If he plays half back where does he get his touches out the back? Level 4 row DD?

To me that means having Fullarton playing at least one of the two games with the hope that Gawny can have a bit of a rest in one.

If Fullarton was to be trialled the opportunity was last night. Funnily enough you may see Verral as the second ruck based on Casey performance

I’m not dropping him, he’s competing well imo. Club thinks so too, he’s vital up there.

Reward will come, not sure taking him back to Casey will help.
I saw him lead well numerous times and made space out the back and was either ignored or ball landed at his bootlaces. Some better delivery will help.

This! People are forgetting that Petty had an extremely interrupted pre season.  I'm surprised he's even on the park. Yes, his form hasn't been great but watching the replay he had a 'nearly' game. Maybe his foot is shot. Dunno. But if fit we must persevere. Went to watch Casey yesterday.  Fullarton definitely shows promise but very lightweight.  I wouldn't fancy going in with him and youngsters Turner and JVR against an experienced Geelong defence. Throw in the fact that for the most part delivery into the forward line last night was atrocious,Petty stays for me.

But it’s realistic.

We go with just 2 talls and Fritsch the Cats can play Henry, SDK and Kolo on them.

Got to at least put out a line up that has a chance in the air.

Agree there's plenty of criticism of Petty, who is out of form, and even JVR in the post-match thread who is competing very well in the air. But how and why do people think Fritsch and Disco get off the chain? Maybe it's because Petty and JVR are doing the heavy lifting.

I don't mind your suggestion of Hore in and agree that's the only change I'd consider but I'm happy to persevere with Woey.

Not sure why people are picking Fullarton to play forward.  Let's face it, the vast majority of ruckman are very ordinary forwards.  People think ruckman are qualified to play forward because they're tall.  There's more to playing forward than just height.

Out

Petty has to get dropped, can’t stand his body language atm.

Billings turned the ball over twice with simple kicks for two Richmond goals, that two goals out of five

Woey very one paced & not a backman maybe sub

In

Fullarton - can help Max in the ruck & can’t be any worse than Petty as a forward

Hunter- can’t believe I’m saying this

Laurie- for a full game

Some here believe Billings was very good. Probably a good ten minutes in the third helped us but I thought his use of the ball for the rest was poor.

Fullarton’s a decent leading forward who’s ordinary in the ruck!

Tall mid/forward flanker is about his best position.

Not tall enough up forward for me but I don't see what options we have after Petty's performances.

Can't be any worst than Petty. That's a no brainier. And we get some ruck skills thrown in. It's now or never with Fullerton. I mean normally Petty would get the benefit of the doubt if he'd played a few bad ones. But they were more than bad I'm afraid. He's a proven quality player that either fluked a couple of very good forward games and or suffering from a clear lack of pre season conditioning. It's tempting to put him in the backline but Tmac deserves to stay.

No change.

cats very experienced led by Stewart down back; keep Petty in. Give him Roo and Turner another game together.

McAdam vs Blues when he’s played a full game at VFL.

Hore, McA, Fullerton emergencies

Hunter to come but not yet. I’d like to see him and Melky plus Bowey plays games in second half season. Finals time I’d prefer them to Woey, Laurie etc

Forward line still a work in progress but it looks better when Brown is playing and for whatever reason Petty looks bereft of confidence.

If not for a backline we dont look a top 8 side atm, still a few things to work on.

The Cats will play keepings off. Take it to the bank. The key for us is to stop that and put pressure on the ball carrier. They switch at every opportunity and try to control tempo. We have to cover the ground well to contain them

The Richmond game was scrappy and we turned the ball over a lot but the Cats will be a different stye of game

One thing Goodwin is good at is ensuring that the first halves of games are a scrap and an arm wrestle. He likes to stay in games for long periods before grinding out wins.

Geelong are totally beatable and we will have to play well to do it. A number of players need to lift but most of all our midfield.

Our backline this year has been awesome and deserve a huge amount of credit for keeping us on track while our mids have gone missing

Macadam plays tall and is a good aerialist

So we will have two talls in Turner and Roo

And two medium tall good marks in Fritsch and Mcadam

Kozzie, Chandler and ANB at their feet

Out Petty, JVR.

In Tommo, McAdam

Time to move Tommy back to CHF, the veteran  is in fine touch, and is a proven goal kicker, and decent ruckman, to replace JVR.

Tommo to replace Tommy Mac down back, losing nothing there.

Not a huge fan of McAdams but happy to have a look, replacing Petty, losing nothing there.

I think Hunter comes in for Woewodin. Windsor goes back and Hunter on the wing.

Petty will get better at marking and goal kicking and we need to back him in.

Not the worst of ideas. If Windsor could hold a position at half back he could be a real rebounding weapon. On the other hand that's one less player delivering quality ball into the forward line

Windsor has regressed a bit the last two games. (Not suggesting he be dropped.)

And disagree a bit on Hunter. While he doesn’t have the penetration of Windsor, he makes marginally better decisions and is still a reasonable kick. Having a left sided winger is another advantage.

Zero chance Tomlinson comes in. Be very surprised if they risk even though his cameo performance was outstanding yesterday.  Could be the difference maker in the forward line eventually.  Bailey for Woewodin is possible.  The only other change could be if they feel need to give Windsor a rest. If that is the case it's Hunter for me.

Windsor to sub.

Petty does need to show something or he is in big trouble, but i honestly have never thought he was a forward

Well said but with respect if he's fit then he's gotta offer more. I don't agree with others that he competed well last night, he was outmarked by his direct opponent often and couldn't get the ball to ground, yes the delivery was horrible but he needs to impact the contest. He'd had a rough or barely any pre season I get it and I know there aren't other options however if there were, the reality is that he loses his forward spot based on these performances.

I wouldn't drop him, absolutely not. However if he isn't going down back then he needs to find a away into these games other than a marks and goals forward. You can bet Chris Scott will be looking to exploit this area next week.

Will continue to back him, we need him to be on next week.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
