There is no way McDonald will be dropped. If Weed and McDonald keep on playing the way they are Brown will just have to bide his time in the VFL.

With all due respect. I couldn't disagree any more. Weideman doesn't take the spot of Ben Brown, one of our most important players, just because he played 1 good game 3 weeks ago. Using the same logic, Tomlinson would've stayed in the team and kept Petty out despite Petty being the much better player.

In: Ben Brown
Out: Weideman

That's bulldust Petty came in because Tomlinson didn't perform. Weideman performed big difference.

How's that ? Unsighted in the first half, and I could have got a kick in the second.

Some of us have a different interpretation of the word " performed " than you.

No way did weid cement his spot last night.

I reckon Weideman played OK.  brought the ball to ground a lot, competed hard and was involved in several scoring chains. He did this better than T Mac imo. Weed also had 2 contested mark to T Mac's zero.

I reckon Brown and Weed could form an excellent partnership if given the time and support

I think no change…..but that’s what I thought last week too! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Tomlinson performed fine, but he is not Petty. Petty is a superior PREMIERSHIP player. Much like Brown is over Weideman. Brown is the MFC FF in 2022 and he comes back in to replace an inferior player.

IN: BBB

OUT: TMac

I reckon they will trial BBB with Weid because they haven't played too many games together and if we remember, they dominated the VFL together last year (Yes I know its not comparable to the AFL, but was thinking more of the chemistry between them).

The other thing is that weid arguably has more runs on the board atm, we've got to remember that he kicked 4 only 3 weeks ago. BBB coming in will lead to weid having less attention on him and also mean that TMac won't be jumping for the same balls as him

Look, we know, you don't want to see Brown in the side.

This is not a good argument in your favour, though. Tomlinson did completely fine, but Petty's better and got the spot back accordingly.

I'll save the trouble of starting a "what they're saying" thread this week.  25 pages and counting of hectic umpire bashing.

Disagree. It not that I want Brown out of the side its just that I think Weid and Tommy have played their part and don't deserve to be dropped. I think Brown should bid his time in the VFL.

Weed competed well tonight but he is in no way as dangerous as Ben Brown.

This is the unfortunate fact, I think every Melbourne fan wants to see Weed break out kick 6 goals and announce himself as the real deal at AFL level. Just completing isnt enough to take Bbb spot, maybe TMacs?

Play all 3. TMac can play as a utility- forward, back or in a pinch wing.

How many times do I have to say it, he kicked 4 on Jayden Laverde!

The bloke had 7 kicked on him today by...Taberner. Seriously, take Weid's 4 goal performance against Essendon with a grain of salt. I thought he was Ok last night but let's not pretend he's regularly kicking bags on the best defenders.

If you all can remember Tmac trained all pre season for a gig on the wing, this was the plan before Weed got injured during pre season last year.

Tmac was supposedly finished but put together a remarkable 1st half of the year playing as a CHF/FF.

I still feel Tmac has more assets in his game than Weed eg. 2nd efforts, tackling, game awareness etc.

Match ups with Richmond's team is important as well.

I noticed that the Tigers are playing only two tall forwards atm, Balta and Lynch. The rest are small or small/med. I hope Lever gets up, but we might rest Levers ankle and go with May and Petty as our KPDs.

That could give us the opportunity to bring in BBB and start TMac on the bench.

HF: Jackson - Weid - Spargo

FF: Pickett - Ben Brown - Fritter

Inter: Tmac - ANB - Sparrow - Harmes

In: Ben Brown, Out: Lever

Would certainly stretch the Tiger's defence

Edit. Just saw they are playing Jack Rievoldt off the bench these days, so maybe not

We don't rest blokes unless they're missing a limb

If Brown comes in for TMAC, does that allow Weed to play the high half forward role? If so, I thought he was much more suited to that last night than the deep forward role. As the game wore on, he was able to lead up and do some great work marking on the wings. I think his is his go. In saying that, Brown and Weed can work out a balance where one stays deep and one leads high, but they can’t be going at the same ball. It’s a great problem to have.

But in the same game TMac had 6 touches and 1 goal. We are not talking about Weid's performance by itself, it has always been in comparison with TMac because one of them needs to make way for BBB

And in relation to Taberner kicking 7 against Essendon, Weid had the same amount of set shots as Taberner and Taberner is no slouch (Averaged 2.5 Goals last season)

Tmac played on Ridley who is just about Essendons best player and an AA calibre defender. In any case, Tmac has been very poor I agree - my point is more generally as to whether Weid 'has it' or not, rather than who should go out next week for BBB. It's much of a muchness on current output.

Taberner is ok, but doesn't scare any opposition fan or defender. He's also Freo's sole tall forward (their other a resting ruck) and would receive a very high % of their entries directed towards him. He's not a great yardstick but is probably a good representation of what Weid could be with some consistency...

Tomlinson performed but Petty is better.   Same could be said for Weid / TMc v Brown.

And who would you leave out?

Disagree, he looked more dejected than normal and has been playing that way for a while now.

And Thursday night will reveal all.

He had received an elbow in the eye socket hence the shiner, I reckon that contributed to his mood

In the post-match presser Goody talked about how they've spent a fair bit of time working out the best forward structure and they believe they have that now. Can't see us playing the 3 permanent talls anymore.

Would be similar with the backline I imagine given Tomo came out for Petty.

Wing won't happen IMO, we've got that covered now.

Ha, ha.

Just saw your post but a tad late as I waded through the now 26 pages on bf to find a dozen posts relevant to our game.  Such a grind.  If people thiink we whinge a lot they could try the tigers bf post game pages, altho I don't really recommend it.

So, the 'What Did They Say' thread is open.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
