The number of injuries and disruptions to our forward line has been ridiculous. We managed to cover very well in the circumstances but in finals against the best it’s very difficult to win playing the likes of tmac and smith. It’ll be some effort if we manage to win from here given the forward challenges we’ll have to overcome

    Despite my self imposed media ban, I heard a bit of crunchtime in the car this morning - All out criticism of the Dee’s forward movement  - personnel, strategy and recruitment all got a serve.
    They have written us off , while simultaneously championing the purity of the football act by Maynard, him having no case to answer (incredulously, I’ve heard several times, Brayshaw didn’t help himself to avoid impact).

    We will go through the week with hype continuing to build for Carlton.

    I don’t mind it.

    Maynard will go. Whatever those imbeciles say is irrelevant. I’ve also switched off footy media after the loss as can’t deal with all the piffle.

    it can be done and has been done. We're still a tough proposition for Carlton and Brisbane (if they win their QF). We have the grit and resilience to stay in those games and win.

    I just don't know if we can kick a score to win. where are the goals going to come from?

    You should also include the doggies in 2026 who won and had to play 4 finals

    Geelong in 2020 lost their QF, but won through to the GF and were in front in the third quarter.

    Sydney in 2016 lost their QF, but won through to the GF and were 1 point down with 10 minutes to go.

    No, none of those sides won the flag, but they all got close enough that it's not in my view impossible (adding in the two Dogs runs from 7th to the GF, and of course the five premiers who lost their QF).

    I wonder if any of those teams also lost players in the way we have been losing them? .  If it was purely a form issue  I’d still be confident , but the injuries, suspension etc  is just proving too much I think.

    Were are a dangerous when our game is up and going, but at times we seem a bit mentally meek and happy with the recent flag.

    Yep Goody has been here before in 2022 and was a straight sets exit. May sound negative & sure always a change to beat Carlton as we do have the skill, but unless we get good quality inside 50s vs the bombing the result want change

    You just have to see how we started the game on Thursday, even before Brayshaw's injury they looked flat.

    We're a team that doesn't make things easy for ourselves. Losing the QF and doing it the hard way is just par for the course for us. We'll beat Carlton in a tough slog. Playing away at the Gabba will actually suit us. We'll play with more freedom I think. And then its destiny against the pies in the granny.

    Absolutely we did. Took us 45 minutes to get going. Unacceptable in a QF.

    That's right. It felt like 5 mins until we even took the ball inside 50. It would have been great to lock it in our 50 more in that quarter.

    Gazza spoke about this issue three years ago when we were having trouble finishing our work off coming inside 50 and / or missing opportunities to connect in general as we transistion the ball out of D50...

    For the last two seasons i've watched a number of our players completely ignore an open/ better option as they come out of D50 or approach our 50.

    It's the usual culprits and the ones i've noticed who are regular offenders (i'm sure they're not alone) are...

    Tracc, Clarry, Lingers, Chandler & Rivers.

    To a lessor extent Viney, Hunter & Gus. They sometimes lower their vision and spot an option, then attempt to kick on 45s occasionaly but it's just that they aren't necessarily very good at it and often miss the target that will sometimes result in a slingshot turnover.

    Sometimes Viney, Hunter & Tracc will hit targets so not all their efforts are a dead loss.  I'm sure Gus & Clarry also connect on odd occasions but i doubt their numbers would be all that great comparatively speaking.

    Tracc & Clarry our two biggest serial offenders.  Not enough poise and too often just play on immediately without assessing / scanning the field ahead, even from a mark or free kick, and just kick / bomb blindly up the field or deep inside 50.

    I can't recall which game it was, earlier this seaaon or late in 2022 but we basically lost the game through our own ineptitude with players being very open (even through the corridor) as we transistioned out of D50 being completely ignored both by hand and foot.  The two major offendors in that match were Chandler & Rivers.

    When i say open i'm talking overlap open either laterally or forward of the carrier being completely missed / ignored.  Instead we'll just kick straight down the line to a 1 v 1 or worse.... a 1 v 2 or 3!  Killing off the chance of quick  overlap run through the corridor and a lethal entry inside 50.

    Same with open targets up the field or off the line on 45s who are obvious better options if we look for them (scaning the field instead of just looking straight ahead) and (at least) kick it to their advantage.

    Instead we are ignoring them (or don't look for them!) and just blindly kick down the line to a 1 v 1 or worse... an outnumbered contest.

    Since 2021 we seem to have regressed in general play and are now playing more like we did in 2020.

    Unfortunately the Red Mist appears to be back.

    I'm not saying every player should be perfect either.  Much more difficult on the field looking at options from the grass vs sitting in the stands from a height or when watching the box.  All players miss better opportunities from time to time.  Always room for improvement though and for some players alot of improvement needed!

    And this could indicate it's a coaching issue.

    Unless we think our players are rogue and don't listen to their coaches and do whatever they want on the field.

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
