Well Clarries second half of the year was his poorest on record (in my opinion) and against a sensational last 4 years of great years.

Easy to occur having missed 10 weeks of the season!
3 games left of the Home and Away season but still managed 27p’s and 25p’s in Rounds 22 and 24. With Finn Maginess latching onto him in Rd23.

There’s not many in the AFL who could manage that after a long layoff.

His first six kicks in his career were all free kicks in a match against us at the MCG from memory. Not one of them should have been paid - all dropping the shoulders. On that basis, it's against my principles to take him on :-)

So you wouldn't take Nick Daicos then either?

@Redleg covered it pretty comprehensively. Us lesser mortals need to take into consideration that the demands of pre-season conditioning are pretty daunting; especially so if your body is letting you down. Calling time on your career could be the sensible option, there would still be some form of financial compensation.

It all depends on what post playing package is offered.

Theyve both won a flag in Red and Blue... both top blokes...  doubt either will figure in our next premiership.

A wise man calls his own day.  Wish both well. Never met or spoken to BBB but all accounts well liked and respected.   Tom is also...  cut to a different cloth than many might suspect.

I hate beastmode but, he is the perfect player to fill the loss of Dunstan/JJ/Harmes

If I had a choice between Jack Billings and Mathieson I know which one I would pick.

Totally agree, but one will be pretty much free, the other won't

Not sure whether that is a credible criteria. Billings value would more than likely be only a third round pick. His history is far more impressive than Mathieson. His 2019/20 seasons were AFL elite. Injuries over the past 2 years has hampered his career. If he is fit again and wanting a new start he is exactly what we need. He can play both as an inside or an outside mid.

That is correct, perennial ducker / stager from the first match.

The AFL allows this which doesn't help.

One of Hotspur's players, Udogie, was red carded last night (yellow to red) against Luton for staging and they played a man down for the entire second half as a result.

After 30 odd years of discussion and examples, we can't even come to grips with sin binning or red carding a Maytard thug act.  He gets to play out the entire match AND come back the next week, plays in a Premiership, while his victim's team is a man short and a top 3 player down the following week.  Laughable.

His contract is at least 1mil over the next 2 years.  Matheson will be considerably less.

This is for a depth player, not someone we are expecting to make our team.

Billings is a better player agree though

You sure about that..

We are definitely losing a fair bit of depth with Dunstan JJ and probably Harmes all gone.

On the other hand we need to start giving the younger guys more game time like Laurie and Woewodin, otherwise they’ll go the way of JJ.

Howes is another with big wraps on him who may well replace Rivers at half back as we look to push Riv into the middle.

The reality is that quality mids are not going to come to us because they won’t get a regular game unless they are exceptional, or bring elite skills to the table.

Hello butters/mccluggage, both ooc next year.

Edit: conflicting reports but a quick google suggests butters doesn't come ooc until 2025 sadly

we have a better and deeper midfield than the Lions so if he wants game time he obviously won’t go to us

Did you watch this season?

One of our major issues is that our midfield is neither better nor deeper than Brisbane’s…nor Collingwood’s, Carlton’s, GWS’, or Port’s.

i would say our midfield is the equal of theirs in terms of its ability

mathieson isn't going to make our midfield any better just like he doesn't make the bears' side either; if 'beast mode' was playing in our best 23 i'd be more rather than less concerned about the quality of depth we have

Mathieson No - McAdam yes, he is your old fashioned fwd pocket half fwd flanker, loves to kick goals, tackles to hurt and can mark & kick accurately, he won’t cost more than Harmes or JJ but will fill a niche role at the Dee’s. 183cm (6’) and 80kg.!!

uh did you watch this season?  lol  quality argument

Neale (gun), Dunkley (up and down) McLuggage (very good but more winger) Berry is a liability and arguably lost them the GF.  they have a few other good decent players that run through the midfield

So yeah reckon Clarry Trac Viney Gus etc have them covered. plus Hunter Langdon Rivers Sparrow etc

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
