Not even the do gooders of last week can say we've been the better side in this one

Two things late in the last quarter:

  • Stoppage 10 metres out from WCE point post, Oliver handballs to no-one TOWARDS their goal.
  • Petty v McGovern on the wing, absolutely no contest at all. No strength or contest, just a simple mark to McGovern.

My wife, who watches some Dees game, but isn't really into footy, said "it looks like they don't want to play".

Worst I have seen the Dees play since 2019. No intensity or passion at all.

OK just checked the score. What the hell. I know we lost lever but seriously it's west coast.

Who's on waterman?

They’ve had 2 seasons to address our fwd issues with BB & Tmac succumbed to injuries & form yet failed trying to turn defenders & Grundy into fwds & in doing so robbed them of another flag

Spot on, except I'd say it's 3 years we've had to work on an oppo key forward to get them to us, for nadda.

We've played Petty forward when he's a far better back, paid $600k to watch Grundy play VFL, and now are playing BBB and Turner forward simply because there's no one else.

I'd say our window is well and truly shut. One flag during lockdown from the best list we've had in 60 years. So disappointing

The imbalance of our list really showing. We clearly can't trust Fullarton and he's just another break in case of emergency list blogger like Schache.

I’m confused, you say “CLEARLY can’t trust Fullarton”

Based on what ?

He hasn’t been given a chance yet.

This was the game to try him.

Instead they opted for Brown.

”IMHO” that was incompetency from the Selectors.

Im sorry, but max past it?  He has been in career best form and a lock for AA

He doesn't look 100% fit and he will be 34 next year.

Of course he will still dominate in some games but, how much longer can we expect him to keep going?

Wow. A full implosion.

Getting in now so I've spat my dummy already and am not tempted to join in the post-game misery w---.

Stars were flat, and the tail was loooooong.

Passenger culture creeping in.

It may be time to rethink and plan ahead.

Use this season to develop the team of the future.

That includes what are we doing with our coaching staff (starting with the Ruckman who is training our forwards).

I have some hope in our yourn guns like JVR, Taj, Windsor, McVee, Kozzy, Rivers.

Maybe it's just the end of the road for our 2021 players like TMac, BBB, Petty (if his head is already in Adelaide), Salem.

We could use some young talent in the midfield. Max is also starting to look past it, and understandably so, he's carried this team since 2015.

It's gonna be a long season.

Agree with all that except Max still a few more good games in him but the others mentioned on the money. The good thing is the game nearly over so don’t have to listen to any more of this commentary,

Goodwin...  learnings..... none ..

[censored]...we're bathwater drinking.... nicey nicey.... pretenders.

Well done Simpson..   kudos

[censored] hell Ben Brown can you at least provide a wimper!?

Our whole forward line, Fritsch included, have provided absolutely no defensive pressure.

Goes straight in and straight back out.

Career best form and best in the league. Im not talking about age ect.  You've lost it if you think he looks slow and past it

Agreed.

Although Tommy has had a very good year down back.

It's our fwd line excluding Fritta that just lacks a Darling type player.

Add now our mids look suspect.

JV must be injured.

The premiership window is closing fast if it ain't after tonight.

Our fwd lines not going to change.

Our mids might

We’ve changed, for the worse. Attempted to reverse engineer something like 2020 Richmond and haven’t added the list pieces to fill the gaps for where the game is going

And that's the gameplan in a nut shell.

Those disparaging the Club Coach and team can get back under the rock they came from.

Based on never picking him when we have one ruckman every single week.

Not a hard one to follow.

Our best forward def pressure was trio of Spargo anb kozzy doing the business

injuries and other reasons have meant we haven’t been able to run this this season

LoLoLoL Max been our best player all year, has one quiet game and he's getting past it.

not often we concede 100 points.

a day to forget

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
