Was it his uncle at Norf?

That was his father, Paul.  His grandfather and great grandfather also played VFL, making our Charlie the fourth generation of that family to do so.  I would think that this is unique.

He is a very smart player, does all the running and defensive actions expected and maximises his possessions.

A terrific Demon!!

Key part of our attack and forward / defensive set-up.  Well done Charlie.

I had forgotten that Charlie struggled for selection in 2019 and 2020 (only 8 games each season) while he played 18 games in 2018 and every match in 2021.

It hasn't come easy but he's a potential 200 gamer

Well done Charlie

Not surprisingly, Spargs was his usual jubilant self after inking the deal. Can’t wipe the smile off his face 😂

Have called Spargo “Smilie” since his arrival, he’s a ripper.

One of my favourites. Just goes about his business with little fuss but plenty of polished. Great re-signing

Sure we have quite a few champion players but more importantly we have a champion team.  I am so wrapped when people like Spargo choose to hang around for the journey forward. A very important cog in our engine

Love Charlie.  Such a cool cat!   Rapt that he has re-signed.  Signed up to his FA year.  By then he could have a few more premiership medals!!

As an aside, by the middle of this decade we will have a few players with (hopefully multiple) premiership medals reach FA status in their mid twenties and will be in high demand.  I guess that is there time to aim for bigger $ contracts.  In the meantime I love that they are signing up and taking a lead from Goodwin, Gawn etc and settling for more moderate $.

Charlie Spargo has signed a 3 year contract extension. Hopefully Gus and Dogga follow suit.

Excellent and underrated re-signing.

Who would've thought we'd be saying this in 2019/early 2020.

Spargo climbing the stat sheet.....

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/1129810

From this article:

he’s ranked second in the league for marked kicks inside 50, which means he plays a crucial role in the team’s link to score. ‘

He makes his possessions count. Not as flashy as some small forwards, but that stat alone makes him the most impactful.

What other kind of marks are there? Or does it mean kicks kicked within the forward 50?

Great news - very much under appreciated and unrecognised in the footy world at large, and by some within this group ... but not amongst those who matter in our club.

Pressure, tackler, and amazing vision and disposal.

Congratulations Charlie.

Great post on Spargo.

His teammates have said he's the club's best kick inside 50m, but its his eleite decision-making I like before he executes and in split second time. Never makes a wrong call.  The delivers the pass accordingly.

It means for example his kick into Fritta  in the final 1/4 of the GF. Got the ball from Trac outside 50 then nicely honoured Bailey's well-timed lead at about 30 meters from goal.  Game then over.

Technically you were right on the interstate call Flemo, with Spargs being from Aulbry and being a TAC Murray Bushranger, but his Wiki page also metions something about him being an with NSW/ACT in the U16 & 18 championships and a GWS Academy player, so we are lucky he slipped through that net.

Your call somewhat surprised me at first as I only remembered the connection with his dad to North and that he was a Melbourne Grammar boy.

Correct.

Spargs was with our Murray Bushrangers system from schoolboys to his draft year. He was an elite junior prospect and made the All Australian under 16's playing for NSW as an on baller. That's right, he was an absolute gun playing as an inside midfielder with spurts as a half forward. Well worth keeping a close eye on this over the next few years whether he may get some midfield opportunities like we're seeing with Alex Neale Bullen.

We were lucky the AFL changed rules around the GWS zoning because had they not, Spargo would be currently a GWS player.

His old man Paul Spargo is one of the most revered country footy legend in the Ovens and Murray league. A 5 time premiership coach for powerhouse club Albury Tigers and was inducted as coach for the Ovens and Murray team of the century. I played senior footy for Yarrawonga when I was a bit younger and coming up against a Spargo coached Albury was definitely one of the most physical games of footy you'd play. They were dirty as hell, but it made them into the powerhouse they are today.

Paul Spargo could also give an almighty spray which could be heard from the other side of the ground!

All in all they are fantastic family the Spargo's. Kate and Paul should be congratulated in raising 3 outstanding kids. Despite his high profile locally, Paul always kept his distance when it came to Charlie's footy coming through the junior ranks and was never one to get involved vocally like some parents I've come across.

Well deserved reward for one of the hardest workers. The guys said it on the pod, when he get's the ball you know he'd going to use it!

Charles kicks a lot of his goals at crucial moments.
I consider him a weapon.
He sticks tackles too, maybe he learnt that from his old man

A very important player

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
