    Still early days....

    But these are some of the possibilities for pick #13 (which will become pick #14) in the 2022 AFL National Draft.

    1) Matthew Jefferson - Tall forward

    2) Mattaes Phillipou - Tall midfielder

    3) Henry Hustwaite - Tall midfielder

    4) Max Gruzewski - Tall forward

    5) Lachie Cowan  - Medium defender

    I we are REALLY lucky someone like a Bailey Humphrey or a Elijah Tsatas might be a slider. But I highly doubt it.

    GWS just spent a week manoeuvring their way to pick 1 to I assume get Cadman, and North got themselves two bites at the next best. Even with Ports pick 8 early last week we'd be no chance. Oh well!

    I'm in the camp for Oliver Hollands at this pick. Outside mid with pace and good kicking. Could make the opposite wing to Lingers his own.

    Cal Twomey has him going at 12 in his latest phantom draft, so he should be around the mark.

    Really wanted a top 10 pick from the LJ trade but Freo couldn’t get it done. Dees might look to trade up a few places and try to get Humphrey.  
    Likely run sheet 1. Ashcroft BRIS F/s 2.Cadman GWS 3.Tsatas NM 4.Wardlaw NM 5.Sheezel  EssFC 6.Humphrey  Suns  7.Phillipou Hawks 8.Clark cats  9.Ginbey WC  10.Mackenzie stk 11.Hollands Carl 12.HewittWB 13.Busslinger WC  If we are stuck on pick “13” then 14. Dees …might bid on Jaspa Fletcher (Lions father son) it’s likely that JT will look at Matt Jefferson or Max Gruzewski to grab a key position young forward for list balance or take a punt on Brayden George.

    Just as long it isn’t a sub 180cm player. We have too many short players.

    We have an excess in stock of inside midfield so no. If we can’t get a 195cm+ tall forward then target an all round good player with good kicking skills and pace.

    The more I hear about Phillipou the more I like. At worst could be a tall dynamic mid.

    Here is my alternative strategy for pick 13:

    • we are not going to get into the elite end of the draft this year (top 5 or so) and the next batch is "throw a blanket over" material.
    • 2023 draft is looking very strong
    • we have lots of young talent at Casey that needs an opportunity (Turner, Bowey, JJ, Howes, JVR, Chandler all missed R23).  We need to give them an opportunity and show them a career path or we will lose them as we have Bedford.
    • we need to position ourselves so we can access some really elite talent, not just good talent.

    To this end I'd look at trading 13 for a future 1st which teams that are rebuilding might find attractive.  We might get something in return like a pick in the 30's. Draft in Grundy, promote Chandler and draft a couple in the 30's or 40's.

    That leaves us with 3 first rounders next year plus your future 1st for 2024.  We also have 2 seconds in 2024. We would then be in a fantastic position in a very good draft to trade up higher to get some really elite talent or trade in a very good player.

    I think we have enough good core talent both in the team and at Casey to take this approach.  I don't think we need to add good but not elite talent this year.  If we are to contend well into the future we need access to either the really pointy end of the draft or enough collateral to satisfy a really elite talent trade.

    Fans would scream but I think it's a great idea.  So, there you go, pull it apart.

    No pulling it apart from me - reckon it is a great plan.

    Just a minor question:  not sure where those picks for this year will come from unless we convert some future picks to this year which is easily doable.  Doubt Ess will give us a 2022 pick for Weideman if he goes as they need points for Davey jr.

    A premiership and 3 1st round picks. They might give us a trade ban and ban future first trading league wide if we added a 4th :laugh:

    It's a really good idea, well worth thinking about. Even if we use it this year, we can still conceivably trade Freo's 1st, Our 1st and a (2024) Future 1st next year for a very high pick, or a trade for a gun key forward out of contract.

    Looking at which clubs are doing the picking in the 7-12 range, I think there’s a very good chance Jefferson is there at 13/14. West Coast pick twice and there’s a feeling they’ll go local with Busslinger & Hewitt. Saints probably want McKenzie, Dogs & Blues won’t go tall and top 5 is too high for him. Cats May pounce at 7, but also sounds like they’re into Jhye Clark.

    Remember this pick will become pick 15 after the two likely bids. Doubt Phillipou or Humphry will slide to 15, so we're likely to get scraps or someone like Jefferson here. We desperately need a KPF, but Jefferson seems the only one around this mark in phantom drafts, and he's less than 80kgs and looks years away from having a body ready for AFL. On the vision I've seen, he looks more a like a pick 40 project player than a first round elite talent.
    Hollands could be a best case scenario to give us more outside run and skill.

    Disappointing result to not get a higher pick, as we're losing elite talent and likely not replacing it with elite talent. Hopefully there's still more dealing to come and we get inside the top 10 and give ourself a better shot at replacing elite talent with elite talent. As suggested earlier in this thread, we may be better off trading this pick out for future 1st rounders in hope that we can access elite talent next year instead of average talent this year.

    We are not losing elite talent,one great qtr in 52 games does not spell elite.Elite potential ,perhaps,if there is such a thing

    im of the view we should go smaller here and try and get our second pick into the 30 range to have a go at keeler, i rkn he has the best athletic build of the talls. cadman i feel has peaked early and benefitted from being the biggest bloke out there against other 18yo's which as we found out with weid doesnt necessarily transition to the big league. keeler has the leap and the athletic ability to get around the grounds. pair him with hollands i say and then bring elijah back to melbourne in a few years time ;)

    I just couldn’t handle it. Every time he makes a mistake hearing supporters yell ‘that’s trash binns’.

    Also, it’s not really on brand. Is there a ‘Slopes’, ‘Herringbone’ or ‘Roquefort’ available?

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
