Before that turnover, Lever had an intercept mark just inside our D50. Instead of looking for a short kick to a player nearby (and consume more of the clock) he went long bomb down the line.

Lever's a bit of a paradox - has incredible insight as to what the ball's going to do ... except when he's kicking it. Easily the worst decision-maker in the backline.

The Lever short option was to Rivers and at the game I was screaming at him to take it. (Surprisingly he ignored me😂).

All the talk about sack the coach: the players adore him - that's why we have so many champions on long term contracts. A new coach might not get the same response.

I just don’t see it as the failure you do. Losses compared to what? Winning the flag? Last year we were cooked all over the ground. This year we were cooked in one third of the ground. Not making excuses, I’d like to see us work some areas of our game out that have been a problem for some time. But we have the players we have and you can’t always get who you want in to the side. The fact we should have won both games hurts but is also really promising. With no forward line and very few ball users we should be in a prelim. Draft/trade well this year and we could find something that makes a difference. You could have judged many coaches too early. Top 4 three tears in a row is tough to do. Winning flags is very hard

We were 7 points up with a minute to play…

Good Sides don’t lose from there.
We have lost 4 Finals in 2 years on the MCG. That is a Failure, and big changes must occur over Summer

Lost at selection as in we had no forward line to select. The game looked a lot like a dominant team with no forward line

Schache was a good choice

Tmac has been a great played but he seems cooked. I though he was reasonable last night in terms of competing - but by the 4th quarter he was clearly gone.

Even then they didn’t bring on Schache!

So why have they given him another yr extension?… he’s a list killer. I only hope they think they can trade him for something.

End of yr we clean out Tmac, BBB and Schache. We have a couple of kids at Casey. I think we bring in a mature fwd … who??

It’s insurance, ideally you never use it but you pay it every year.

Goodwin to transition into the role of runner (keep him around the club, provides good vibes)

I don’t think I’ll ever get over that Viney turn over. I’ve watched it 4 times already and I can’t understand it. He wasn’t even under pressure. I’ll have nightmares about that for years.

If he had kicked it on the full, got caught holding the ball, a million other things and I think we would have held up. I just can’t believe it.

What the hell are you doing to yourself watching it four times.

Our game plan whilst it keeps us always with a chance of winning it does the same for our opponents. We get away with it against lesser sides, but  against the better slides, well we all are seeing what happens if we don't take our chances.

I thought we panicked a bit in the last quarter. The fear of losing got the better of us.lo

there’s lots to work on

This. Need to improve our forward half and get distance on our opponents like we did in ‘21.

Last night felt inevitable, I’ve never seen us be so undisciplined, make so many crazy errors, ignore team mates in better positions and generally gift a lesser team a ridiculous win. I really hope Carlton win or go close against Brisbane as maybe that might rub in what we just blew.
We need some fresh eyes in the coaching box…I’d be offering Justin Leppitsch whatever it takes to come on board. We need a replacement brewing for May, another forward and some elite ball users. I really hope Woewodin and Howe can replace one or both of our wingers. Langdon has fallen off a cliff and Hunter, while serviceable needs upgrading. If TMac and Brown remain on the list I’ll cry and we need to find Max some help. I still think we have an excellent list and I’m bullish for the next few years but jeez the last 2 weeks hurt. Onwards and upwards. Go Dee’s…..and remember gifting finals to your enemies is supposed to hurt.

I guess my one worry in this homogeneous world where everything is seen as a transaction is do the players really really really want it. Would they walk over coals for each other and success. Or is making pasta on your socials and shaving your balls enough. That’s the question that concerns me with this team.

Re hurting the enemy: you no doubt saw the result of Christian's Pontifications today: 3 Demons fined, Pickett suspended for bumping poor Crippsy, a bump that slide due to momentum and size discrepancy onto poor Cripps's nose - what was described as recently as last Wednesday as a Football Act. And, instead of Mc Govern being fined for staging, Pickett gats fined for 'Rough Play'.

I ask, Your Honor, what is your point?????

Strange things happen in sport. No one does what we did in one half of a grand final either

If Grundy was the sub ,He could have gone into the ruck in the last quarter.Take McDonald off and put Max into the forward line.

Christ I and a few others said the same thing!! BRAINLESS team selections

it’s not the coach

We’re ranked 16th or something with ball in hand. That’s the coach

Don't forget we were ever so close to a monumental choke in that game as well.
Make no mistake, we was staring down the slippery slope there for awhile.

For those who haven't seen it please look up Russel Robertsons post on Facebook and Insta. He made me feel a whole lot better with a calm measured assessment of the season and the need to have team stability and continuity which we didn't have as well as the new blood injected into the team. He said everything I hope Goodwin would say but didn't. Well done Robbo, he is hurting and details how much it hurt losing finals in his day.

Disappointed that all Goodwin could offer is one of his motherhood statements about dealing with adversity and learnings, I am so sick of hearing his corporate speak.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
