Just watched the replay & saw that last ball up where 2 Filth players went straight into Viney's back & no free given. WTF?

Also saw Christian Salem gut punch a Filth player during a marking contest so I hope he doesn't get sighted for that as the player was on his knees for awhile getting assistance from a trainer.

King should be pointing out that being 13% and 15% clear of two key rivals in the Lions and Port is almost a worth a game in hand. There is almost no chance either team will make up those percentage gaps, meaning even if we end up on the same points we will finish above both teams, likely ensuring we play on the G week one of finals not away at the Gabba or Adelaide oval. That's a big deal.

Love the passion and agree that David King flip flops all the time.

Just on this though, I'd be very cautious of saying there's almost no chance they catch us on percentage.

At Round 9 last year we had a 37.6% buffer between us (159%) and Geelong (121.4%). By season's end they had a 13.7% lead (144.2% to 130.5%). That's a 50%-odd turnaround.

Sydney nearly did the same, despite us having a 33.3% gap on them at Round 9.

This year our run home fixture doesn't appear as tough as our 2022 run home ended up being, but a 15% gap is half what we had last year.

He was sighted alright.  The MRP saw it.  Thankfully, just a fine for Salo.

Watched the replay for the second time.

Its been stated so many times I know but boy our backline is just superb. Across the board no weaknesses, they just find a way every week to impact the game as our most important line.

They're not perfect by any means but the way they structure up and support each other all on the same page is elite.

Rivers makes mistakes but his ability to stay in the moment and follow up whether its tackling or winning back the ball is terrific.

Lever and May had a lot of missed marks they wouldn't have been frustrated by but again the support of others to cover for them at ground level was great.

Salem playing his best game in so long was the highlight for me. But McVee playing alongside him as an aggressive ball user adds another element. We might need to nickname them eventually (The Slick Brothers?). Love that Judd has learnt so much under Salem and shows similar traits with his ability to win contests and proactive ball movement.

Hibberd got a fair amount of praise his first few years. But since I feel like he's been underrated. Rarely loses a contests, his physicality is so important. I hope they continues to manage him because in big games he just stands up every time.

Tomlinson was another that was surprising but the role he's playing is by far his greatest strength taking the second key tall. Played with a confidence we haven't seen since first half of 2021.

Will be interesting to see where Bowey comes back in. I think Petty much to others distaste will play forward. Especially with Tomlinson potentially settling back in. Frees Petty up to play deep or lead up forward.

The 'forward craft' started kicking in today for the first time at this level.

Took a number of lead up outlet marks playing a high HF role then went back and clunked the gutsy overhead with oncoming from a high ball 30 meters out.

Some great pressure including the tackle on Moore that wasn't a dangerous tackle.

Ran hard and defended well pushing up to stand the mark and held up their transition a little on a few occasions.

He could eventually become our version of a Mihocek type forward at some stage IF he can hold his form amd continue to take his chances.

That match will do his confidence the world of good and those of his team mates in terms of looking to hit him up more often.

Loved that summary. Really smart tackle that had to be carried out precisely. Better than Mihocek who does stage although like a lot of blokes now are being found out, like the Hawks reject.

Like how he went to mark as you say and tried to pressure.

Just watched the replay. What a great contest.

What a spectacle a demons vs pies granny could be.

A lot of people getting into David King for flip flopping but to be honest I and many others on this site probably had their doubts after our losses to Essendon and Port and our wobbly win against Carlton.

Monday was different. Like 2021, it looked like we were being selfless and playing for each other.

I loved the way we broke their running waves. So many of our players where the ball carrier would get past them would straight away block and scrag other pies players from joining that wave.

So much great body work and one percenters all day once we settled after the first ten minutes.

On the counter offensive, we just ran for each other and attacked as a cohesive hard as nails team.

I was worried we were going to waste our season this year but that win instilled a lot of belief we can do it this year. It must be great for the players and coaches confidence too.

Go Dees.

Just finished watching the replay. Savoured the live game memories.

Great 3rd quater, the last 15 minutes and 4th quarter.

Playing hard footy, causing turnovers, holding the lead, using tempo footy, our running when offence and defence, working well in small and closed areas.

Thought ANB in that period (late 3rd and 4th) was almost best on the ground, hassle, run and disposals. Don't know what some are talking about.

Smith's game, when it counted, gave us exit and scoring opportunities. Tomlinson and JJ also at "it".

How's Sparrow's endurance, wow?

How did we miss those set shots in the last, Smith, Pickett and Fritta. Got to fix that up, ice the game, and take the easy ones.

Thought we had the Woods playing the man and not the ball.

Vines in the last 30 seconds, has amazing will.

Umpires nearly got them home.

Trac needs Clayton back, I think the work load was getting to him.

Loved our desperation and game plan.

Interesting that a few of us left the replay watching till now.

I was specifically talking about the long Melbourne chant, Koz. I think it’s considered fitting for when the game is well and truly sewn up before the final siren. That’s when the likes of Collingwood do it. Another thing we do that divides the cheer squad is when we look certain to win, when there’s a minute left on the clock we sing Grand Old Flag. Some members love this, some not so much. We didn’t do it yesterday because doing the Melbourne chant then them getting so close shut us up real quick. 😂

Yeah I get that WCW. It was awesome! I was joining in from the members!! I don't know who invented the rule that you can only do that when the game is won. Collingwood should have been singing their stupid song all through the last quarter to lift their side. Anyway - great work done by the cheer squad as usual.

It wasn't a marking contest, Harrison received a handball and Salo swung an arm (not fist) into his stomach to tackle him.

It was just a hard tackle in the clinches and seemed to just wind him.

Ridiculous to be fined for that.

Sure. Anything is possible.

But there is only 2.8% separating us atm and the Pies' run home is as tough as ours was last year, so they will struggle to increase their percentage by much.

And our run home is as easy as the cats was last year. We finish the season with games against the roos, blues, hawks and swans (by way of comparison our last four games last season were Freo away, Pies, Blues and Lions away).

I thought so too.

I was really worried about how he we go on Cox and Cameron, but he was fantastic. He really got on his bike too

Fantastic to see how much more agile he is than last season.

He hasn't had much love on DL for that mark he took on the member's wing.

I thought he had no chance and it was so clever how, one he didn't give a free away and two that he was able to mark it. It was a critical point in the match, stopped a certain Pies forward entry and set one up for us.

As i noted before the game, if Petty plays forward on his return, there is a permanent spot for Tomo in defence there for the taking. An on that performance he'll take it.

And his kicking is underrated as well. Very calm neat short passes.

Especially since, just before this, Trac got pinged for pushing in the back, which resulted in a Woods goal, when he appeared to turn his opponent who didn't attempt to dispose of the ball, but exaggerated his forward movement and Tracc got a check on the way down. Poor consistency, but what to expect!

Yes it's good to have depth - the best teams always have some good players miss out.

Bowey was finding some of his best form prior to getting concussed.  He might have to come back through the VFL as I can't see anyone in the backline being dropped.
If Tomlinson and Smith can hold this form (and potentially grow it with some confidence) then Petty might be in the same boat!  But it's a long season - would be very surprised if Petty isn't in the side by the end of the year.

Very much underrated.

He is an excellent kick, and with turnovers being such key scoring source in footy atm a really important skill for defenders.

Hibbo and May can both be a bit hit or miss with their kicking. Tomo offsets that a bit.

He can also be relied in to take kick outs too because he has good depth on his kicks, and as you say can hit short targets (sounds silly, but it is amazing how many AFL players regularly fail to hit 15 - 20 metre kicks under little pressure).

I reckon May's real issue is his brain fades. Sometimes he can panic when he kicks it. He does 2-3 things a game where I am like "how are you the best FB in the game but equally the worse ball user in the backline?"

I understand why he takes the kick outs, but with Salem back I really want to see him kicking out more, especially in close games and quarters. I would also consider giving McVee or Bowey the kick out duties sometimes.

May can bomb it long, but that's about it. Pin pointing kicks is not his forte.

Bowey takes the odd kick in and usually gets it right.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
