Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I think there's two issues, 1. a lot of our mids haven't been great at hitting targets regularly and 2. our forwards aren't great at creating these areas of space by working together as a unit.

Been that way for 2 years....

100% agree. All those guys are either above average or elite kicks.

The issue we have is that our biggest ball winners, Trac, Viney and Oliver are probably below average kicks.

Gawn also needs to focus on handballing off whenever he gets a mark, especially in the backline!

Duck your head now for saying that, some here think there is nothing wrong with our setups and execution.

On the kicking it's been a problem especially the depth of kick to a player on the run good observation.

Thanks, DJ, but I meant have we ignored (or missed hitting) uncongested areas that we've created?

Those clear spaces are usually out wide on the wings. That's the longest path to goal. Oppositions will often just concede that space in an effort to flood back. When we eventually go long into congestion, if we don't score then the ball rebounds out with space everywhere for the opposition to spread into and use.

The last few years we haven't had the foot skills required to make the most of our entries. Our defenders have been incredible and made our game plan look more sustainable than it really is IMO. We need to move the ball forward quicker and cleaner. That's the crux of it. Easier said than done!

Pretty well said and part of that problem is we don't transition the ball quick enough, we go across the ground but have to hold it a up until players run to position to receive it its not a natural thing to do.

I hope they are developing that part of the game as it does open up the forward line.

It seems to me that no matter which way we attack, we get plenty of opportunities to score. It's just that we don't convert opportunities to goals often enough.

Let's not overthink these strategies. What we really need is an on field mentor to guide our kicks at goal. I nominate ANB to fill this role as he already speaks to the players.

Feels like Groundhog Day with all the fwds still injured, even if some get back for round 1 they going to be severely underdone. JVR going to need to do something special if we going to even match last year

Anyone know what is going on with Jefferson at the moment?

Follow-up question - I was doing some browsing and digesting and looking at match-ups for our early season opponents and took a closer look at Jeremy Finlayson's numbers and role - would it be fair to say that Finlayson is a rough template of what we are hoping to see Jefferson become for us over the next few seasons?

I'm hoping he becomes Jeremy Cameron like.

Mostly invisible when it’s hot but not a bad second ruck? No, I doubt that’s the aim.

Specialist goal kicker in the Fritsch mold who hopefully adds a contested/structural tall role as he bulks up over time is surely the aim. Just might be a slow build

Ha! I do appreciate your brutal candour much more when it is aimed at Port players.

At least I didn't used Eric Hipwood as an example of type - that's just not polite around dinner time.

In a triangle where each corner is one of Tom Hawkins, Oscar Allen and Charlie Curnow, where would Jefferson be? 😁

Or is he basically Jack Watts if given proper time to develop as a forward?

I kind of think Hipwood is underrated now. He wasn't good for a long time despite the media pumping him up, then the media turned on him and since then he's kind of being pretty solid by upping his contested work.

Maybe Oscar Allen of those 3 but Watts with more time to develop and also a more natural leap and overhead mark is probably realistic.

I think he'll have to either pressure at ground level and/or find some easy footy up the ground and use his skills to really make an impact. He needs a few strings to his bow to cover for not being the tallest, quickest or most physical.

Reports of him laying a few tackles at a recent training session are positive.

Surely it’s MJ’s marking and kicking skills that set him apart. Possibly leading a big asset also.

If you look at the second photo of Jefferson on 12th Gallery you can see where his strength will be.  He has really long arms and takes the ball well out in front.   He doesn't try to Klunk it, but more with soft hands like Fritsch.  Even from that photo you can see a defender having trouble trying to spoil.

Compare it with most photos of JVR where the ball is taken more above his head.  For him it works because of his leap and crash into opponents, but also makes it easier for a defender.

I must point out that 10 seconds reflection allows me ample time to push Hi Honey Ho, The Real Thing and Gypsy Queen forward... A long way forward. 68 next week is my only excuse.

Really?

I had well and truly forgotten that.

But i do remember it included non musical samples, which was very rare in 1968. Maybe Eno was doing it? But few others, not even the Beatles.

Well ahead of its time - such sampling has become a staple of electronic and dance music (i'm a sucker for such samples, partic spoken works ones).

It's strange Molly didn't produce more records.

Yes, really (if you can believe Wikipedia):

"The children's choir singing toward the end was sourced from an archive recording of a WWII Hitler Youth choir singing "Die Jugend Marschiert" (Youth on the March) and the song concludes dramatically with the children's choir shouting "Sieg Heil!" immediately followed by the cataclysmic sound of an atomic bomb explosion."

He can also be heard on the recording. From Wikipedia: 'an ominous spoken-word "buyer beware" message (suggestive of the LSD 'trip' experience) which was, in fact, Meldrum's heavily filtered voice reading aloud from the product disclaimer on an Ampex recording tape box.'

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
