I know today is depressing but I donโ€™t want his performance forgotten about amidst the doom and gloom. Magnificent last night he can hold his head high. Keep his nerve when all around him was a collective clusterf. Curnow was a non factor thanks to him.

Has been AA standard the past 4 years

Wanted him as captain a couple of years back. We know he let himself down badly with that incident with Melks but boy he has turned it around.

I think heโ€™s the best traded in player weโ€™ve ever had

Will go down as a Dees legend come what may.

I love your work Maysey.

(mods: not sure if there's an old appreciation thread for May so feel free to merge if there is)

ย

Was in beast mode last night. Completely murdered Curnow.

Hold your head high Maysie, you deserved better.

He kicked one goal. But May has been fantastic as has Lever.ย

He is somehow underrate. Which is laughable because he is probably the best FB in the game right now.ย
His sheer will to win is what makes him a joy to watch.ย

We are very lucky to have him, but he is also coming to the end of his career and not winning another flag without him and Gawn still playing top football would be a total waste. We wonโ€™t be able to replace those two.ย

I think Curnow scored one, still a mighty effort.

He was single-handedly winning to game for us last night.ย

Great thread.

He was a colossal down back. I actually feel for the big fella because they were doing their job perfectly down back but yet our forwards let us down.

The hurt and anger on his face last night was very evident.

Love your work Maysey

HTF AA selectors determine that Weitering is a better player than May is beyond a joke

And incredible game by an incredible player. ย Absolutely dominant and inspiring (again).
ย

Heโ€™ll be 32 at the start of next season, so weโ€™ll need to make the absolute most of his remaining time with us.

Also need to identify his successor to work closely under him. ย With Petty now seemingly earmarked as a key forward, that successor is worryingly unclear.

ย

Has been a magnificent competitor for us. May be 1 more year left. As for May the demons might be in their last year next year as well.

Still the best key defender in the game in my eyes. He was single handedly keeping us in front in the final term.

Another outstanding game from the best full back in the league.ย  Led our defence superbly.ย  Certainly not the fault of the defenders that we are now in the off-season.

Steven May has been brilliant.

Will probably still feel as gutted as the rest of us about last night. He loves the Melbourne Football Club.

Hopefully he finishes again in the top 5 in the Melbourne Demons Best & Fairest.

Should of been All Australian Full Back and hopefully will be next year.

ย

May was elite last night, a real privilege and joy having him in our team.

Hopefully all the young defenders are taking notes from him.

And Hopefully Mayzie has a nice rest and incident free off-season! aha

Heโ€™s probably our most consistent finals player. He was amazing. If we had won that, the media would have been talking about his performance all week.

I only wish he was 5 years younger.

Time to have an honest discussion about May.

I want to preface that I still love everything he brings from a leadership perspective, and will go down as one of the best backmen to lace them up for us. However, his drop off has been stark this season. He's now getting beaten most weeks, looks completely irrelevant when the ball hits the deck, and in being frustrated with getting beaten is giving away stupid frees that are hurting us.

He clearly won't be dropped but IMO we need to start thinking of the May contingency plan as the cracks in his game are getting bigger and bigger in 2025.

So we are ignoring all his clearing spoils last night? and keeping Waterman to 3, lets say really 2 as he got a bull&*%& head high for one of his goals.

Against Lynch last week he had 20 possies and 10 marks over 3 and a bit quarters. I'm also convinced May is playing a bit injured like Max was early rounds when he could not jump.

He doesnt look physically right but is still a massive presence for us down back.

He's played 5 of the 8 games stop start style, so lets give him some continuity and see how he goes.

He's certainly not the player he was, surely even the most one-eyed Demon would admit that.

You used to be able to play him on talls or smalls but now when the ball hits the deck his lack of agility really gets exposed.

I'm now more comfortable with Tom McDonald in one-on-one situations than May which I never thought would be the case.

May has been on a steep decline for at least 12 months, and the end is coming very quickly. His best is still very good, but his worst is really poor, particularly when he doesn't have confidence in his body.

If we think Adams is the answer as a replacement, he needs to be getting AFL games alongside May and McDonald this year.

I think you're right. For a very long time I've thought Petty was the ideal replacement, Turner being a good (and probably more physically robust) replacement for Lever eventually. If Petty still has a desire to return to South Australia that throws a spanner in the works.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

Weโ€™re back! That was fun. The Mighty Deesโ€™ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commandingย 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
