Vale Ronald Dale Barassi - Rest in Peace

Damn.. RIP RB. Hope you’re up there having a beer with my Pa and all the other old boys who made it there before you. Condolences to the Barassi family.

Wow. Took myself off everything for 5 hours to enjoy life a bit and now come back to this. I'm devastated absolutely devastated. This is as big as Mr Football.

I don't know what else to say. RIP Ronnie ❤️

We sit under one of his signed jumpers at the local every Tuesday night.

Won’t be quite the same this week.

RIP great man.

My dad barracked for Carlton and my older brothers barracked for Essendon and Fitzroy. I chose the Demons all those years ago for one reason.

The great RDB !!!!

RIP Ron.

  • Whispering_Jack changed the title to Vale Ronald Dale Barassi - Rest in Peace

Rest in peace Ron, will shed a tear tonight

My first Melbourne footy jumper sported the number 31. So glad he saw us deliver another flag. RIP great man

This is a [censored] house week for all Melbourne supporters.

On top of everything else this is the worst news.

A great man and a football legend

RIP RDB

His legacy will be enduring.

Really could have used one of his famous sprays at three-quarter time last night.

😓

Reunited with Norm Smith.

Only 2 days ago there was an article on him in the Herald Sun saying he'll support the demons.

A shame we couldn't send him off with a win

RIP Mr Barassi

Chompers Jones on 9 news saying the cup should be named after Ron. Totally agree.

Vale Ronald Dale Barassi. Lucky to have met Ron (and Robbie 😢) at a family day years ago. Generous with his time and showed genuine care and interest for every supporter there. Part of the fabric of our club, so glad he got to see us win one in ‘21.

This week can seriously go to hell. So much damned heartbreak.

The 2021 flag is even more important now. Forever grateful he got to see it.

Devastated.  What a horror weekend.

My late dad was a Blues man but his favourite player was Ron at Melb and he was thrilled when he came over.

Played a year behind Ron in the Preston scouts.  Or mighr have been the other way around!  A long time ago now.

Much admired and very much revered by everyone at Preston.  Dad always said he was leaps & bounds ahead of anyone else he saw playing at the time and super fierce.

Dad and a few mates met RDB at Princes park.  They (pretty sure it was dad) carried his gladstone bag from his car to the Carlton rooms where he gave his intro speech to the players.  The old Preston boys weren't allowed in and could only listen within earshot from outside.

Dad stayed in touch through the social club there and even beat the great man in a social club table tennis tournament  GF one evening.

Ron wasn't happy, competitive beast in all areas.  We still have dad's tiny pewter trophy from that night many decades ago.

My mum will be upset with this also.  He always remembered her flaming red hair when i met him in the street, at his pub or on one of our best & fairest nights when he was coaching us back in the day.  Always very amiable and seemed down to earth / cheery.

Mum took this studio photo of him in 1963 prior to some sort of OS trip (mum says to the U.S.).  Courtesy of the Australian Sports Museum website.

The tribute last night probably no coincidence?

R.I.P. Ron and commiserations to family and friends.

Vale ‘Mr Football’.  A true legend of the game, and a great citizen to boot.  Will never be forgotten.  Deserves a State Funeral.  ❤️💙

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
