In all seriousness how can the umpires be so good at reading the game that they give these guys votes?

The red carpet was probably more interesting to me. The girls OMG there was some stunning women on the arms of footy players. 
 

Oliver I thought polled okay and was a better player than Cripps - bias aside, Clarry is a relentless machine and was in amongst it.

Yeah but Oliver was voted by the Coaches as the best player.
Means more than the votes from Umps.  
Umps aren’t anywhere near qualified to give the best player the ‘award’.

Suspended for 2 weeks, then let off. I said at the time there was some degree of AFL favouritism for the poster boy at play ... and also said, as a big Brownlow favourite, the AFL would have been keen to avoid another Chris Grant fizzer. Someone on here argued against conspiracy theories - I do too.  It's not conspiracy - but it's human nature to want to reward your favourites, ( umpies do it, school teachers do it, we all do it :-) ) 

AFL insiders want to protect the photogenic, clean cut, golden boys who keep the brand shiny and the mega dollars rolling in. Most importantly, the AFL were super hopeful Carlton would play finals and bring in bigger crowd$ ... so I still suspect there was a degree of bias at the tribunal.

Clarrie is so good/effective that he is 'expected' to dominate games with performance excellence. This expectation does not draw the Brownlow votes to which he is entitled - and the same for Petracca.

I am extremely proud of the two of them polling so highly in this atmosphere, both smashing high scores across the season - this silent outcome (ie: not winning the Brownlow count) draws critical votes against them both, appearing to rob  Peter to pay Paul. It also has the effect of conceding by umpires that should a more conservative game appear for either of them where they still would warrant 2 or 1 vote(s) for performance quality, yet receive no votes in such games because they have not met with 'expected' game performance (ie: absolute and solely the best afield). This makes us all wonder whether the Brownlow method is bullet-proof, legitimate and fair; as we all realise, umpires are the first to make error and favour two elements all modern footballing outcomes. Hush, hush; we scored incredibly well despite the eventual disagreements on the singular outcome. Their combined scoring is a poor man's reckoning of immense proportions unrivalled by any other club in the League.

At the end of the day the only medal that counts is the premiership medallion that Geelong or the Swans players will have around their neck. Clarry will be back doing his thing next year and hopefully its enough to help get us to the big dance. Thats all i care about. As for the Brownlow. Its for the WAGs and gambling companies

I didn’t watch a second of it but saw that Lachie Neale got one vote in the round 23 game where we smashed the Lions.

Both Fritsch and Pickett kicked four goals and neither got a vote.

That sums up how poor the voting is.

This award is meant to be for the best and fairest. It lost all credibility when DiPierdomenico won it in 1986 and so it continues this year - Cripps should have been suspended and been ineligible in my opinion. I wonder if Ah Chee thinks he is the fairest?

'Their man' didn't hit the lead until the last round.  If he was suspended he wouldn't have got the votes to win, so it wasn't a Corey McKernan/Chris Grant situation.

 

I'm just glad Neale didn't win again.  The bloke doesn't even get tagged because of his ineffectiveness, yet he polls his [censored] off.  It is laughable.

Cripps has more Brownlow medals than he has played finals matches - read into that what you will.

Nevertheless he shouldn't have been eligible to win and he shouldn't have been playing in round 23 to get the winning 3 votes.

Still a better result than Neale winning would have been.

Because the media sites are all so useless it's impossible to get the full leaderboard ... I could only get the top 11 from The Age. Cameron the only non-mid in it.

The umps now have an out. Because it's become a "mid fielder's award" there is no incentive for them to assess non-mids, and now they can take the easy way out and only give to mids, because that's now the expectation.

It's something of a miracle that Cameron got as many points as he did, which says someone about the season he's had.

All adding to the degradation of the Brownlow as an award deserving of respect.

The overturning of his suspension was of course a travesty. But not due to bias. It's a consequence of the AFL turning over their sporting tribunal to court room barristers and giving them free rein to w*nk on and on for literally hours. Procedural fairness my backside. By the time the barristers had finished polluting the simple proceedings of a sporting tribunal, the tribunal members were so befuddled, they didn't know their own names, let alone what day of the week it was. It's been apparent to fans for years, but it seems it took this debacle for the AFL to wake up to it.
