NOTE:   Sparrow, ANB, Hunter and Jordon all worked hard but...

6 Viney - the ultimate warrior when the chips are down.

5 Oliver - slow start but really motored in the second half.

4 Van Rooyen - anonymous for three quarters but his three superb contested marks (and goals) were crucial at the end.

3 Gawn - not quite at his very best but in combination with Grundy eventually wore Richmond down at the stoppages.

2 Chandler - worked hard and kicked key goals when we were under the pump.

1 Langdon - covers the ground like no other.

6, Viney,

5, Gawn, brilliant game, we don't win without him.

4, ANB, critical game, pick pocketing Richmond in the fwd half was critical, defensive forwards are key, Voss needs to show vision of ANB to fix carlton.

3, Lever, such a clutch player

2, McVee, I swear he went at a 100% DE, clutch moments time and again saving goals

1, JVR, take a bow, probably stole the RS nom off McVee

Chandler took his chances he needed to take. Grundy looked a bit lost but the way he stuck up for McVee, (1st time Viney has been second in backing up a team mate ever), really gave me the warm fuzzies. Feel dirty about Langdon, should probably have McVee's spot but need to share the love. Oliver and Tracc I have both taken for granted.

Sorry to Chandler and thought Grundy was more influential than being given credit for.

Grundy needs to improve his defensive marking.

Really hard tonight because I don't think anyone played a complete game all day. A couple accumulated and did their thing all day without breaking free, others burnt very bright but for a short period of time only.

6 Petracca. The most complete game for me, 26 touches, 12 i50s, for 609m gained, 7 score involvements (including 3 GAs). I thought Petracca was involved all day, but also added some real power and burst at times.

5 Viney. I'm not going to quote stats. They were good but Vineys votes are based on effort tonight. He wasn't as influential with the ball as Tracc imo

4 Gawn: 6 contested marks (Richmond took 8 for the game) and led is for contested possessions with 13. Also snared a goal. He was the dominant big man on the ground when forward. And Grundy looked much better in the ruck.

3 Oliver: Another all day warrior who didn't truly dominate to his standards but was clearly in our best. Disposal was scrappy at times. However his clutch goal on the siren was the spark we needed: it gave us the momentum. Set shots aren't his game, but he worked hard to nail it, and I think that gets it extra credit. Had no love from the umpires when being held.

2 JVR: it was a 15 minutes cameo, but you could argue he won us the game. Strong contested marks in packs meant he learnt those goals himself. No one else stepped up like that when needed.

1 Lever: 10 marks (2 contested), 10 intercept possessions, and the only player to play 100% of game time. I don't know how to find stats for spoils. But I thought he was our best defender overall, reading the play and impacting contests.

Special mentions to Langdon, Chandler, Grundy, McVee and Brayshaw who I thought all played pretty good roles and could have nabbed a vote.

Also shout out to Bowey who (apart from one shocker used the ball well and defended very well, including that top notch effort and smother near the end of the game.

Congrats to Jack Viney for winning the Checker Hughes medal. I’m glad this game has the medal in his name for best afield.

For info, it was Checker Hughes that paid for and donated the Bluey Truscott perpetual trophy for our B&F shortly after Bluey died in 1943.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

It's Game Day and the Demons are back at the MCG and have a massive challenge ahead of them as they take on Premiership contender the Gold Coast Suns. What do you want to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
