Can’t share the enthusiasm here, ‘wins’ like this paper up cracks - we are a bloody ordinary footy team and more often than not have been for a few years - we should be better than what we are, but we need to see that we are not, it’s not about the opposition, it’s about us and how we play and make decisions on the ground.

Our coaching has been sub-standard for awhile against the best and we never want to deal with the hard truth. Anyone looking objectively at our performances knows we are nowhere near another premiership - who amongst the current coaches will challenge the club with this view and cause change? Who will speak up against the mantra that we ‘are learning’, we still ‘don’t know what our best forward set up is’ etc etc - it’s always glass half full stuff from our coaches, particularly Goody - we are always ‘trying to get better’ … but unsurprisingly, never do…

my main point is we haven’t learnt, or developed any further than where we were mid way through last year, if anything we are worse. This to me comes back to our coaching which I believe is sub-standard and complacent. Our ‘window’ is closing, I’ve been following he demons for 50 years and time goes quickly and I just feel we are missing a golden opportunity with some ‘lazy’ management

Can't remember a more boring, mistake ridden game in a long time. Crowd was flat as a tack for 50k. 

3 more Brownlow votes for Trac. Other than that great signs from Judd and JVR, Salem slowly returning to form.

Take the win and forget this game ever happened.

Yes, we deserved to win but all those set-shot woes and clanger kicks could have been costly but for a strong all-round defensive effort. Encouraging to see Salem getting back to his best, along with  improved clearance work. Crossed fingers that Oliver will be fit to face Collingwood. With Sparrow putting in a strong effort tonight, it will be interesting to see who drops out of the midfield mix. Joel Smith could be the unlucky one.

As usual @Axis of Bob is right. 

The scoreline was ugly given our inaccuracy but we dominated general play all night. The stats showed it. 
+50 disposals but also +11 tackles. +29 CPs, +9 clearances, +20 inside 50s (they only had 39) and +7 scoring shots. On expected scores we should have won by 7-odd goals I believe.

May kept Curnow silent. Tomlinson got beaten but allowed Lever to play well enough that Voss felt compelled to send Lewis Young forward to tag him. Gawn got his mojo back. McVee was superb. JVR was threatening all night. 

Yes they had mids out but we had Oliver, Petty and Hibberd out and lost Bowey mid-game. 

If you said during the week we’d lose, or if you said you couldn’t see anything good in our season, or that you thought we were cooked for the year, you should be celebrating this win (whether you do so openly or not).

Wins like this might paper over the cracks, but losses in these games take sledgehammers to the cracks and rip the place down.

Smashed them all over the ground. I don’t know what most people want from the team. Without looking, I assume it’s just groupthink from the Gameday thread.

Agree we absolutely killed them everywhere except conversion.

Yes McKay got the better of Tommo but that enabled May to murder Curnow and Lever to intercept.

Joel Smith enabled JVR and Max to get clear up forward.

All around it was a dominant performance.

27 shots from 59 i50s vs 16 from 39. That's a kill.

Horrible to watch, and nowhere near top 4 standard but we won.

Second half we began to play our game for the first time in weeks, but our backmen need an award and a pay rise. They were brilliant tonight. Tomlinson had some struggles, but wasn't as bad as many seem to think.

Some great signs from our young guns - JVR and McVee.

Our midfield can't kick. Even Salem's boot was off tonight. Turnover merchants. I wanted to punch something. The total pelican Roaming Brian would be a great option.

Spargo, Kozzie and Chandler - a meek game from all three. And what has happened to Fritsch's kicking?

Gawn & JVR in the last quarter - wonderful.

I would persist with Joel Smith. Didn't do much but worked hard and was much more mobile than BBB or TMac.

You’re off the mark. Carlton were desperate and in the second half had we kicked a little better we would have won by 6-7 goals. Sparrow, JVR, McVee, Bowey and Rivers all had games. Lever and May outstanding, Gawn got his mojo going and Trac did what Trac does. We could easily be 10-2 right now and I for one look at that game and think Oliver and Petty are still to come. Happy Days for me

Thought fritsch looked the best he has all year, moved well all over the ground and looked like he would make something happen whenever he had it. Could have had 4 goals and would normally kick those set shots. Hopefully he gets his eye in again for the back half of the year.

Was a tense 2-3 seconds of silence whilst Lewis was trying to figure out what Maxy was saying. 

Ugly game to watch but our midfield and defence were superb. Our forward line remains an issue, no matter what they say about us being the number 1 scoring team.

I watched him pretty closely and felt that most of McKays marks werent the fault of the defender.

Early in the season we hardly missed a set shot, particularly Fritter and Chandler.  Is it accumulated fatigue, confidence, pressure?  I hope that Mark Williams can fix this quickly.

FMD! Is it compulsory for us to hold up the ball until the forward line is super crowded? The long bombs are killing us. What hope have Roo, Fritter or Grawndy got when it's 6 players up...

Looked good the few times we went in fast without a crowd, switched the angles, lowered the eyes, not over used.

Deep down we all know it too.

i recall one kick into the corridor. Just one kick! And what happened? Mark, goal.

40 forward half turnovers for 1.4 is unacceptable We should have had 10-15 scoring shots alone.

And set shots kicking! Wtf has happened here. 

10-12 other teams would have beaten the Blues by 10 goals tonight. 

Harmes likely gone by MRO and I think Viney gets rubbed out too.

McKay is a very very good player. His goal kicking aside he’s a giant who marks the ball at the highest point. It’s so hard to defend in the air. Tomlinson was fine. He got lost on the lead once but the other contests were just McKay being far too strong in the air. 
Was hardly disgraced. 

Think a fair few on here owe Steven May an apology. There were posters writing him off after the Essendon game FFS. The All Australian blazers might be a thing of the past given his age but he’s still a colossus 1-on-1 with a great left peg.

You beauty. Never looked like losing. Should have won by 7 or 8 goals easily, but fatigue hitting our guys hard. Happy with any win tonight.

Bowser makes way for Hibbo, but would have loved Bowser to play KB as well.

It is what it is though.

Really need to get our ball movement going if we're going to beat Collingwood. Missed too many opportunities to slingshot and score tonight. Ground ball was way better though at both ends of the ground.

You see the glass as half empty but I prefer to regard it as half full. In the considerable gap left by the absence of Oliver, Petty and Hibberd it was also just one of those nights when everyone had the goalkicking yips or we would have won much more comfortably. The real test comes in the next two games, against The Pies and Cats, and I would be inclined to suspend judgment until then. I was actually quite encouraged, for example, by the coolness of young McVee, strong contested work by van Rooyen and Salem looking sharp again.

Yeah, coz they were so ruthless last week against the second worst team in the afl when they got smashed in the last quarter, giving up 6 goals.

And despite winning three more games prior to this match, they still had a lower percentage than us.
