CHANGES: Rd 21 vs Collingwood

Weideman is the one, his second efforts concern me but I do wonder if his role on Friday night was to be the decoy and lead away from Fritsch. Sometimes it's what you're not doing that makes you a team player. Still a fit BBB comes straight back in.

5 Goals and starred... almost BOG

Against the bottom side beaten by 91 points, if the club thinks he is ready he will play but I don't think we need another Watts style intro to football arena, but who knows...

Don’t want to be too negative, Jaded. ANB has things to do to release Petracca. I would put Melksham on Daicos and as for Moore, can we just not kick it down his throat?

I 'd prefer to deliberately sit it on Moore's head and let Kozzy, Melksham and anyone else that wants a turn crash into his back and take a few screamers.

Unless there are injuries I think no change. If Brown is fit perhaps he comes in. At the moment this is as good as it gets. After watching the seconds yesterday Smith needs another week at Casey but of course there is no game next week for Casey ( what crap). I have not forgotten JVR I just think management want him to put in a season at Casey. Yesterday he played the bottom team so his 5 goals should be viewed with a little caution.

I don't think it is the time to play JVR, but there is a big difference between now and when Watts was thrown to the lions (sorry wrong team).  Outside of keen Casey watchers, no one in the broader AFL community knows JVR from a bar of the proverbial soap.  So the #1 saviour pressure is not there.  C'wood wouldn't feel especially keen to rattle him more than they would for any debutant.  But this being a big match with a huge crowd it does not seem a good moment for anyone to debut in a key position.

In descending order, what's the worst potential outcome(s) for JVR and or the club if they choose to debut him from your perspective @sue?

Quite simply I think it’s time to blood JVR who has gathered some real consistency in the twos and might even provide more headaches than BBB given his ground level ability.
ANB might need a spell as well so is it time to give Chin a full game?

in: JVR, Chandler/Laurie

Out: Weideman, ANB

Harmes is no auto selection back into a side that just had it's best four quarter effort for the year.

Posters overate Harmes also.

Our mix looked great and I agree with others in that he should be competing with Sparrow for that mid rotation, or Jordan on that wing role if it comes to it.

Hunt in form playing on a flank is a big boost and point of diff for us. Likewise with Gus playing more mid allowing Petracca to float more forward. And Melksham is nailing his role atm and I think could be a great tag on Daicos. Rough him up and get dangerous going forward. We need to start intimidating some of these players that we've allowed to get off the chain in previous games.

Ben Brown for Weed the only change.

OK EO. Only one.  JVR plays even worse than Weid and loses confidence.  Furthermore since he then wouldn't play again this year, it means we've fiddled with what little forward synergy there is by not playing the established players, however iffy they are.  '

So it would be a big gamble to play him.  If it came off it would be wonderful, but only the club internally would know the real risk.  If he plays I hope he kicks 4 goals.

Makes sense Sue - I agree with the synergy comment.

Can't see JVR coming in either.

He played in a side that won by nearly 100 points and some of his goals were tap ins.

His performance has been a bit blown outta proportion.

Must say I was thinking similar. Also the forward marks he took were mainly uncontested although he does seem to have a natural ability to position himself well.

His time will come next year

Weideman is a star in the VFL which makes JVR's form at that level irrelevant.

Likewise Raggedy Anne Browne for that matter

Too simplistic

I'm sorry Sparrow and DL. You are right, harmes is not an auto include.

Having a VFL squad with harmes and Dunstan at centre bounce is a testament to our depth

Out Weid

In brown

Nibbler is badly out of form - has slowed down and getting caught too often. I think he needs a break. Weed must go surely - again zero physicality.

That bit is garbage. Did twoo amazing run down tackles against the Dogs for starters

Got caught in two minds running fwd and got run down v Freo. Having said that he is not playing well

Sad to say Sam looked lost at times - sure one very good contested mark and goal.  IMO if BBB not ready JVR could not do less - he looks a fierce competitor.

Those who say Sparrow should go - thought he was very fierce a the ball and at the opponent.  IF Harmes is really ready maybe ANB is more vulnerable.  Seems to get caught more often recently.

Both Sparrow and ANB are hard and fast at the opponent; sure, sometimes both of them have difficulty picking up the ball but they are both 'tappers' in our team game - usually enabling (because of the tap) a Demon teammate to collect and deliver the ball. Both have goal-side advantages, kicking well for a score or two to advantage. ANB is a proven chaser - all game - whilst Sparrow has the makings (on visual evidence) of being a 'destroyer' against any opponent, given the circumstances at any point of the game.

Spargo is the weakest link - and Chandler has the muscle to replace him against the Filth - did I mention that Chandler is setting his own high standards on merit at Casey?

Sam needs to be substituted for JVR - should BBB not be up for the game. Even JSmith could do with a forward line run - playing well for Casey the longer that game went on against the 'Ants' - he doesn't shirk the issue, either.

Kozzie needs to be played in the deep forward arc, permanently. He's worth two goals per match, at least, in there.

Solution : Put Tomlinson in at FF .He would provide a contest and runs straight at the ball !!!  We have got the Mid/Small Fwds.

The correct thing to say is we are most likely not dropping ANB for an inconsistent season.

That’s what it has been. His leadership and his role helping Petracca make him very difficult to replace but he has been down on his 2021 output.

I think his output has been similar it's just he was hitting the scoreboard more last year. He's had opportunities this year and missed whereas last year he was slotting them from everywhere.

I would say he's playing well without ball in hand Jnr.  Not so well with it at present.

I thought Joel Smith played really well in the second half for Casey. He took a couple of lovely marks and got better as the game wore on. The danger with him is he flies indiscriminately. But thats better in the forward line and he remains a chance if BBB or Fritsch gets injured.

The main quandry this week is Harmes. I suppose he is in the mix with Jordan, ANB and Sparrow. I like Sparrow a lot but admit he does make mistakes. As do all four of these players.

I think the other way to get all four of these players in is to move Brayshaw back and drop one of Hunt or Rivers but I hope they aren't thinking like this. I liked Hunts game and am happy no-one is wanting him out. And the back seven with Salem, Rivers, Hunt, Hibbo, May, Lever and Petty (with Bowey as the reserve) were great against Freo and can hopefully keep it up and keep Gus in the mid/forward rotations.

Not that it means a huge deal but also backed up statistically.  Well up on 2021...

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
