I was pleasantly impressed by Andrew Dillons Resume, he is football through and through as was his father, mother and family, he pulled his boots on as five yo like a lot of other Australian kids. Has 23 years experience at AFL House, is inclusive mentioning all the people in his team and speaks with confidence and credo he is also well supported by his family and friends and as GTG pointed out he will hit the road running.!!!

I don't know if he'll be a good appointment or not, but I have met him at a conference about 10 years ago. He's affable, articulate, smart and humorous. Hopefully all of those traits will be on show. And for those that like trivia, I also found out at that event that he did his articles under the late John "Darcy" Duigan who subsequently became Victoria's Chief Magistrate.

Darcy was one of the best blokes you could meet. A real knockabout larrikin.

I recall two incidents early in my career, that some of you might find humorous.

On one occasion on entering the busy number 1 Court, where Darcy presided, knowing I was connected with the MFC, as Team Manager at the time, he said "silence in the Court, I will deal with the case of the busy representative of the MFC immediately, as he has important matters at the club to get back to".

On the second occasion I ran into Darcy in the street and knowing I had an interest in racehorses, he asked me for a tip. I told him I had a couple of runners and they were both good chances. He said he would back them. They both duly won. A few days later I again entered the busy Court 1, the main city Magistrates Court, whereupon Darcy saw me and again said "silence in the Court, my banker has arrived". He asked me to come forward and dealt with my case in about 2 minutes flat.

Sadly missed the great Darcy Dugan RIP.

I don't pretend to know what the AFL CEO does in his office or behind-the-scenes or whatever but so long as he sticks to his "I will always put the game first" mantra it can only hopefully be a good thing.

I guess not knowing what he does doesn't help me decide if he's going to be good or bad until he does something that's good or bad.

Can someone enlighten me on what his duties will be?

Can that be right re articles.

Years do not seem to match. I would have thought Darcy was sitting at the old magistrates Court well before Dillon finished law school.

That said, Goyder has kept Alan Joyce around for years at Qantas so he clearly doesn’t mind selling out employees for profits. Maybe they’ve checked Dills legal letters and found no huge red flags on the concussion front.

Well this took a strange turn.  Alan Joyce out, new CEO in. Any other boards that Goyder is chair of that we should expect a new CEO to pop up tomorrow with?

The words Richard Goyder used are pretty similar, i.e we conducted an extensive search, we believe we have the best candidate etc etc, which i am sure they believe....

That's like a newly elected PM saying that he's humbled by the electorates choice

He’s Chair of Woodside where he previously promoted a woman to CEO in 2021. Seems like he got 2 of the 3 women he wanted in to the top jobs

Somewhat surprisingly Joyce resigned today.  Will depart after a 6 month handover to new CEO.

Not really a surprise, has been in the works for a while. Just not announced like Gill. Probably because there’s more at stake with a listed company

I think you are correct. I may have misinterpreted what was discussed at that event where I met Andrew Dillon. On reflection, I think Andrew Dillon must have worked with Darcy Dugan in some other capacity. As well as Chief Magistrate Dugan was, for a time, the head of Victoria's gaming regulator when poker machines were first introduced into Victoria. Perhaps Dillon worked with him there.

All things considered Andrew Dillon has undertaken a long Apprenticeship at the top of the AFL so would have invaluable inside knowledge of how it all hangs together. This will allow Dillon to hit the ground running and not have to learn the ropes and get tripped up by all the seasoned experts in clubland, etc, etc. I would have had my money on Brendan Gale, he’s been brilliant at Richmond but he may have some short comings that we haven’t spotted??

How could anyone miss that he played for Richmond?

A year long search? It takes far less time to find a Prime Minister  or ambassador to a major overseas posting.  The AFL CEO is an overblown office clerk .....an employee. The same goes for all these sports muppets around the world.

Just watch the corporate media go into their spin about what great and mysterious man Dillon is. What an interesting and diverse family background. A great man who says little but achieves so much.

Dillon is now a member of an elite club and the media will love him for it. The media worship and celebrate rich and powerful people. How much will he pay himself? Tricky Gill made millions.

The current PM took 30 years to find.

Those throwing up their hands at the consulting fees spent, don't really understand the machinery of corporate Australia or even the world. Even if Andrew was best placed and the preferred candidate at the beginning of the process you cannot make an appointment of that significance without due diligence.

I also chuckle at the 'old boys club' references. The AFL commission have already sanctioned a vision and strategy, which has been very successful and will set the parameters of what the candidate must bring to the table. This is why most appointments for a CEO role are done through internal promotion, as they are already onboard for what must be done to achieve their long term vision. They are also a known quantity, with an understood management and leadership style. The external appointments are more common when a company is failing to achieve and need a fundamental change in strategy and direction.

Yes but can someone explain the machinery of the corporate world that landed Scott Morrison a job?

I assume a million pound sterling was squandered on a head hunting exercise when they could have asked any one of 11,000,000 Aussies about his skill set and saved the dough.

Simple won't happen, just a continuation of the old boys club.

Of course they have a "skill set". It's just not the one the public expects or wants. The skill set they have is the ability to get elected when many should really be unelectable. Some have the added skill of climbing over everyone else to get to the top.

Jetstar is Bogan 1, on account of a high percentage of those who fly are B-----. It also acts like one. Goes whenever and quite often decides half way through it cannot continue.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w
