If I were his manager I'd be exploring options. I'd prefer to keep him on the list and possibly give him a go while moving Petty forward. If Tommo goes we will need to address that spot and have backup other than Turner.

I just hope Lever gets his ankles and feet right next year or we will be down a defender

I don't know why he (and other players) dont strap them pregame instead of during if injured?  Or are they just re-strapping?

In fairness, how did Salem go this year coming back from a less serious knee injury?

Yes I thought Dees might look to grab one of the Kangas “compo” picks.

Hopefully Todd will help us out then

Seems almost the exact scenario imagined when North was given the 'must trade' supplemental picks.

Structurally important, mature, good player who is currently only missing out on AFL level games because he is stuck behind three of the best tall defenders taking the field anywhere.

I know he's not as good as Petty as a defender, but he could replace Petty as a permanent defender and Petty move forward. (Turner the other option)

I thought he was solid in the early rounds of 2022 when were missing Lever and Petty and played an excellent game against Port in NT in round 18.

Was very quick to be omitted after ordinary games against Sydney and Bulldogs where as others were immune from an axing.

But yeah, for the betterment of his career, he probably needs to find a club light on for key defenders.

I’d look at getting games into Turner. He is our future. Tommo is at the end so better to move him on I think - we have J Smith as depth.

Was played in AFL too soon snd never recovered his amazing 2021 form.
BOth Salo and Jakey had injury snd form as were pushed too far and ended up not fully fit.
Back  to 2021 form with good pre seasons.

I think it will be Essendon.

Bedford (3rd rounder) and Tomlinson (-3 rounder).

We’ll give you Toby for free if you take Tommo and his 500k.

We then tell Collingwood we’ve got an extra 500k to pay Grundy but we’re only giving you a 3rd round pick (or a swap of 2nd’s designed like a 3rd). They’ll probably be happy enough with that as it gets him off the books far more easily.

Best way to guarantee another ankle strain.  Strapping is good post injury to get back on the day, but if you want it to repair, stop strapping further.

If I were his manager I’d go with the opposite. Adam’s value is the lowest it’s been in some time. He’s one year off a serious injury, I would encourage him to back himself in to continue to improve his speed and mobility of pre-season and fight to get back into a seriously good backline for the last season of his contract. Even if he’s fringe at the end of next year he will have shown more upside than this year and other clubs will come with better offers. Atm he’s not getting big years or big coin on this years form.

Yep that makes sense.  Let's get Adam's $500,000 off the books for one year and pay Grundy and extra $300,000 for 5 years so we only have to give Collingwood a 3rd rounder.

That’s not what I said. Collingwood have been rumoured to pay 1.5 million of Grundy’s deal.

Tomlinson’s 500k could take that down to 1million. In no way would that excuse Collingwood from paying a good chunk.

How the deal gets structured year to year will depend on the clubs books. We’d just have cap space to front load. Brodie himself might be keen on that too, he might take a little haircut for another 500k upfront to invest. God knows he needs a hair cut

They'll have McKay, Logue and Corr, with a mid season draftee Dawson taken last year. He'd be further down the depth chart at North than he would be with us.

Thomo gets a game before Corr and most likely Logue. Theres a reason Louge wa splayed as a defensive fwd

All players would strap ankless for every game and training session

All very good points but a manager worth his salt would be saying there aren't many opportunities here, as it stands its looking like Turner will go past him next year. If he can force his way in that would be great but if he can get game time elsewhere he and his manager shouldn't ignore offers.

More likely he'll be a delisted FA next year. Better for both parties he moves now.

any sensible manager would be asking for a three year deal if he went somewhere else

even at base minimum salary of $375k a year that's still over double what he's only guaranteed for one more year at the dees

Corr is bad as a main man but a handy 3rd tall. Logue shut down Buddy this year, he was just stuck behind Pearce and Cox, an elite duo.

He recovered from his knee injuries.

Salem's ongoing issue is o.p. which he played with last year and this year.

Its a difficult one to fix.  Joel Smith missed a whole year.  Just look at what happened to Taylor Adams when he stretched too far a few weeks ago.

Yes I thought Dees might look to grab one of the Kangas “compo” picks. Unfortunately the only two with bargaining chips we can look at are Bedford or Tomlinson.  Their appetite to move is depending on

- how the relationship is with the coach (given they got quickly flicked to Casey, whilst others were consistently non performing)

and/or

-whether they and their manager think they get more games and game time elsewhere.

Tomlinson stepped up easily when we were without May or Petty. He played good games but was put back to Casey once May-Petty returned.  He allows Lever to play as a 3rd tall and intercept player. If Lever has to pickup the 2nd best defender, then he’s less effective.  Tomlinson offers high quality backup and owned games back at Casey.  If he’s not in Goodys favourites list, it’s very disappointing but he might as well look elsewhere.

Not in Goody's favourite list 'norm'...I would think anyone here would have May, Lever and Petty ahead of him.

So it's not about favourites it's about where he actually sits on the list.

I reckon Goody has it right.

On Tomlinson.  He joined us at a reported $500k p.a.

That is an expensive player to have running round at Casey.  I would say the club will take a 3rd or 4th round pick to move the $ out.  Its would be a mini 'salary dump'.  He came to us as an FA so owes us nothing in terms of draft picks.

As I've mentioned in several other threads, Taylor doesn't use draft picks other than first and second round so if we get a 3rd or 4th round pick, I'm confident we will convert it to something better.

They don't anymore, watch games when guys roll ankles, they have no strapping when getting seen to initially, then get strapped.  Maybe there is some modern physiotherapy reason for it, but they just don't seem to anymore.  Maybe someone can ask next time at training.

I agree with McClure for once. Reckon there will be a club who'll take him for depth as a defender.

3rd or 4th round pick perhaps..

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/09/19/mcclure-would-be-surprised-if-contracted-demon-remains-at-melbourne-in-2023/

mclure's probably just been reading all you nuffies on DL suggest we trade every player over the age of 22 who's not in our best 22 as it currently stands, yknow its ok to have depth on our list and we can't pick everyone every week right

Good get by the dogs to get Jones in, but they are still need a big defender i reckon. Tomlinson would be good fit.

The blues might also look at him

they've already got Cordy, Keath and Gardiner and can swing Darcy or Naughton or Bruce back if they can get in Lobb to play with JUH

He's contracted isn't he? So we don't have to trade him if we don't want to.

Potentially we will be happy to get his contract off the books, but it might leave us thin on KPP.

we'll offer him an extra year or two to lock him in till he's say 31-32 and smooth his wage out to bring it down annually, i promise ya the club will see him as a required player

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
