Omg this is BS. Absolutely ridiculous. Oskar didn’t do anything wrong. Just shepherded the ball through.

And I’m so over the commentators group-frothing over Zak bloody Butters.

Yeah they’re definitely frothing… but how good are they!

Butters, Rozee, JHF, Wines, Boak… that’s a powerful powerful midfield. & they’re seriously coming.

I’d love to play Power over there in a qualifying final. If we hit September fit and in good touch I can’t see us losing.

100%. Never been this evident.

I don't think there's one player in the Bulldogs backline that I'd choose (type for type) over May, Lever, Petty, Salem, Rivers, Bowey and McVee.

Nah don't mind Port. Only because I don't know any port supporters but also because kudos to Ken Hinkley for turning things around after he dropped the first few and had the media on his back.

There youngsters use the ball so well

The umpires like players will be held accountable for poor performances such as the Baker call and the non holding the ball call against Alir.

Thats why finals are generally well umpired.

If the only accountability is not umpiring finals then this explains fully the garbage that we (all) endure week after week.  So they can be cr@p for 23 rounds and get selected anyway?

Love Butters. Best player in the comp this year. Very jealous of Ports young mids. Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis are all explosive and hit the scoreboard.

Hoping Sparrow can become a similar player as he’s got the physical attributes to do so, just needs it all the click at once. Showed promise the last few weeks.

I hope so also My Lord however not sure Sparrow has the explosive, off the mark pace in him like the young power players.

Only thing with Port is can they sustain it?

They are a young midfield playing big midfield minutes in the guts.

They will have a lull in the season, they wouldn't want to peak to early!

Umpire 22 is the worst in the business. There’s a reason he’s been around for years but never pops up in the finals. Dogs easily could have won that if it weren’t for him.
Port are a bunch of [censored] but they’d have to trip over their own shoelaces to miss top 2 from here. And that gives them a huge chance of a GF spot.
They have Geelong next week, I’m honestly not sure what to do for that game. Two despicable teams who are both dangers to us for different reasons. I might watch paint dry.

Port's flag to lose imo. They're (only just) the best side in the comp, with Collingwood in a close one at the G a probable better bet.

Dees vs Port or Dees vs Pies would be a wonderful end to the footy season. Let's hope it happens.

This might sound crazy / arrogant but if Port is so good with the number 1 midfield and the Bulldogs are making up the numbers why didn’t Port pump them?
If Weightman’s goal was allowed in the 4th qtr I think Port still win but by under 2 goals. Wins are win and hats off to them but there’s a Collingwood like feel about them, continue to win by 2 goals or less. How long can this last?

When we played them we were totally outplayed, no denying it. We play one good qtr and only lose by 4.

They have a tough run home including Ess away, geel home and away, coll home, freo away and another showdown. We will know a lot more about them in a few weeks.

Port are a decent outfit. Definitely in the mix.

Butters and Rozee quality mids. JHR will be a beast.

My solution to the umpiring problem:

- Get three of them off the ground and sitting behind a TV monitor.

- Each has a button to press, if they think free kick hit the button.

- Two or more buttons pressed, fourth umpire (on ground) gets signal into ear piece, blows whistle and pays free.

Obviously would need some tweaking but in general the advantages are:

- Decisions no longer influenced by crowd at all.

- Decisions no longer influenced by anything being said on the field.

- No more players complaining to umpire (the one on the field is simply the messenger).

- More consistent decisions with each contest being adjudicated by three people.

- Should not slow the game down as technology should allow the decision and communication to happen in an instant

- Generally get a better view of the contest from TV screen anyway.

The main things that would need working through:

- Watching off ball / off screen stuff.

- Anything sound related (e.g. touched kicks or contact made that was not clear to see but could be heard).

- Is one on field 'messenger' enough to keep up with where the ball is.

I loathe the Doggies when we play them as much as anyone, and they get umpiring armchairs often, but last night they were absolutely cruelled by substandard umpiring at crucial times in the last 1/4, and some of those officals should get please explains from someone.

Goaline shepherd was shocking and means TMac's magnivificanr effort was illegal in 2021 GF.  two clear 50m penelaities not paid. I suspect the umpire thought it was a marking contest and baker had eyes on the player and not the ball - but really?

Terrible.

Best team won but thats not the point.

When I go I'm just resigned to this season being so subjective at times decision-wise I just have to bear the errors and non-decisions and move on. Really poor for a so-called professional sport.

And with everything going right for them. First goal Grundy fails to just tap it through for a point, SPP kicks a goal over his head . Butters plays best game of his life. 7 metre pass to Lord ok another goal. About 5 goals from frees. 10-2 frees last quarter and our 2 in back pocket. 7-1 frees in forward 50 to them. Our disposal atrocious. They kicked them from boundary in wet, we missed from 20 out straight in front. They played  very well and we didn’t. Lost by under a goal.

Interesting idea.  But what if one of the the 2 umpires who press the 'pay free' button wants to pay the free to the opposite team to the other.

If we get in a close game in Adelaide the umpiring becomes stacked against us at the finish as happened in 2018 against Port and in 2021 against Crows.

See the nastiness in Port when a team mate is manhandled, or even just tackled aggressively.

Haven’t seen that with us for a few years.

Agree 100%.
I was annoyed when no-one backed Kozzie last weekend when the big Carlton goose stood over him in the goal square.
Reminded me of what Flash had to endure once Neitz retired and Daveys form dropped because of it IMO.
Apart from Viney who's a little bloke we are far too nice as a team.
Last year we allowed Langdon to get mugged by half the collingwood side after his duck/dinner comment.

Yep, Williamson is a very poor umpire. Makes Nichols look like a superstar.

Realistically Port are certain to finish top 4, so it's better that other teams vying for fourth sport lose.

I'd moved on from top-2 a while back.  Simply down to a top four focus regardless of what happens Monday (although it would be awesome to put an end to the constant media dribble/love for the Pies).

Overall I'd agree it was better from a Melbourne perspective for Port to win last night. OK, it makes it hard for Melbourne to finish Top 2 but it definitely makes it easier to finish Top 4, and it's virtually impossible to win from outside the Top 4. Port in Adelaide in a Qualifying or Prelim would be challenging but not impossible (refer 2021). Also, it might be the case where Port finishes top and Melbourne avoids them in a Qualifying. Interestingly, both Port (as you'd expect) & Melbournes' Sportsbet Premiership odds reduced (from 6.5 to 5.5 & 6 to 5.5 respectively) after last night's game. Anyway, a long way to go!

I guess each umpire has 2 buttons...one for each team. Need two presses for the same team to award a free.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024.
