Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

This whole thread was so nice to read.  Especially everyone being so negative about the first half, just like always for Demonland!  Feels like things being taken seriously.  Also really happy to see people respecting Paxy!!

Great start to the season ❤💙  unfortunately this week has been a lot of work so I didn't make it to Melbourne, but have caught up after finally wrapping up some client work.

So nice to see the girls flying along early in the season and being responsive to momentum during the game!

*cough*

Not quite?

Yeah, DP. I usually don’t like the GameDay thread negativity but like you I didn’t mind it yesterday because it shows there’s the same level of passion and respect as there is for the M’s.

Same can’t be said for some folks though…

Yesterday I was walking through Royal Park on my way to Ikon when a couple of golfers came along (I’m head to toe in red n blue) and one of them says, “there’s no footy on this weekend.” I said, “yeah there is.” He looks puzzled. I said, “Dees vs Pies, AFLW season opener.” He laughs and says, “oh, the micky mouse comp.” I just eyeballed him. He says, “what?!” I said, “I’m just wondering who ties your shoelaces for you of a morning.” We both look down at his feet. His shoes have Velcro, no laces. I said, “Never mind. Question answered.”

The score thus far…

WCW  1

Knuckle-dragger  0

I told the other DA members about this when I got to Ikon. I was waiting for the usual “oh WCW, be careful, your smart-mouth will get you into trouble one day!” But as one of them said, the beauty of a burn on a person whose IQ is in single digits is that they don’t realise it’s a burn. 😁

Also, I have some sneakers with Velcro fasteners myself. Difference is… I can tie shoelaces.  😂

To say we’re all hanging out to hear about young Ms Binners reaction is the understatement of the weekend I reckon.

Ms Binners jnr loved it.

I went with a mate who has a young son who is dead keen on footy, but i think i'm right in saying that was the first AFLW game they had both seen. Both loved it.

And i loved it - such an enjoyable vibe and atmosphere and like i said about the two finals there last year felt like a throw back in terms of going to the footy. To be clear though, i really loved the footy played, not just the 'vibe'.

Ms binners take was the atmosphere was terrific, and  much nicer vibe than at the men's footy. She said she loves that women fans are right into it and cheer and carry on, but it all feels so much less aggro than when blokes, including me, are yelling and screaming.

The AFL is really in danger of killing the golden goose.  So short sighted to see it as the AFL subsiding AFLW.

In reality, over the journey, it will be AFLW that, perhaps not subsidize the AFL but protects it's future.

Lets face it, Aussie rules is an indigenous game in what is really a very small market. The only way it survives over the next 50 years is continuing to grow its audience.

A unique element of AFL is how many women watch it compared to say soccer in Europe.

Participation not only grows the pool of elite players it also grows the audience. Every young women who plays any footy, no matter what level they get to, are going to be AFL fans for life.

It has ever been thus - play footy as kid, dream of playing on the MCG in Spring, give up on those dreams and watch footy for the rest of your life.

Princess park is just the perfect place for AFLW. The stand and surrounding parkland protect from the wind, the surface is like a golf fairway and the ground is a touch smaller than most.

Everyone is raving about how skillful we were in the 3rd quarter. That doesn't happen in the howling wind down at Casey

It's a total no brainer - invest in the infrastructure there, make it AFLW HQ and have a game there every single Friday night of the AFLW season.

Make it an event vibe like last night, with a real focus on stuff for kids to do - so great to see so many kids just having a ball.

Every fan knows there is game there on a Friday night, so just rock up ad know they'll see some good footy. Public transport is brilliant. The shorter quarters mean it is not such a late night for families and the vibe is really family friendly.

All the Vic clubs would look forward to their turn for the Friday night special and turn up.

Telecast it live on 7. Every Friday night.

Make it part of the fabric of a Melbourne weekend at this time of year.

Brilliant. And the bolded is really the stuff people don’t understand as much as I wish. It’s HALF the human market, FFS, absolutely ripe to become more attracted and more fully invested than ever before (which is already a lot). My optimist hope is that they couldn’t stuff it up they tried, but as you say, with the money available, they could be doing so much more, and faster and smarter (just like those fabulous Dees women last night).

Who kicked the goal over their head and anyone remember what quarter it was? I remember it was up Royal Parade end but that's about it. I'd like to see it again, it was pretty great in person

watched the Lions Tiges game. tough hard contest with tiges winning it late.

looks like they could be a big improver this year. few teams beat the Lions on their patch.

As per usual the standard of umpiring in the aflw is atrocious.

And Abbey Holmes commentating is getting on my nerves. saccharine sweet platitudes just like cameron Ling

And adding onto to this, pure anecdata, but plenty of AFLW fans I know aren't traditional footy followers. AFLW was the start of their interest in the sport. Or it was their way back into it after disconnecting from the men's game (for a wide array of reasons).

There is a certain level of creep factor to what I am about to say but it’s needed for the comp to get to that ‘analytical level’ we all want it to get to… Eliza M is much stronger through the hips and thighs now with her time in the gym. Very powerful, and I don’t know if that is what they make you do when you break your back but it’s just really good for her footy.

In one of the interviews going round this week Eliza mentioned that she'd "had running taken away" from her even before the accident, which suggests that building a stronger frame was already the focus. Obviously this recovery was not the way she'd have wanted to do it but can definitely already see the results Friday night.

A coupla other points of interest:

After that "16-point" game, we've drawn level with Collingwood in the McClelland Trophy ($1 mil for the best-performed club across M and W).

Screenshot2023-09-04at1_40_30pm.png.f99ecd3174627b6717520faff7040c7a.png

And here's a look at the average Round 1 aggregate scores per game from Season 1 AFLW until now. There might have been a few more quarter length changes in there somewhere. Round 1 is typically a low-scoring round for AFLW, with the middle of the H&A season usually the peak once teams have found cohesion but before teams have dropped off.

Of course, scoring is aided by there being more one-sided contests as teams were added, though the new teams also score less themselves. The difference this season might be the longer quarters.

not good news re tv ratings: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/scoring-crowds-rise-for-aflw-but-tv-audience-keeps-sliding-20230903-p5e1ll.html

what i'm curious to see - and @binman might appreciate this - is what the wagering turnover is on it this season

even the women's world cup was very poor for the bookmakers, and if aflw doesn't convert interest in bookies then the broadcasters will vote with their $$ and descope broadcast

It's amazing the perception still out there on sookbook with nuffies banging on about the poor standard of play.

I think the AFL will have to keep pushing highlight packages showing the great passages of play that are a lot more common now with the women's game.

If the crowds keep growing like they are, eventually it's got to convert to more people following the league and tuning in.

I guess nuffies will always be nuffies.

Great post DiO.
Do you think the McClelland is worth a topic in itself? Could keep an eye on it during the next ten weeks. Shades of the Death riding Freo thread having the Pies, Port and Brissy all lose this weekend was handy.

Since it's a joint trophy for men's and women's, perhaps it should be on the main board?

Dees win by 42 points.

Beat a team tipped as a challenger.

Kicked the last 9 goals of the game unanswered.

But only Kate Hore was good enough to be in the team of the week.

Despite the premiership win, many Dees players imv are underrated still.  At our competitors peril !!!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
