Dangerfield Approached to Join AFL Commission

Geelong already have too much influence.ย

Nothing says jobs for the boys like "football" experience

ย

And the "protection" of Geebung will continue. Oh God spare me. Is there no end.

I don't mind it. Always been a mature voice with the Players Association. His guest commentary on Channel Seven is pretty insightful. Better choice than a pale, stale, male 60 year old company board appointment.

It's unpaid and would conflict him out of most jobs (including media) in football

Leigh Matthews discussed on radio a few weeks back how he had been approached and what it would have meant for him at the time

Even better

Patrick Dangerfieldโ€™s resume reads

- channel 7 commentatorย

- Geelong COO

- Local heroย

- AFL commissionerย

- Part time footballerย

- Proud owner of large shorts and small eyesย

First it was Steve Hocking who had significant influence in changing all these rules in the draft and free agency.

Then went back to Geelong he went to Celebrate his Clubs continued ability to keep topping up.ย

Now Dangermouse friggen spare me!

No conflict of interest at all.

I didnโ€™t know the AFL Commission was funded with government moneyโ€ฆ

I donโ€™t mean to sound condescending about professional athletes, because itโ€™s a highly specialised skill and requires a lot of commitment, but how can a multi billion dollar entity seriously think itโ€™s a good idea to put someone on the commission who literally has no experience with administration?

An advisory role, sure. But on the actual commission? Thatโ€™s nuts. The guys never had another job, let alone the experience required.

Nah, that won't be a conflict of interest at all

To be fair to Dangerfield, across the many years heโ€™s been discussed on various threads on Demonland, heโ€™s another deserving/undeserving very successful player who attracts the criticism of the public.ย
Itโ€™s really the Aussie โ€˜tall poppy syndromeโ€˜ at its finest.ย
ย

There is no doubt however that Dangerfield can let his ego run away too often.ย

Heโ€™s basically a deckhead.

FMD what a joke the AFL is. Any person who has had any involvement at club land should be immediately conflicted out for at least 10 years following any official club roles.ย
ย

The AFL commissioners blatant [censored] for the Cats.

Now i understand why Danger as head of the PA stayed silent over the Allir concussion issue.ย

i figured he was offered a gig for his silence but didnโ€™t think it would be this blatantly obviousย

His football experience is not what should be sought or a place on the commission.

The commission needs ex players with both playing experience and administrative/management/director skills from their post playing years.

For Danger, and the footy world, it is too soon and, as others have said, he would be too conflicted and totally inexperienced to fill a board type position.

There must be plenty of former players who could fill a board position.

Who offers a spot on the commission to someone still playing?

Is this the new Dill Drew โ€˜out-of-the-boxโ€™ thinking?

Sorry Mr Dillonย

Just doing my bit.ย

Does anyone at HQ have any idea about running things or do they just put on their clown shoes each morning and make up some new way to turn the game into a circus?

How could you have an active player on the commission? I see thereโ€™s 2 spots, letโ€™s put Chris Scott in the other one and see how they go as a tag team act.. absolute farce.

ย

Too much influence by too few.
It used to be Eddy Everywhere. Now weโ€™re in Danger(ous) territory with Paddy playing on and off the Field. And donโ€™t get me started on Fox Footyโ€™s love affair with Jack Riewoldt.

Iโ€™d say this is fairly obviously a primer, as to take this at face value itโ€™s preposterous.

Gil & Goyder would have pontificated on appointing Dangerfield to the board upon retirement, lamenting that itโ€™d be widely seen as too soon. How do we make that more palatable? Propose doing it while heโ€™s still playing. Itโ€™s absurd and would never eventuate, but framing it in such a way makes a quick transfer once the bails have been removed far more acceptable to the masses.

Canโ€™t stand the suggestion though, the bloke is a pill.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย
