bedford got offered a three year deal at gw$ with more opportunity, as opposed to two at the mfc where he was behind pickett, anb, chandler for the speed forward role

he made the right call and good luck to him

Behind Nibbler and Spargo for the high half forward role (as opposed to the speed forward role played by Koz and Chin) - which is exactly the role he is playing at GWS.

We were dead keen to keep him, and if he stayed he would be playing now instead of Laurie.

i don't know about that @binman - bedford's skills don't seem as sharp to my eye as laurie

and last season it was chandler and bedford that seemed to be in competition for the same role

GtG - your maths is way too complicated for me but are you serious that we could have 4,5,9 in a Premiership year?

I must sau that would be a reasonably satisfying year.

The likelihood is astronomically small, but it would require a lot of things to go our...for example Grundy actually wanting to live in Sydney, which appears unlikely atm.

Yes, but only because they were fighting for a spot in the team. When nibbler missed his only game,  Bedford took his role.

Bedford is 100% playing the high half forward role that nibbler and spargo (and now laurie) play

In soccer vernacular, box to box gut running at speed all game.

I have heard several gws players, mutiple media people (eg Daniel hoyne and gerard healy) explicity say that bedford was specifically recruited to play the high half forward role and that that is the role he has played all season - to a very high standard I might add.

Yes, and he’s done it in fine style.

The point is, there’s a huge ‘Elephant in room’ , that is the big MFC blunder in not retaining Toby.

we put a deal in front of him but he wanted to leave.

I'm happy for him but Chandler has stepped up so we haven't been impacted by him leaving.

Georgiades resigned for port on a long term deal. Don't think we were ever interested.

This year if Goody had Bedford I think he would have handled him differently and shown perhaps some more patience. It was the same with Chin he would always be the first dropped.

And Toby did not play in a role as strictly as he is at GWS I don't feel. It just shows that a change of Clubs and another pre season plus natural maturity can make a difference to One's form and output.

Really we have Chin who has made it his time after 2/3 years and GWS have Toby so it is a win win situation and the jury is still out about the winner at this stage. May be years before we know any winner if at all.

Might’ve cooled once he did his ACL. Or maybe he’s not big enough?

Or maybe both

I just want to quickly get the premiership out of the way and move onto the draft period.

He signed for 4 years, it’s been confirmed

I have said it before on here that we won't be paying any of Grundy's contract but here is Cal Twomey on SEN yesterday:

“The other reality is is that he’s contracted as a Demon so a trade has to be made that satisfies them as well.

“Melbourne doesn’t have to pay a dollar if he goes, there’s no way this is going to be a three-club arrangement paying for Grundy if he does leave.

“Grundy has an agreement with Collingwood and an agreement with Melbourne at the amount. Melbourne and Collingwood don’t have an agreement.

“If he were to leave, the club that is taking him on would be taking on all that’s left from his Melbourne salary.”

Just so people are informed, we basically will have 2.6m free in our salary cap if we trade him.  🤑

Also makes the trade easier to do, a club is getting a top 5 ruck for $650k a year.  It's a bargain and you can see why we took a chance on it.

Where did you get the figure of 2.6 milion from?

Yep, I was just trying to see if he was talking this year only.

No over the 4.  Recon id be a even bigger story if he was on 2.6 for a year

IF it's not paid to Grundy the majority will be paid to his replacement so still the same costs

I guess the important thing is to get the right understudy to Max now and that will give us some coin to do the job.

Yeah okay, the point is whether it's Grundy or someone else there is no saving on salary cap.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
