mid season in 2019 before the 2020 cuts. From memory Chaplin went from forwards coach to backline, Rawlings was promoted from Casey to forward coach, and McCartney went from backline to development coach.

Hawkins just retired.  Would bring a wealth of knowledge & experience also.

Stafford has been poor, but half of that is the way Goodwin dictates the ball being moved into the f50, and tbh until that changes the next coach will struggle some too.

Yze 🤣🤣

Coaching our fwd line or lack of a fwd line in the past 3 years would have to one of toughest gigs going

Should we play an injured Brown or T Mac this week? or maybe an 18yo JVR?

maybe convert another defender to a fwd?

So many quality options!

Don’t make Stafford the scapegoat

Mini is contracted but gee whiz I’d be scratching away and what he added to the mix this year. Gus retiring and Oliver’s issues massive headwinds but we went backwards in the middle part of the ground this year (even before KBD game)

Not sure that is Stafford’s fault - Goodwin’s game plan is to create repeat contest deep-ish in F50, not attempt to create space.

Grab a hawthorn assistant and find out what Mitchell puts in their Gatorade, so to speak

I understand that, but our forward line has been incredibly static, particularly when there is a holdup at wing/HB - They don't block/ create space/do multiple leads. I have defended players and coaches on this site many times but I don't see Stafford as the right guy.

I'd happily replace both. Club is in a rut, playing group is falling apart. It can't go on.

He could take the boys out for a few dozen beers after training… Men who drink together play together…

Not a bad shout. Even if it was just to work with our key forwards. We have Petty, JVR, Turner and Jeffo who all seem to have talent but are very green. If we could get them all working well individually and as a group it would be massive for us going forward( no pun intended).

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
